Book Synopsis Motor Speech Disorders by : Nick Miller
Download or read book Motor Speech Disorders written by Nick Miller and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motor speech disorders are a common accompaniment of a whole range of neurological conditions, from stroke, brain injury and Parkinson’s disease through to many rarer conditions. This book aims to aid understanding of the nature of motor speech disorders from a cross-language perspective, in contrast to the largely English-centric nature of research and practice recommendations to date. The book looks not just at how these motor speech disorders are assessed and treated in other countries, but also examines how underlying speech impairments differ according to the language someone speaks. The book studies the underlying neurological, neurophysiological and neurophonetic characteristics of motor speech disorders in different language contexts, and discusses the implications these have for clinical rehabilitation. This significantly adds to debates around the theoretical understanding and clinical management of motor speech disorders.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Human Work, 3rd Edition by : John R. Wilson
Download or read book Evaluation of Human Work, 3rd Edition written by John R. Wilson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-04-04 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised and updated, Evaluation of Human Work is a compendium of ergonomics methods and techniques that is both broad and deep. The editors have once again brought together a team of world-renowned experts and created a forum for them to introduce their most valued techniques and methods. Almost every chapter has been revised and several new chapters have been added. See what’s new in the Third Edition: Sociotechnical design of work systems Team design and evaluation Learning from failures through a joint cognitive systems perspective The Analysis of organizational processes Techniques in user-centered design Increased understanding of the nature of knowledge and knowledge management in contemporary systems Environment surveys Systems for near miss reporting and analysis The one thing that has remained unchanged from the first and second editions is that this text is produced NOT as a cookbook of ergonomics methods. The editor places ergonomics methodology in context, and each chapter carefully describes the background to method development in that area and the application of methods and tools. Exploring the topic of ergonomics/human factors from a ‘doing it’ perspective, the book serves as a guide to what ergonomics can offer industry, business, or human service professionals and a reference for practicing ergonomists.

Book Synopsis Progress in Speech Synthesis by : Jan P.H. van Santen
Download or read book Progress in Speech Synthesis written by Jan P.H. van Santen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a machine to convert text into sounds that humans can understand as speech requires an enormous range of components, from abstract analysis of discourse structure to synthesis and modulation of the acoustic output. Work in the field is thus inherently interdisciplinary, involving linguistics, computer science, acoustics, and psychology. This collection of articles by leading researchers in each of the fields involved in text-to-speech synthesis provides a picture of recent work in laboratories throughout the world and of the problems and challenges that remain. By providing samples of synthesized speech as well as video demonstrations for several of the synthesizers discussed, the book will also allow the reader to judge what all the work adds up to -- that is, how good is the synthetic speech we can now produce? Topics covered include: Signal processing and source modeling Linguistic analysis Articulatory synthesis and visual speech Concatenative synthesis and automated segmentation Prosodic analysis of natural speech Synthesis of prosody Evaluation and perception Systems and applications.

Download or read book Text, Speech and Dialogue written by Petr Sojka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Text, Speech and Dialogue, held in Brno, Czech Republic, in September 2004, under the auspices of the Masaryk University. This series of international conferences on text, speech and dialogue has come to c- stitute a major forum for presentation and discussion, not only of the latest developments in academic research in these ?elds, but also of practical and industrial applications. Uniquely, these conferences bring together researchers from a very wide area, both intellectually and geographically, including scientists working in speech technology, dialogue systems, text processing, lexicography, and other related ?elds. In recent years the conference has dev- oped into aprimary meetingplacefor speech and languagetechnologistsfrom manydifferent parts of the world and in particular it has enabled important and fruitful exchanges of ideas between Western and Eastern Europe. TSD 2004 offered a rich program of invited talks, tutorials, technical papers and poster sessions, aswellasworkshops andsystemdemonstrations. Atotalof78paperswereaccepted out of 127 submitted, contributed altogether by 190 authors from 26 countries. Our thanks as usual go to the Program Committee members and to the external reviewers for their conscientious and diligent assessment of submissions, and to the authors themselves for their high-quality contributions. We would also like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all the members of the Organizing Committee for their tireless efforts in organizing the conference and ensuring its smooth running.
Book Synopsis Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss by : Walt Jesteadt
Download or read book Modeling Sensorineural Hearing Loss written by Walt Jesteadt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent study indicates that 20 million people in the United States have significant sensorineural hearing loss. Approximately 95% of those people have partial losses, with varying degrees of residual hearing. These percentages are similar in other developed countries. What changes in the function of the cochlea or inner ear cause such losses? What does the world sound like to the 19 million people with residual hearing? How should we transform sounds to correct for the hearing loss and maximize restoration of normal hearing? Answers to such questions require detailed models of the way that sounds are processed by the nervous system, both for listeners with normal hearing and for those with sensorineural hearing loss. This book contains chapters describing the work of 25 different research groups. A great deal of research in recent years has been aimed at obtaining a better physiological description of the altered processes that cause sensorineural hearing loss and a better understanding of transformations that occur in the perception of those sounds that are sufficiently intense that they can still be heard. Efforts to understand these changes in function have lead to a better understanding of normal function as well. This research has been based on rigorous mathematical models, computer simulations of mechanical and physiological processes, and signal processing simulations of the altered perceptual experience of listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. This book provides examples of all these approaches to modeling sensorineural hearing loss and a summary of the latest research in the field.

Book Synopsis Human and Automatic Speaker Recognition over Telecommunication Channels by : Laura Fernández Gallardo
Download or read book Human and Automatic Speaker Recognition over Telecommunication Channels written by Laura Fernández Gallardo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses the evaluation of the human and the automatic speaker recognition performances under different channel distortions caused by bandwidth limitation, codecs, and electro-acoustic user interfaces, among other impairments. Its main contribution is the demonstration of the benefits of communication channels of extended bandwidth, together with an insight into how speaker-specific characteristics of speech are preserved through different transmissions. It provides sufficient motivation for considering speaker recognition as a criterion for the migration from narrowband to enhanced bandwidths, such as wideband and super-wideband.
