Book Synopsis Modern South India by : Rajmohan Gandhi
Download or read book Modern South India written by Rajmohan Gandhi and published by Rupa. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South India story attempted here is of a peninsular region influenced by the oceans, not by the Himalayas. Yet it is more than that. It is a story of facets of four powerful culturesKannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, to name them in alphabetical orderand yet more than that, for Kodava, Konkani, Marathi, Oriya and Tulu cultures have also influenced it, as also other older and possibly more indigenous cultures often seen as tribal, as well as cultures originating in other parts of India and the world. With South Indias Malayalam region being (in modern times) the most balanced in terms of religion and also the most literate, its Kannada zone occupying South Indias geographical centre and containing the sites of the Vijayanagara kingdom and also the kingdom of Haidar and Tipu, its Telugu portion the largest in area and holding the most people, and its Tamil part the most Dravidian and possessing the oldest literature, the four principal cultures are, unsurprisingly, competitive. But they are also complementary. This is a Dravidian story, and also more than that. It is a story involving four centuries, the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth, yet other periods intrude upon it...

Download or read book The Sun Behind the Cloud written by Basavaraj Naikar and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun Behind The Cloud delineates the microscopic history of the colonial encounter between Bhaskararao Bhave of Peshwa dynasty of Naragund kingdom in South India and the authorities of the East India Company around 1857. Exasperated by the Political Agent for South India, Mr. Manson's refusal of permission to adopt a legal heir to his kingdom, he attacks the latter and kills him arousing the anger of the East India Company. He prepares himself to wage a war against the enemy by rallying the like-minded neighbouring kings. But he is betrayed by his own officers and Bhaskararao Bhave is defeated by the army of the East India Company led by Colonel Malcolm. He is caught, imprisoned, tried and sentenced to death by the East India Company. Again to the strange quirk of his fate he escapes from the prison as his cook impersonates him and volunteers to be hanged to death out of his loyalty to the master. Bhaskararao, who is taken to be dead, lives and wanders in disguise. He goes to Nepal and meets Nanasaheb Peshwa, who compliments him for kindling the spark of freedom in India. The novel recreates an important chunk of Indian history of the colonial period and rehabilitates a forgotten hero, who sowed the seeds of freedom and nationalism in the 19th century itself.
Download or read book The Loom of Time written by Kalidasa and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kalidasa is the major poet and dramatist of classical Sanskrit literature - a many-sided talent of extraordinary scope and exquisite language. His great poem, Meghadutam (The Cloud Messenger), tells of a divine being, punished for failing in his sacred duties with a years' separation from his beloved. A work of subtle emotional nuances, it is a haunting depiction of longing and separation. The play Sakuntala describes the troubled love between a Lady of Nature and King Duhsanta. This beautiful blend of romance and comedy, transports its audience into an enchanted world in which mortals mingle with gods. And Kalidasa's poem Rtusamharam (The Gathering of the Seasons) is an exuberant observation of the sheer variety of the natural world, as it teems with the energies of the great god Siva.
