Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Fiction, Vol. 3 of 3: Being a Critical Account of the Most Celebrated Prose Works of Fiction, From the Earliest Greek Romances to the Novels of the Present Age The history of J osaphat and Barlaam, of which an account has already been given, and which was written to inspire a taste for the ascetic virtues, seems to have been the origin of Spiritual Ro mance. It is true, that in the first ages of the church, many fictitious gospels were composed, full of im probable fables; but, as they contained opinions in contradiction to what was deemed the orthodox faith, they were discountenanced by the fathers of the church, and soon fell into disrepute. On the other hand, the history of J osaphat and Barlaam, which was more sound in its doctrine, passed at an early period into the west of Europe, and through the medium of the old Latin translation, which was _a common manuscript, and was even printed so early as the year 1470, it became a very general favourite. She was very pale, her hands were clasped tightly together - so much he gathered in the space of a moment but he had not looked at her, he felt that he dared not, that more ter rible to him than any other sight upon earth might be to him the answer to the question asked by his eyes. The formal introduction over, he did not stir, he could not; but all at once he became conscious that a little hand, cold as his own, was touching his and then with a mighty effort he took it, and looked up. She would not have given him her hand thus had she known all her husband had evidently told her nothing, and in her eyes as yet he was not the thing accursed that he had schooled himself to believe that he was. Nevertheless the touch of her hand seemed to scorch him he relinquished it with haste, and turned to Flora. I did not know that you were the sister of Mr. Montrose, he said, in a strangely dull. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romance and Reality, Vol. 3 of 3 Edward paced the room mournfully: he gazed on the slight remains of taste which had turned wealth to beauty. But the most touching part of all, was to mark the effort that had been made to restore something Of comfort and appearance. He thought of the beautiful face he had seen for a moment - it looked yery young to have known much Of suffering. The door Of the room opened, and the negro appeared, bringing in supper; and the little table was soon spread. There was a flask of light wine, a melon, some bread, and fried fish. And with all the volubility Of his race, Caesar explained, that the ladies sent their excuses, and that to-morrow they hoped to make him personally welcome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rose D'albret, or Troublous Times, Vol. 3 of 3: A Romance More wonderful and striking scenes than the boldest poet would venture to display. There is not a house in the land but has its tragedy to tell; there is not a chamber that has not been stained by bitter and passionate tears; there is hardly one human heart that has not within itself its own tale of romance. But as it is the object of this history, but to de pict events very ordinary in the days to which it relates - and as it is, indeed, the object of its author in all his works, to keep to calm and quiet probabilities, in order, if possible, to cure his fellow countrymen of that longing for over excitement, that moral gin-drinking which has become a vice amongst us, and teach them that there may be both pleasure and health in less stimulating beverages; he is anxious to explain every event as it took place, and to leave nothing to the charge of the marvellous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Romances of William Morris: In Prose and Verse It may not be inappropriate here to say a word about the technique Of that first book. On a question of this kind it is only With great diffidence that one would care to dissent from Mr. Swinburne, who finds it to be blundering and stumbling, and altogether very faulty, and regards Morris very much as an amateur in the matter of the craft of versification. The merit of the book - according to Mr. Swinburne - lies almost entirely in its passion, emotional depth, and truth. But this is probably due to the fact that Morris aimed at something very different from the aims Of Mr. Swinburne. He never attempted to write lines of their own arduous fulness reverent. He often de liberately ignored the aids to that fulness which are given by elision and elision - Mr. Swinburne says - is a law, not a privilege. But Morris aimed at an effect which he could only obtain by his own methods. His verses should be read slowly, almost syllable by syllable, with due regard to their child-like flair/etc, and the reader will soon perceive that a poem like the Defence of Gamer/ere, with its extraordinarily over-lapping lines, and rhymes so unexpected that at first sight they seem rambling and bungling, is a consummate work of art. The feverish wanderings of the half-distraught queen's speech could not have been rendered more magnificently than in this curiously-wrought piece of terza-n'ma. On the subject of Morris's verse we are compelled to differ from Mr. Swinburne, though we cannot enter into the matter very fully here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Fiction, Vol. 2 of 3: Being a Critical Account of the Most Celebrated Prose Works of Fiction, From the Earliest Greek Romances to the Novels of the Present Age The French writers, on the other hand, and par ticularly the Comte de Tressan, in his preface to the Traduction libre d' Amadis de Gaule, have insisted that the work (or at least the three first of the four books it contains) Was originally written in French, in the reign of Philip Augustus, or one' of his predecessors. His arguments rest on some vague assertions in old French manuscripts, that Amadis had been at one time extant, and on the similarity of the manners, and even incidents, de scribed ih Amadis, with those of Tristan and Lan celot, which are avowedly French: he thinks it also immobable that while such hatred subsisted between the French and Spaniards, an author of the latter nation should have chosen a Gallic knight for his favourite hero; but this argument strikes only against a Spanish and not a Portugueze ori ginal. To the reasons of Tressan, however, may be added the testimony of one Portugueze poet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 12 A kind communication received from a correspondent enables us to correct this mistake. De Quincey's Fatal Marksman, it obligingly informs us, is from the German of J. A. Apel, and is not the only existing English translation of the original story by that author, - another having appeared, under the title of Der Freisclnitz or The Magic Ball9, in a volume of "Tales of the Wild and Wonderful" published in 1825 by Hurst, Robinson, & Co. of London. With the help of the clue so furnished, we have ascertained the following particulars: - In the first volume of the Gespcnsterbuch, or Book of Ghost Stories, published at Leipsig in 1810-14 by Johann August Apel (1771-1816), in conjunction with Friedrich August Schulz, another popular German author of that date, but writing always under the assumed name of Friedrich Laun (1770-1849), there appeared Der Freischiitz, a story of Apel's, which soon afterwards became immortal by being used by Weber's friend Friedrich Kind for the libretto of Weber's famous opera, first produced in Berlin in 1822. To the popularity of this opera must be due the fact that there were two early translations of Apel's story into English. But Dc Quincey's translation was earlier by two years than that mentioned by our correspondent; for, having looked by mere accident into an anonymous three-volume collection of "Popular Tales and Romances of the Northern Nations," published in 1823 by Simpkin and Marshall of London, there, to our surprise, in vol. iii, we found De Quincey's Fatal Markman, exactly as we now have it, both title and text, but without the name of either the original author or the translator. The inference is that one of De Quincey's little commercial asides in 1823, when he was at his busiest in writing for the London Magazine, was this contribution to a collection of Tales from the German, and that, having a copy of it beside him in 1859, he thought it then worth reprinting just as it stood.
