Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lineage of the "superflat" Murakami's vision of the Japanese aesthetic Takashi Murakami's irreverent, pop culture-infused art has made him one of the most recognized Japanese artists today. His bright, contemporary boisterousness, however, belies his deep scholarship and engagement with traditional Japanese art. Takashi Murakami: Lineage of Eccentrics presents key examples of Murakami's work alongside a rich selection of Japanese masterpieces spanning several centuries and arranged here according to concepts laid out by his mentor and foil, leading Japanese art historian Nobuo Tsuji. These include works by Kawanabe Kyosai, Soga Shohaku, Kano Eino, Ito Jakuchu and Hishikawa Moronobu. Beautifully illustrated with Tsuji's selections from the peerless Japanese art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as some of the artist's best-known works of painting and sculpture, the combination of old and new in this groundbreaking volume enriches our understanding of each, and ultimately shows us how contemporary art can be seen as part of a continuum or lineage. Takashi Murakami (born 1962) is an internationally acclaimed artist and the founder and president of Kaikai Kiki, an art production and management company based in Tokyo with a studio in New York City. He was the first person to earn a PhD in Nihonga--a form of Japanese paintings created using traditional materials and techniques--at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Over the last two decades, he has presented numerous exhibitions around the world, from Versailles to Qatar. His first major solo exhibition at a US museum was held in 2001 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, titled Takashi Murakami: Made in Japan. Murakami is well known for his corporate branding projects with Louis Vuitton, VANS, shu uemura, Issey Miyake, Lucien Pellat-Finet, Roppongi Hills and ComplexCon, as well as collaborations with musicians such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. In 2008, he was selected as one of TIME magazine's "100 Most Influential People." More recently, he has been working on film and animation productions, releasing his first live-action film, Jellyfish Eyes, in 2013 and an animated television series, 6HP (Six Hearts Princess), in 2017.

Book excerpt: The Speech Writer is a fictional documentary presented in the form of ten flip books (6 x 12 cm) in a slipcase. The contents follow a day in the life of a retired political speech writer. Surrounded by the memories of his family and his vast collection of speeches, he is a creature of habit, idiosyncratic behaviour and reclusive existence. Retired from a lifetime of public service work, his connection with the outside world takes the form of a daily broadcast from the comfort of his home. Passersby, now accustomed to the perplexing array of loudspeakers wired to the outside of his house, stop to listen for a few moments each day. We cannot hear him speak but witness instead a moment of ultimate freedom in the life of a man who formulated the rhetoric, visions, dreams and declarations of others.

Book excerpt: "Many famous artworks of the Italian Renaissance were made to celebrate love, marriage, and family. They were the pinnacles of a tradition, dating from early in the era, of commemorating betrothals, marriages, and the birth of children by commissioning extraordinary objects - maiolica, glassware, jewels, textiles, paintings - that were often also exchanged as gifts. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of artworks arising from Renaissance rituals of love and marriage and makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. The impressive range of works gathered in these pages extends from birth trays painted in the early fifteenth century to large canvases on mythological themes that Titian painted in the mid-1500s. Each work of art would have been recognized by contemporary viewers for its prescribed function within the private, domestic domain."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: For more than 25 years, Serena Bocchino has created art that energetically combines abstraction and expressionism with investigations into music, poetry, and dance. Bocchino is known primarily for her paintings, this American artist has also produced an impressive series of drawings and prints. Bocchino, growing up in a household with an artist mother always remembers making things. As a teen, she began oil painting and pastels and in College and Graduate School, she seriously pursued her studio practice majoring in studio art specifically painting and drawing. In 1985, Bocchino began to immerse herself in the New York Art World and began exhibiting her work professionally as an artist. Beginning in New York City's East Village to Tribeca to SoHo to the Lower East Side to Chelsea New York City, Bocchino has exhibited her work across the United States and Abroad. Her work method has developed from academic and traditional to the unique pouring method that she uses today. She has consistently worked on canvas and paper to explore and push parameters of the past in order to pioneer new processes. Utilizing paint and a variety of new materials, Bocchino continues to express an abstract dialogue with her work. This handsomely illustrated book is the first to document Bocchino's career as well as examine her work methodology and influences. The astute essays by Jonathan Goodman and Lisa A. Banner complemented by the contribution by Lily Zhang and a foreword by Kathleen Goncharov provide insights into Bocchino's paintings and drawings and the techniques she employs. Furthermore, these writings explore and analyze the idiosyncratic and deeply personal imagery that the artist creates. This book celebrates Serena Bocchino's inventive contributions to contemporary painting and drawing.?

