Book Synopsis The European Tribe by : Caryl Phillips
Download or read book The European Tribe written by Caryl Phillips and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly descriptive and haunting narrative, Caryl Phillips chronicles a journey through modern-day Europe, his quest guided by a moral compass rather than a map. Seeking personal definition within the parameters of growing up black in Europe, he discovers that the natural loneliness and confusion inherent in long jorneys collides with the bigotry of the "European Tribe"-a global community of whites caught up in an unyielding, Eurocentric history. Phillips deftly illustrates the scenes and characters he encounters, from Casablanca and Costa del Sol to Venice, Amsterdam, Oslo, and Moscow. He ultimately discovers that "Europe is blinded by her past, and does not understand the high price of her churches, art galleries, and history as the prison from which Europeans speak." In the afterword to the Vintage edition, Phillips revisits the Europe he knew as a young man and offers fresh observations.

Book Synopsis Israel and Europe by : Howard M. Sachar
Download or read book Israel and Europe written by Howard M. Sachar and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A remarkable feat--clear, compelling and accessible--. Critical background for any appreciation of the Jewish state."--The New York Times Book Review With his characteristic grace and lucidity, Howard M. Sachar, renowned author of thirteen earlier books on Middle Eastern and Jewish history, brings to life the complex and dramatic story of the friendships and fallings-out between Israel and the various European powers over the last half-century. Dr. Sachar chronicles the always uneasy relationship between Israel and Great Britain; its early love-affair and nasty break-up with France; the shifting Soviet policies toward Israel; and the unlikely emergence of Germany as the new nation's chief European benefactor. A master of historical narrative, Sachar once again enlightens us with fine scholarship, insightful analysis, and an unerring knowledge of human--and national--motivations.
Book Synopsis Cordless Telecommunications in Europe by : Wally H.W. Tuttlebee
Download or read book Cordless Telecommunications in Europe written by Wally H.W. Tuttlebee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile telecommunications industry is experiencing consider able growth at present and with the increased traffic capacities which these systems provide and falling equipment prices, it is expected to continue to grow throughout the 1990s. Projections of equipment costs indicate that even portable cellular handsets could come within the reach of many customers well before the end of the century. This will transform mobile communications services from a minority, high cost application into a mainstream telecommunications service. For both market and technical reasons it is likely that the distinction between cellular, Telepoint and paging services will decrease, and the provision of common hardware in the form of a Universal Personal Communicator will become increasingly feasible. 1987 Green Paper on The European Commission's June Telecommunications included the proposal to create a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This has resulted in a major reform of the European standards-setting process with the establishment of ETSI in March 1988 in Sophia-Antipolis, Nice, France. In the field of cordless telecommunications, ETSI has charged its Technical Sub-Committee RES 3 with producing the Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard by October 1991. In the meantime, the UK CT2 Common Air Interface (CAl) has been agreed by ETSI RES in March 1990 as the basis for an Interim European Telecommuni cations Standard (I-ETS) for Telepoint applications within Europe.
