Book excerpt: Classical potential theory can be roughly characterized as the study of Newtonian potentials and the Laplace operator on the Euclidean space JR3. It was discovered around 1930 that there is a profound connection between classical potential 3 theory and the theory of Brownian motion in JR . The Brownian motion is determined by its semigroup of transition probabilities, the Brownian semigroup, and the connection between classical potential theory and the theory of Brownian motion can be described analytically in the following way: The Laplace operator is the infinitesimal generator for the Brownian semigroup and the Newtonian potential kernel is the" integral" of the Brownian semigroup with respect to time. This connection between classical potential theory and the theory of Brownian motion led Hunt (cf. Hunt [2]) to consider general "potential theories" defined in terms of certain stochastic processes or equivalently in terms of certain semi groups of operators on spaces of functions. The purpose of the present exposition is to study such general potential theories where the following aspects of classical potential theory are preserved: (i) The theory is defined on a locally compact abelian group. (ii) The theory is translation invariant in the sense that any translate of a potential or a harmonic function is again a potential, respectively a harmonic function; this property of classical potential theory can also be expressed by saying that the Laplace operator is a differential operator with constant co efficients.

Book excerpt: It is well known that if two independent identically distributed random variables are Gaussian, then their sum and difference are also independent. It turns out that only Gaussian random variables have such property. This statement, known as the famous Kac-Bernstein theorem, is a typical example of a so-called characterization theorem. Characterization theorems in mathematical statistics are statements in which the description of possible distributions of random variables follows from properties of some functions of these random variables. The first results in this area are associated with famous 20th century mathematicians such as G. Pólya, M. Kac, S. N. Bernstein, and Yu. V. Linnik. By now, the corresponding theory on the real line has basically been constructed. The problem of extending the classical characterization theorems to various algebraic structures has been actively studied in recent decades. The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive and self-contained overview of the current state of the theory of characterization problems on locally compact Abelian groups. The book will be useful to everyone with some familiarity of abstract harmonic analysis who is interested in probability distributions and functional equations on groups.

Book excerpt: This book deals with linear functional differential equations and operator theory methods for their investigation. The main topics are: the equivalence of the input-output stability of the equation Lx = &mathsf; and the invertibility of the operator L in the class of casual operators; the equivalence of input-output and exponential stability; the equivalence of the dichotomy of solutions for the homogeneous equation Lx = 0 and the invertibility of the operator L; the properties of Green's function; the independence of the stability of an equation from the norm on the space of solutions; shift invariant functional differential equations in Banach space; the possibility of the reduction of an equation of neutral type to an equation of retarded type; special full subalgebras of integral and difference operators, and operators with unbounded memory; and the analogue of Fredholm's alternative for operators with almost periodic coefficients where one-sided invertibility implies two-sided invertibility. Audience: This monograph will be of interest to students and researchers working in functional differential equations and operator theory and is recommended for graduate level courses.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on lectures given at the workshop on pseudo-differential operators held at the Fields Institute from December 11, 2006 to December 15, 2006. The two main themes of the workshop and hence this volume are partial differential equations and time-frequency analysis. The contents of this volume consist of five mini-courses for graduate students and post-docs, and fifteen papers on related topics. Of particular interest in this volume are the mathematical underpinnings, applications and ramifications of the relatively new Stockwell transform, which is a hybrid of the Gabor transform and the wavelet transform. The twenty papers in this volume reflect modern trends in the development of pseudo-differential operators.

Book excerpt: This book considers various spaces and algebras made up of functions, measures, and other objects-situated always on one or another locally compact abelian group, and studied in the light of the Fourier transform. The emphasis is on the objects themselves, and on the structure-in-detail of the spaces and algebras. A mathematician needs to know only a little about Fourier analysis on the commutative groups, and then may go many ways within the large subject of harmonic analysis-into the beautiful theory of Lie group representations, for example. But this book represents the tendency to linger on the line, and the other abelian groups, and to keep asking questions about the structures thereupon. That tendency, pursued since the early days of analysis, has defined a field of study that can boast of some impressive results, and in which there still remain unanswered questions of compelling interest. We were influenced early in our careers by the mathematicians Jean-Pierre Kahane, Yitzhak Katznelson, Paul Malliavin, Yves Meyer, Joseph Taylor, and Nicholas Varopoulos. They are among the many who have made the field a productive meeting ground of probabilistic methods, number theory, diophantine approximation, and functional analysis. Since the academic year 1967-1968, when we were visitors in Paris and Orsay, the field has continued to see interesting developments. Let us name a few. Sam Drury and Nicholas Varopoulos solved the union problem for Helson sets, by proving a remarkable theorem (2.1.3) which has surely not seen its last use.

Book excerpt: This authoritative text studies pseudodifferential and Fourier integral operators in the framework of time-frequency analysis, providing an elementary approach, along with applications to almost diagonalization of such operators and to the sparsity of their Gabor representations. Moreover, Gabor frames and modulation spaces are employed to study dispersive equations such as the Schrödinger, wave, and heat equations and related Strichartz problems. The first part of the book is addressed to non-experts, presenting the basics of time-frequency analysis: short time Fourier transform, Wigner distribution and other representations, function spaces and frames theory, and it can be read independently as a short text-book on this topic from graduate and under-graduate students, or scholars in other disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to analysis with the right mix of abstract theories and concrete problems. Starting with general measure theory, the book goes on to treat Borel and Radon measures and introduces the reader to Fourier analysis in Euclidean spaces with a treatment of Sobolev spaces, distributions, and the corresponding Fourier analysis. It continues with a Hilbertian treatment of the basic laws of probability including Doob's martingale convergence theorem and finishes with Malliavin's "stochastic calculus of variations" developed in the context of Gaussian measure spaces. This invaluable contribution gives a taste of the fact that analysis is not a collection of independent theories, but can be treated as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infinitesimal analysis, once a synonym for calculus, is now viewed as a technique for studying the properties of an arbitrary mathematical object by discriminating between its standard and nonstandard constituents. Resurrected by A. Robinson in the early 1960's with the epithet 'nonstandard', infinitesimal analysis not only has revived the methods of infinitely small and infinitely large quantities, which go back to the very beginning of calculus, but also has suggested many powerful tools for research in every branch of modern mathematics. The book sets forth the basics of the theory, as well as the most recent applications in, for example, functional analysis, optimization, and harmonic analysis. The concentric style of exposition enables this work to serve as an elementary introduction to one of the most promising mathematical technologies, while revealing up-to-date methods of monadology and hyperapproximation. This is a companion volume to the earlier works on nonstandard methods of analysis by A.G. Kusraev and S.S. Kutateladze (1999), ISBN 0-7923-5921-6 and Nonstandard Analysis and Vector Lattices edited by S.S. Kutateladze (2000), ISBN 0-7923-6619-0

Book excerpt: The contributions contained in the volume, written by leading experts in their respective fields, are expanded versions of talks given at the INDAM Workshop "Anomalies in Partial Differential Equations" held in September 2019 at the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica, Dipartimento di Matematica "Guido Castelnuovo", Università di Roma "La Sapienza". The volume contains results for well-posedness and local solvability for linear models with low regular coefficients. Moreover, nonlinear dispersive models (damped waves, p-evolution models) are discussed from the point of view of critical exponents, blow-up phenomena or decay estimates for Sobolev solutions. Some contributions are devoted to models from applications as traffic flows, Einstein-Euler systems or stochastic PDEs as well. Finally, several contributions from Harmonic and Time-Frequency Analysis, in which the authors are interested in the action of localizing operators or the description of wave front sets, complete the volume.
