Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Centennial Biographical History of Hancock County, Ohio UT of the depths of his mature wisdom Carlyle wrote. History is the essence of innumerable biographies. Believing this to be a fact, there is no necessity of advancing any further reason for the compilation of such a work as this. If reliable history is to be the ultimate object. The section of Ohio embraced by this volume has sustained within its confines men who have been prominent in the history of the State. And even the nation, for a century. The annals teem with the records of strong and noble manhood. And, as Sumner has said, the true grand eur of nations is in those qualities which constitute the greatness of the individual. The final causes which shape the fortunes of individuals and the destinies of States are often the same. They are usually remote and obscure, and their influence scarcely perceived until manifestly declared bv results. That nation is the greatest which produces the greatest and most manly men and faithful women; and the intrinsic safety of a community depends not so much upon methods as upon that normal development from the deep resources of which proceeds all that is precious and perma nent in life. But such, a result may not consciously be contemplated by the actors in the great social drama. Pursuing each his personal good by exalted means, they work out as a logical result. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a swampy forest, Hancock County grew to a hub of agriculture, industry and culture. The promise of free fuel and land brought numerous factories to Findlay. One, the Dalzell, Gilmore & Leighton Glass Company, left a lasting legacy of collectible glassware. The need to drain fields and presence of a ready supply of clay encouraged the growth of brick and tile factories in Rawson, Arlington, McComb and Findlay. Entertainment and culture arrived in many forms. Sam Reeves Park in Arcadia featured vaudeville shows, baseball games and amusement rides. At Findlay's Riverside Park, the Green Mills Dance Hall hosted everyone from the Glenn Miller and Count Basie bands to Naked Onion and Mixed Emotions. Join Teresa Straley Lambert as she presents the vanished heritage of mills, milking, masks, medicine and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 19th century Ohio was reeling from a wave of lynchings and other acts of racially motivated mob violence. Many of these acts were attributed to well-known and respected men and women yet few of them were ever prosecuted--some were even lauded for taking the law into their own hands. In 1892, Ohio-born Benjamin Harrison was the first U.S. President to call for anti-lynching legislation. Four years later, his home state responded with the Smith Act "for the Suppression of Mob Violence." One of the most severe anti-lynching laws in the country, it was a major step forward, though it did little to address the underlying causes of racial intolerance and distrust of law enforcement. Chronicling hundreds of acts of mob violence in Ohio, this book explores the acts themselves, their motivations and the law's response to them.
