Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess the acute effects of static stretching on foot velocity at impact with a soccer ball. Eighteen Division I female soccer athletes underwent two test conditions separated by 48 hr. Each condition was randomly assigned and began by placing four retro-reflective markers on bony landmarks of the ankle (total of eight markers, four on each ankle). One condition was the no-stretch condition, in which each participant performed a self-paced jog for 5 min as a warm-up, and then sat quietly for 6 min before performing three maximal instep kicks into a net. The second condition was the stretch condition, which was identical to the no-stretch condition, except the participants performed a series of six randomly ordered stretches instead of sitting quietly for 6 min. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to quantify the resultant velocity of the head of the 5th metatarsal immediately prior to foot impact with a soccer ball. The results of a dependent t test indicated that there was no significant difference between the no-stretch (18.34 " 1.29 m/s) and stretch conditions (17.96 " 1.55 m/s; p = .102, d = .3) Based on these findings, acute stretching performed one time for 30 s before maximal instep soccer kicking has no effect on the resultant foot velocity of Division 1A university female soccer players. Pre-event stretching performed in a like manner may best be prescribed at the discretion of the athlete.

This study will focus on the biomechanics analysis on the ten male Majlis Sukan Negeri Terengganu (MSNT) football players as well as to clarify the difference between three types of step run using kinematic variables and electromyography analysis. Electromyography data management and analysis are using Origin Pro 8.5.1 software and the statistical analysis carried out by using the ANOVA analysis. In order to observe the kicking motion experiment, the subjects will perform the instep kicking on the plane of activity in the laboratory. The image of the instep kicking was shot using high speed camera (250Hz). The subject tried to kick a ball at their full strength for each kick, namely the one step kick, two step kick and three step kick. The results indicate that there was no great difference in performance between the muscle of Quadriceps and Hamstring to the pairing of the three types of step run, though muscle discharge of the Calves and Tibialis Anterior show greater values in the group of pairing the three type of step. Image of the instep kicking was captured during the study and is useful to get the data of the kicking action for the kinematic variables. In this context, kinematics variable can be determine such as leg velocity, ball velocity, ball deformation, coefficient of restitution (COR) and force by leg. Based on the investigation with same leg velocity after impact which is 16 m/s, the highest force for leg is 5378.95N and the highest ball velocity is 23.07 m/s. The maximum ball deformation and coefficient of restitution noted as 0.018m and 0.86. These finding led to the conclusion that in a comparison between the kicking, three steps run demonstrates higher kinematics variables value compared to the one step and two step of kick.

It describes the development and validation of finite element models of soccer ball and human head, as well as the simulation of brain dynamics after ball-to-head impact. In addition, it also presents a computational study of the efficacy of wearing protective headgear in mitigating the risk of concussion due to heading in soccer.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world and the substantial increase in participation over the last decade adds significance to understanding kicking mechanics as kicking is a key skill during a game. The biomechanics of soccer kicking have been widely investigated and there is a conventional belief that a tradeoff exists between speed and accuracy during kicking performance. However, the kinetics and kinematics of the kicking leg during the approach to the ball remain unclear and whether or not instep soccer kicks can be performed without a speed-accuracy tradeoff. The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinetic and kinematic differences between accurate and maximal effort soccer kicking in female soccer players. Twenty female soccer players from the college club or varsity level performed three trials of an accurate kick and three trials of a maximal effort kick. Bilateral hip, knee and ankle joint angles and velocities and ground reaction forces (GRFs) of the kicking leg (KL) and plant leg (PL) were calculated. In addition, correlation coefficients were calculated between variables in each condition. During maximal effort kicking, players significantly increased peak hip, knee and ankle angles (p = 0.000, p = 0.000, p = 0.034), angular velocities (p = 0.000, p = 0.000, p = 0.004), and foot velocity (p = 0.000) in the KL. This was likely the result of the significant increase in peak horizontal GRF in the KL (p = 0.000) and PL (p = 0.000). Peak horizontal GRF in the KL had the strongest correlation with foot linear velocity in accurate kicking (R = 0.77*) compared to in maximal effort kicking (R = 60*), and had a stronger influence on foot velocity compared to peak horizontal GRF in the PL in both accurate (R = 0.31*) and maximal effort (0.23) conditions. This suggests that peak horizontal GRF in the KL, rather than in the PL, plays a more important role in kick velocity, especially when kicking accurately. Results indicate that increasing horizontal GRF in the KL in both conditions is key to improving velocity since that variable is highly correlated in each condition. In addition, less variation of horizontal GRFs in the KL in maximal effort kicking indicate faster kicks result in more consistent foot velocities and suggests that players reduce variability as they approach maximum velocity. These results provide evidence that accuracy may not have to be sacrificed when kicks are faster if players practice accurate performances when kicking with maximum velocity due to the less variability in the initial programmed pattern of movement during fast performances. Coaches and trainers may utilize these results to develop training protocols that involve increasing GRFs of the KL and practicing kicks that are both accurate and fast to increase overall accuracy during maximum velocity instep soccer kicks.

Book excerpt: Science and Football V presents the edited papers from the Fifth World Congress on Science and Football that took place in Portugal in April 2003. The collection represents the latest scientific research into the variety of sports known as football such as association football; rugby codes (Union and League); national codes (American, Australian and Gaelic). A recurring theme for this series of conferences has been a commitment to bridge the gaps between theory and practice in the service of the promotion of high quality applied football science. The book is clearly structured into nine parts and focuses on the following key issues: introductory keynote address biomechanics and mechanics fitness test profiling of footballers performance and match analysis football medicine football training paediatric exercise science physiology and nutrition behavioural and social sciences. This collection provides valuable information for coaches, players, trainers, managers, medical and support staff, and scientific workers concerned with the range of football codes.
