Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a full discussion of the current research in late-Bronze Age III pottery in Crete. The contributors of the 12 essays are archaeologists presently studying late-Minoan (LM) III pottery, preferably from stratified excavations in the significant LM settlements and tombs of Crete, as well as scholars who have already published their findings. The book presents material from important excavations in Crete, Also included is a useful, ten-page chart organising the names, with line drawings of the 78 prevailing vase types of the period. Additional essays provide background for the appreciation of previously published articles and monographs on LM III pottery by highlighting past and current controversies, most confined to the development of Minoan pottery. The late-Bronze Age III in Crete is a relatively new area of research; a definition of the current situation was deemed necessary as a starting point to the future exchange of ideas and experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering approximately the century between 1300 and 1200 BC, the Late Minoan IIIB phase remains a blurred episode of Minoan civilisation. Archaeological data present a contradictory picture: on the one hand, they suggest a time of prosperity. with favourable conditions of subsistence and growth; on the other hand, there are signs of trouble illustrated by a series of abandonments of century-old occupied settlements. Did these processes take place simultaneously, in succession or were they punctual? Can we make sense of the various hale Minoan IIIB developments from a chronological perspective? How can a region-by region analysis inform us about the various island communities and their histories during the 13th century BC? The international workshop which the present volume reflects took place at the UCLouvainin Belgium on the 24th and 25th of October 2013. It specifically addressed these questions and focused on the gradual transformation of Cretan society throughout the 13th century BC by concentrating on a single aspect of its material culture: the pottery. It was our infention to bring together a number of ceramic experts in charge of the study of Late Minoan IIIB pottery deposits in a selection of Cretan sites. We wanted them to discuss, confront and contextualise their respective assemblages. The gathering was successful in many ways and not in the least because not only we managed to progress on a variety of thorny issues but it was also a real treat to assist in the thrilling exchanges between the inspiring personalities who compose the ’family’ of Minoan (and Mycenaean) pottery specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations carried out at two Late Minoan III sites at Mochlos in eastern Crete yielded a pottery assemblage from 31 tombs and 11 houses, which are cataloged, discussed, and illustrated together with petrographic analyses. The cemetery remains mirror the settlement remains, and the conclusions discuss how the two sites reflect each other. Rarely in Crete are a settlement and its cemetery both preserved, and it is extremely fortunate to be able to document both in a series of scientific excavation reports (Mochlos vols. IIA-IIC).

Book excerpt: Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns. With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.

Book excerpt: The aim of this handbook is to make Mycenaean pottery more accessible to the general reader by presenting a brief description of the different types, placing it against its archaeological and historical background. Mountjoy expands on the illustrations from her 1986 guide Mycenaean Decorated Pottery to include material from different areas of Greece, allowing an examination of the exchange and trade of Mycenean pottery. Particular emphasis is made to the definition of ceramic phases, for although imprecise, changes in pottery style are the best chronological measure for the Aegean Bronze Age.

Book excerpt: The primary intent of this research project is to improve anthropological understanding of the structure of the Mycenaean state of Pylos through archaeological reconstruction of the Late Bronze Age regional ceramic production and exchange system, using methods of petrographic and chemical analysis. In addition to its primary goal, it also encompasses several secondary goals. First, regional settlement data collected by survey projects in Greece strongly encourage comparison of Mycenaean to other archaic states. Parallels are thus drawn whenever possible and general questions of state origins and organization are addressed. Second, study of the Pylian ceramic industry is interesting and informative in itself, and results can be compared to ceramic manufacture and exchange in other parts of the world, at different times and levels of social complexity. Finally, this research integrates "classical" approaches to Old World archaeology with "anthropological" approaches to the study of complex societies.udy of complex societies.udy of complex societies.udy of complex societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek Bronze Age, roughly 3000 to 1000 BCE, witnessed the flourishing of the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations, the earliest expansion of trade in the Aegean and wider Mediterranean Sea, the development of artistic techniques in a variety of media, and the evolution of early Greek religious practices and mythology. The period also witnessed a violent conflict in Asia Minor between warring peoples in the region, a conflict commonly believed to be the historical basis for Homer's Trojan War. The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean provides a detailed survey of these fascinating aspects of the period, and many others, in sixty-six newly commissioned articles. Divided into four sections, the handbook begins with Background and Definitions, which contains articles establishing the discipline in its historical, geographical, and chronological settings and in its relation to other disciplines. The second section, Chronology and Geography, contains articles examining the Bronze Age Aegean by chronological period (Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age). Each of the periods are further subdivided geographically, so that individual articles are concerned with Mainland Greece during the Early Bronze Age, Crete during the Early Bronze Age, the Cycladic Islands during the Early Bronze Age, and the same for the Middle Bronze Age, followed by the Late Bronze Age. The third section, Thematic and Specific Topics, includes articles examining thematic topics that cannot be done justice in a strictly chronological/geographical treatment, including religion, state and society, trade, warfare, pottery, writing, and burial customs, as well as specific events, such as the eruption of Santorini and the Trojan War. The fourth section, Specific Sites and Areas, contains articles examining the most important regions and sites in the Bronze Age Aegean, including Mycenae, Tiryns, Pylos, Knossos, Kommos, Rhodes, the northern Aegean, and the Uluburun shipwreck, as well as adjacent areas such as the Levant, Egypt, and the western Mediterranean. Containing new work by an international team of experts, The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean represents the most comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date single-volume survey of the field. It will be indispensable for scholars and advanced students alike.

Frescoes, jewelry, sculpture, gold funeral masks, ivories, and countless other beautiful artifacts--all the significant works of art and architecture that are our legacy from those great civilizations in the third and second millennia BC are described and illustrated in Dr. Higgins's distinguished survey. This fully revised and updated edition includes greater coverage of the breathtaking frescoes from Akrotiri on the island of Thera. Other recent findings are also illustrated and described in detail, such as the unique ivory figure from Palaikastro, objects from the palace of Mallia, and the intriguing discovery of Minoan frescoes in Egypt.
