Book excerpt: Since the publication of my lecture notes, Functional Differential Equations in the Applied Mathematical Sciences series, many new developments have occurred. As a consequence, it was decided not to make a few corrections and additions for a second edition of those notes, but to present a more compre hensive theory. The present work attempts to consolidate those elements of the theory which have stabilized and also to include recent directions of research. The following chapters were not discussed in my original notes. Chapter 1 is an elementary presentation of linear differential difference equations with constant coefficients of retarded and neutral type. Chapter 4 develops the recent theory of dissipative systems. Chapter 9 is a new chapter on perturbed systems. Chapter 11 is a new presentation incorporating recent results on the existence of periodic solutions of autonomous equations. Chapter 12 is devoted entirely to neutral equations. Chapter 13 gives an introduction to the global and generic theory. There is also an appendix on the location of the zeros of characteristic polynomials. The remainder of the material has been completely revised and updated with the most significant changes occurring in Chapter 3 on the properties of solutions, Chapter 5 on stability, and Chapter lOon behavior near a periodic orbit.

Book excerpt: Functional Equations, Inequalities and Applications provides an extensive study of several important equations and inequalities, useful in a number of problems in mathematical analysis. Subjects dealt with include the generalized Cauchy functional equation, the Ulam stability theory in the geometry of partial differential equations, stability of a quadratic functional equation in Banach modules, functional equations and mean value theorems, isometric mappings, functional inequalities of iterative type, related to a Cauchy functional equation, the median principle for inequalities and applications, Hadamard and Dragomir-Agarwal inequalities, the Euler formulae and convex functions and approximate algebra homomorphisms. Also included are applications to some problems of pure and applied mathematics. This book will be of particular interest to mathematicians and graduate students whose work involves functional equations, inequalities and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a self-contained and unified introduction to the properties of analytic functions. Based on recent research results, it provides many examples of functional equations to show how analytic solutions can be found.Unlike in other books, analytic functions are treated here as those generated by sequences with positive radii of convergence. By developing operational means for handling sequences, functional equations can then be transformed into recurrence relations or difference equations in a straightforward manner. Their solutions can also be found either by qualitative means or by computation. The subsequent formal power series function can then be asserted as a true solution once convergence is established by various convergence tests and majorization techniques. Functional equations in this book may also be functional differential equations or iterative equations, which are different from the differential equations studied in standard textbooks since composition of known or unknown functions are involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A functional differential equation of neutral type is a differential system in which the rate of change of the system depends not only upon the past history but also the derivative of the past history of the system. For example, the system (1.1) x dot (t) + A x dot (t - 1) = f(t, x(t), x(t - 1)) is a functional differential or differential difference equation of neutral type. It is the purpose of this paper to give sufficient conditions for the stability and instability of solutions of a large class of equations (1.1) in terms of functions similar to those occurring in the application of the second method of Liapunov to ordinary and functional differential equations of retarded type. The basic restriction on the class of systems is that the derivatives occur linearly with coefficients depending only upon t and that the 'difference' operator associated with the equation is stable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Applications and Theory of Functional Equations focuses on the principles and advancement of numerical approaches used in functional equations. The publication first offers information on the history of functional equations, noting that the research on functional equations originated in problems related to applied mathematics. The text also highlights the influence of J. d'Alembert, S. D. Poisson, E. Picard, and A. L. Cauchy in promoting the processes of numerical analyses involving functional equations. The role of vectors in solving functional equations is also noted. The book ponders on the international Fifth Annual Meeting on Functional Equations, held in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada on April 24-30, 1967. The meeting gathered participants from America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. One of the topics presented at the meeting focuses on the survey of materials dealing with the progress of approaches in the processes and methodologies involved in solving problems dealing with functional equations. The influence, works, and contributions of A. L. Cauchy, G. Darboux, and G. S. Young to the field are also underscored. The publication is a valuable reference for readers interested in functional equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A functional differential equation of neutral type is an equation for a function x in which the derivative x dot of x at time t depends not only upon the past and present values of x, but also upon the past and present values of x dot. A general class of linear functional differential equations of neutral type is defined in the space of continuous functions. For this class, a variation of constants formula is derived which gives the solution of a nonhomogeneous linear equation with zero initial data as an integral of the forcing function. It is then shown that the kernel in this integral representation can be used to obtain the general solution of the homogeneous equation. The stability properties of the solutions of the homogeneous equation are characterized in terms of the kernel in the variation of constants formula. Section 3 is devoted to the stability of solutions of equations which are linear or nonlinear perturbations of a given linear system. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book deals with linear functional differential equations and operator theory methods for their investigation. The main topics are: the equivalence of the input-output stability of the equation Lx = &mathsf; and the invertibility of the operator L in the class of casual operators; the equivalence of input-output and exponential stability; the equivalence of the dichotomy of solutions for the homogeneous equation Lx = 0 and the invertibility of the operator L; the properties of Green's function; the independence of the stability of an equation from the norm on the space of solutions; shift invariant functional differential equations in Banach space; the possibility of the reduction of an equation of neutral type to an equation of retarded type; special full subalgebras of integral and difference operators, and operators with unbounded memory; and the analogue of Fredholm's alternative for operators with almost periodic coefficients where one-sided invertibility implies two-sided invertibility. Audience: This monograph will be of interest to students and researchers working in functional differential equations and operator theory and is recommended for graduate level courses.

This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book builds upon an earlier work of J. Hale, "Theory of Func tional Differential Equations" published in 1977. We have tried to maintain the spirit of that book and have retained approximately one-third of the material intact. One major change was a complete new presentation of lin ear systems (Chapters 6~9) for retarded and neutral functional differential equations. The theory of dissipative systems (Chapter 4) and global at tractors was completely revamped as well as the invariant manifold theory (Chapter 10) near equilibrium points and periodic orbits. A more complete theory of neutral equations is presented (see Chapters 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10). Chapter 12 is completely new and contains a guide to active topics of re search. In the sections on supplementary remarks, we have included many references to recent literature, but, of course, not nearly all, because the subject is so extensive. Jack K. Hale Sjoerd M.