He studied at the prestigious Royal Academy but failed to win the coveted Prix de Rome. He is often said to have reacted to this disappointment by throwing aside all hopes of a traditional artistic career and hastening out into the thoroughfares of Paris to sketch everything in sight, living an errant, bohemian existence and succumbing increasingly to an obsession with drawing. But despite his personal eccentricities he was employed as an illustrator all his life.

Book excerpt: In the high season of leisure reading and scholastic book challenges, Center for Book Arts presents Summer Reading, an exhibition of works by contemporary artists who take creative approaches to the book, text, and language. In this exhibition, the book is simultaneously complemented and subverted. Artists investigate the tradition of artist's books as artistic structure, storytelling in visual art, the narrative possibilities of language, and the object-ness of book material in circulation. Including prints, sculptures, and works on paper that explore the design and aesthetics of language, this exhibition celebrates the relationship between reading and making. Summer Reading extends beyond the gallery walls to include featured reading lists culled by the artist participants and associated lending lists for all ages, developed with our local partner libraries.Featuring Breanne Trammell, Cassie Tompkins, Colette Fu, Dan Walsh, Diane Samuels, Erik den Breejen, Jill Moser with Charles Bernstein & Major Jackson, Joy Drury Cox, Lenka Clayton, Lesley Dill, Mary Ellen Bartley, Meg Hitchcock, Michael Mandiberg, Shanti Grumbine, Skye Gilkerson, Tauba Auerbach (Diagonal Press), Travis Head, Ward Shelley

Book excerpt: Many of the sitters in this collection were John Singer Sargents close friends. They are posed informally, sometimes in the act of painting or singing, and it is evident from the bold way they confront us that they are personalities of a creative stamp. Brilliant as these pictures are as works of art and penetrating studies of character, they are also records of relationships, allegiances, influences and aspirations. This volume, and the exhibition it accompanies, aims to explore these friendships in depth and draw out their significance in the story of Sargents life and the development of his art. The book is structured chronologically, with sections arranged according to the places Sargent worked and formed relationships during his cosmopolitan career: Paris, London, New York, Italy and the Alps. The cast of characters includes famous names, among them Gabriel Fauré and Auguste Rodin, Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry James. But the authors also make their point with images of Sargents familiars, such as the artists Jane and Wilfrid de Glehn who accompanied him on his sketching expeditions to the Continent, and the Italian painter Ambrogio Raffele, a recurrent model in his Alpine studies. In such paintings Sargent explored the making of art (his own included) and the relationship of the artist to the natural world. These are examples of an absorbing range of images and personalities, all distinguished in one way or another for their artistry, and all linked by friendship and a shared aesthetic to the central figure of Sargent himself.

A scathing review in the newspaper 'Le Charivari' appeared under the title 'The Exhibition of the Impressionists', a derisive play on the title of one of the paintings by Monet on show, 'Impression, soleil levant' (Impression, Sunrise), thus giving this group of artists the name by which they would henceforth be known. This intriguing and colourful biography of Monet's world-famous painting accompanies an exhibition celebrating the 140th anniversary of the First Impressionist Exhibition. Author Biography: Marianne Mathieu is Deputy Director, Head of Collections and Communication of the Musee Marmottan Monet, Paris. Dominique Loebstein is the former head of documentary studies in the painting department of the Musee d'Orsay, Paris. Exhibition: Musée Monet Marottan, Paris, France (18.9.-18.1.2015).
