Book excerpt: The U.S. veterinary medical profession contributes to society in diverse ways, from developing drugs and protecting the food supply to treating companion animals and investigating animal diseases in the wild. In a study of the issues related to the veterinary medical workforce, including demographics, workforce supply, trends affecting job availability, and capacity of the educational system to fill future demands, a National Research Council committee found that the profession faces important challenges in maintaining the economic sustainability of veterinary practice and education, building its scholarly foundations, and evolving veterinary service to meet changing societal needs. Many concerns about the profession came into focus following the outbreak of West Nile fever in 1999, and the subsequent outbreaks of SARS, monkeypox, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, highly pathogenic avian influenza, H1N1 influenza, and a variety of food safety and environmental issues heightened public concerns. They also raised further questions about the directions of veterinary medicine and the capacity of public health service the profession provides both in the United States and abroad. To address some of the problems facing the veterinary profession, greater public and private support for education and research in veterinary medicine is needed. The public, policymakers, and even medical professionals are frequently unaware of how veterinary medicine fundamentally supports both animal and human health and well-being. This report seeks to broaden the public's understanding and attempts to anticipate some of the needs and measures that are essential for the profession to fulfill given its changing roles in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Research in veterinary science is critical for the health and well-being of animals, including humans. Food safety, emerging infectious diseases, the development of new therapies, and the possibility of bioterrorism are examples of issues addressed by veterinary science that have an impact on both human and animal health. However, there is a lack of scientists engaged in veterinary research. Too few veterinarians pursue research careers, and there is a shortage of facilities and funding for conducting research. This report identifies questions and issues that veterinary research can help to address, and discusses the scientific expertise and infrastructure needed to meet the most critical research needs. The report finds that there is an urgent need to provide adequate resources for investigators, training programs, and facilities involved in veterinary research.

Book excerpt: The publication of Alf Wight’s James Herriot books led to an upsurge in interest in the veterinary profession amongst the public and inspired many to study veterinary medicine. However the profession has changed markedly since those days with many more opportunities for people entering the veterinary field – such as job prospects in bioscience research, government work, specialisation in exotic animal medicine, animal welfare advisory work, international development work and a whole host of other career options. The landscape of the veterinary curriculum has also broadened considerably with topics like animal behaviour, ethics, business management, client communication, veterinary public health and clinical skills sitting alongside clinical veterinary medicine. Authored by a Royal Veterinary College tutor with extensive experience within the veterinary profession and with teaching new students, this book provides a thorough explanation of what prospective students can expect to study at veterinary school, and discusses career options available to new graduates, as well as a useful overview of current issues in the wider veterinary profession, and an honest and thought-provoking discussion of what veterinary life is actually like. So You Want to Be a Vet will be a useful resource and advisory guide to those considering entering veterinary school and following veterinary medicine as a career path. It will also be beneficial to qualified vets and agricultural students. 5m Books

Book excerpt: VETERINARIANS ARE DOCTORS WHO provide healthcare for animals. Like all doctors, they diagnose, treat, and research a wide variety of medical conditions using advanced procedures and sophisticated medical equipment. Their patients are often household pets, but they can also be livestock, zoo and aquarium dwellers, wildlife, or any other non-human animals. Preventing disease and healing animals that are sick or injured are at the heart of what veterinarians do. The work is varied and activities go well beyond vaccinations, sutures, setting fractured bones, and surgeries. For example, veterinarians are responsible for identifying and combating infectious diseases that can be passed from animals to humans. Their work may also involve biomedical research, education, public health policies, food safety regulations, and environmental protection. Eight out of 10 veterinarians are private practitioners, working in a one-person office or as part of a team in a clinic or hospital. These vets treat small animals, mostly pets and other companion animals. Most are generalists, providing a wide range of services from spaying and neutering to dental work and surgeries. They can also be highly-trained specialists that focus on particular medical conditions like diabetes or glaucoma, or specific functions such as orthopedic surgery or oncology. Some vets travel to farms and ranches to work with large animals while others work with exotic animals in zoos and aquariums. Still others work in national parks and other natural habitats. There are also veterinarians who do not work directly with animals. For example, they may work on public health issues in government offices or conduct research in well--equipped laboratories.Becoming a veterinarian is a lengthy process that takes at least eight years following high school graduation. To legally practice veterinary medicine, individuals are required to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited veterinary college, as well as a state license. Vets who want to become board certified specialists will need to spend a few more years working in a clinical residency. When training is complete, the prospects of a new veterinarian finding employment are excellent. The demand for qualified veterinarians has never been stronger, especially for those with specialized skills. Most vets report that their profession is quite rewarding. The pay is good with an average salary in the six figure range, and the opportunities are diverse and exciting. It can be challenging to deal with frightened animals who are sick or injured. It is sometimes equally difficult to interact with their owners who are also worried and stressed about their animals. For those with a passion for animals and great interpersonal skills, a career in veterinary medicine is an excellent career worth consideration.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the continued lack of the diversity in veterinary medicine, the least inclusive of all medical professions. Effective navigation of the complexity of diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine requires clear enumeration, recognition, and understanding of key issues, challenges, and opportunities. In a nation with rapidly changing demographics, public needs and expectations of the veterinary profession will continue to evolve. A more diverse scientific workforce is required to feed the veterinary profession, not just for the purposed of equity, but as necessity for its sustainability and relevance. The book lays out the history of diversity in the veterinary profession, in the context of historical changes and actions within US society. An overview of selected strategies from dental, pharmacy, and (human) medical schools is then offered. The impact of social constructs on career interest development is explored using the examples of race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Practical strategies for attracting preschool through undergraduate students to careers in the veterinary profession are presented, as well as metrics and tools to assess the impact of diversity and inclusiveness strategies. A systems approach to diversity and inclusiveness in the veterinary profession is called for in a manner that frames barriers as opportunities for improvement and progress. There is much that needs to happen to achieve professional inclusiveness and cultural competency, but the path to achieving this is clear. System-wide commitment, planning, execution, and continuous assessment will position the profession to better suit the population of the nation and the world that will be served. This is book is a call to action for consistent championship and cohesive approaches, and it provides a road map to building a sustainably inclusive future.
