Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Pattern and Ecological Process is a major synthesis of 25 years of intensive research about the montane ash forests of Victoria, which support the world's tallest flowering plants and several of Australia's most high profile threatened and/or endangered species. It draws together major insights based on over 170 published scientific papers and books, offering a previously unrecognised set of perspectives of how forests function. The book combines key strands of research on wildfires, biodiversity conservation, logging, conservation management, climate change and basic forest ecology and management. It is divided into seven sections: introduction and background; forest cover and the composition of the forest; the structure of the forest; animal occurrence; disturbance regimes; forest management; and overview and future directions. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs and line drawings, Forest Pattern and Ecological Process is an essential reference for forest researchers, resource managers, conservation and wildlife biologists, ornithologists and mammalogists, policy makers, as well as general readers with interests in wildlife and forests. 2010 Whitley Certificate of Commendation for Zoological Text.

The book presents approaches to the formulation of ecologically sustainable forest practices through a more fundamental understanding of Eucalyptus. The 14 chapters of the book are divided into three sections covering: the ecological background to silvicultural practice; the regeneration and continuing development of the forests; and silvicultural practice, including the current practices within the eucalypt forests.

This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability and distribution of water resources in catchments are influenced by various natural and anthropogenic factors. Human-induced environmental changes are key factors controlling the hydrological flows of semi-arid catchments. Land degradation, water scarcity and inefficient utilization of available water resources continue to be important constraints for socio-economic development in the headwater catchments of the Nile river basin in particular over the Ethiopian Catchments. This research investigates the impact of landscape anthropogenic changes on the hydrological processes in the Upper Tekeze basin (A tributary of the Nile). The hydrology of the basin is investigated through analysis of hydro-climatic data, remote sensing techniques, new field measurements and parsimonious hydrological models. The empirical evidence provided in this book confirms that human-induced environmental changes can significantly change the hydrology of catchments, both in negative (degradation) and in positive (restoration) ways. This book also shows that rainfall-runoff relationships in semi-arid catchments are non-uniform and hence the application of hydrological models in such catchments need special attention. Moreover, parsimonious dynamic hydrological model improves our understanding of the hydrological response to dynamic environmental changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides scientific evidence to underline the notion that forests offer the most reliable water catchments in the natural environment. The unique Australian ecosystem provides valuable information on the water yields and hydro-ecology of forests. Insights can be transferred to other climate zones and conditions. In this second edition, the author puts a particular focus on the most prominent challenges of our time, in relation to water management. Ground salinity, climate change, and droughts have all been newly added to this updated edition. One of the most important concepts is highlighting the accumulated contribution of smaller catchments and minor streams. Finally, readers will also get information on the economic dimension of water management. With its incisive, disciplined, and quantitative (and occasionally humorous) approach, this book helps scientists, students, and regulators to understand water-driven conflicts and offers guidance on management.

Book excerpt: This accessible volume fills a much-needed gap and addresses coreissues on how economic and environmental systems are interconnectedlooking at how economic frameworks and features of environmentalsystems can be integrated within formal models to address changesand associated resource management issues at appropriate levels:micro level and national or global level. The more the relationship between economic and environmentalsystems is studied analytically and empirically, the more aware webecome of the gap in our existing knowledge of environmental dataand process parameters. While important empirical questions areunanswered in environmental economics literature, work on theenvironmental science of ecological systems fails to raise theright questions and identify key variables in human-exploitedecosystems. This book covers: * Concepts and Methods * Land, Water and Production * Biodiversity, Preservation and Production * Pollution Externalities * The Environment and Global Economy This timely book will be of interest to environmental scientists, economists and policy makers, students, academics, and researchersinterested in ecosystems modelling, ecological economics andenvironmental resource economics.
