Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the traditional ninth-grade classroom or the ninth-grade academy would have the greatest impact on retention rates and discipline referrals to administration of students transitioning into high school. The data in this causal-comparative research was secondary data collected from the counselors and administrators of the four schools that participated in this research study. The data was evaluated using an independent samples t-test. The results of this study did not indicate the need for transition programs based on the predicted significant statistical difference in the retention rates and in the Group A and B offense discipline referrals to administration of students that were exposed to a ninth-grade academy vs. involvement in a traditional ninth-grade classroom. However, limitations for this study do reveal that there is still a need for further research. These results can assist school systems in finding ways to make sure appropriate decisions are made for the positive transition of ninth-grade students into high school. Additionally, this information can assist high school administrators in finding funding for the program and in building schedules that would support the implementation of ninth-grade academies. There was no statistically significant difference found, in this study, in the retention rate nor the Group A and Group B offense office discipline referral rates of ninth-grade students based on their exposure to a ninth-grade academy vs. a traditional ninth-grade program.

Researchers and administrators have sought ways to improve academic performance and promotion rates while reducing dropout rates. A quantitative causal-comparative (ex post facto) and correlation study using a two-group design compared two freshman classes at separate comprehensive high schools in suburban Georgia. The treatment group, the freshman class implementing the freshman academy model, was compared to the control group, a traditional high school freshman class with no freshman academy. This study provides new research findings on the relationship and possible cause and effect a freshman academy may have on the ninth grade Literature/Composition End of Course Test (EOCT) scores when controlling for the eighth grade Reading Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) scores and the eighth grade English/Language Arts CRCT scores. Evidence was found to suggest that participation in a freshman academy can improve the probability that a student will be promoted from ninth to tenth grade on-time. No other significant differences were found when looking at the dropout rate, graduation rate, and grade point averages at the end of the ninth grade year. When controlling for eighth grade Reading CRCT and eighth grade English/Language Arts CRCT scores, there was no significant difference in ninth grade Literature/Composition End of Course Test (EOCT) scores between the two groups.

For all dependent variables that were used to measure achievement for the research questions: Graduation Rate, attendance, and End of Course Tests in Ninth Grade Literature and Ninth Grade Algebra I, there was a significant statistical difference between the two groups. For all research questions, the results indicated the Traditional Comprehensive High Schools measured higher percentages in Graduation Rate, End of Course Tests, and attendance than the Ninth Grade Academies.

Book excerpt: In an era where ninth grade is the most populated grade level, and studies show that more students drop out in ninth grade than any other grade level, there was a need to review research to determine if ninth grade centers have a significant impact on student achievement. Statistics show, and researchers agree, that a student's attendance and academic success in his or her ninth grade year can determine, and even predict, whether the student remains on track to graduate high school in four years. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if relationships exist between participation in ninth grade centers and student achievement, as measured by retention rates, standardized test scores, attendance rates, and dropout rates. The data used in this study came from 132 traditional high schools and 10 stand-alone ninth grade centers within the Greater Houston area or Region 4, which encompass 53 school districts covering 7 counties. The Region 4 students come from a number of diverse backgrounds. The overall racial composition is 43% Hispanic, 29% Caucasian, 22% African American, 6% Asian, and 0.2% Native American, although these ratios vary widely between school districts. About 75% of students from Region 4 come from economically disadvantaged families and 19% have limited English proficiency. Pearson's chi-squared test of homogeneity of proportions was used to identify any differences between the variables under analysis. The results of the data analysis revealed there was a significant difference between the ninth grade center group, those separated from other grade levels and housed at a stand-alone campus, and the Region 4 group of ninth graders, those housed in a traditional 9th-12th grade setting, in their dropout rates and student performance on standardized tests. The Region 4 group of ninth graders had significantly higher attendance rates when compared to that of the ninth grade center group. The data results also revealed that there were no significant differences between these groups when analyzing retention rates. The results of this study may provide more insight into strategies and interventions educators may use to improve ninth grade student performance and the organizational design that will benefit students the most.

Many of these students complete graduation requirements later giving the United States a 93% high school completion rate (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). While there are many factors that may cause a student to not complete high school, retention can play a significant role. While there are positive effects to retaining a student, grade retention increases the risk of dropping out by 30 - 50 percent (Shane R. Jimerson, Anderson, & Whipple, 2002). Students that are retained in two grades are 90 percent more likely to drop out (Mann, 1987). Across the United States, there are interventions and programs designed to reduce the dropout rate by providing previously retained students the opportunity to complete two years of course material in one year in an effort to catch students up to their original graduating class. The purpose of this study was to examine the academic success of one of these grade recovery programs over time. Archival data on students who participated in Course Acceleration Remediation and Enrichment (C.A.R.E.) Academy were collected from Gizmo Independent School District (GISD) (pseudonym). Math and reading state assessment scores and end of the year math and language arts course grades for seventh and ninth grade were examined along with graduation completion rates of students who were successful in the program (n = 579). High school completion data were analyzed for the two cohorts who have matriculated past grade twelve. The study revealed C.A.R.E. Academy students had a lower passing percentage on seventh and ninth grade math state assessment exams and the ninth grade reading state assessment exam; however, had a higher passing percentage on the seventh grade reading state assessment exam and all examined courses (seventh grade math and language arts and ninth grade Algebra I and English I) when compared to the district at-risk population. Overall, C.A.R.E. Academy students that continued their education in GISD completed high school with a 97% graduation rate. The results of this study should encourage school leaders to not only understand the impact retention can have on the dropout rate and student progress but also what interventions are successful in supporting retained students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the number of days of in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, and alternative discipline placements impacts mathematics achievement as measured by the 2011TAKS assessment in a Houston school district. This study compared grade nine, ten, and eleven TAKS math achievement scores to the number of days served in out-of-class discipline placements for African American students as it relates to gender and reported socioeconomic status. The subjects in this study are ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade African American students in the research district who were assessed with the mathematics TAKS assessment in the spring of 2011. With the permission of the research district, archival data was gathered from both the research district's PEIMS summer 2011 submission to the state of Texas and the TAKS data file provided by Pearson Education, Inc. Survey data was gathered from campus principals to determine if principal attitudes about discipline and race affected the district's placement data. Descriptive statistics were analyzed in conjunction with the qualitative principal analysis.
