Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of a 1996 Joint Summer Research Conference sponsored by AMS-IMS-SIAM on "Quantization" held at Mount Holyoke College (Northampton, MA). The purpose of this conference was to bring together researchers focusing on various mathematical aspects of quantization. In the early work of Weyl and von Neumann at the beginning of the quantum era, the setting for this enterprise was operators on Hilbert space. This setting has been expanded, especially over the past decade, to involve C*-algebras - noncommutative differential geometry and noncommutative harmonic analysis - as well as more general algebras and infinite-dimensional manifolds. The applications now include quantum field theory, notable conformal and topological field theories related to quantization of moduli spaces, and constructive quantum field theory of supersymmetric models and condensed matter physics (the fractional quantum Hall effect in particular). The spectrum of research interests which significantly intersects the topic of quantization is unusually broad including, for example, pseudodifferential analysis, the representation theory of Lie groups and algebras (including infinite-dimensional ones), operator algebras and algebraic deformation theory. The papers in this collection originated with talks by the authors at the conference and represent a strong cross-section of the interests described above.

This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of these lecture notes is to provide an introduction to the theory of complex Monge–Ampère operators (definition, regularity issues, geometric properties of solutions, approximation) on compact Kähler manifolds (with or without boundary). These operators are of central use in several fundamental problems of complex differential geometry (Kähler–Einstein equation, uniqueness of constant scalar curvature metrics), complex analysis and dynamics. The topics covered include, the Dirichlet problem (after Bedford–Taylor), Monge–Ampère foliations and laminated currents, polynomial hulls and Perron envelopes with no analytic structure, a self-contained presentation of Krylov regularity results, a modernized proof of the Calabi–Yau theorem (after Yau and Kolodziej), an introduction to infinite dimensional riemannian geometry, geometric structures on spaces of Kähler metrics (after Mabuchi, Semmes and Donaldson), generalizations of the regularity theory of Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg–Spruck (after Guan, Chen and Blocki) and Bergman approximation of geodesics (after Phong–Sturm and Berndtsson). Each chapter can be read independently and is based on a series of lectures by R. Berman, Z. Blocki, S. Boucksom, F. Delarue, R. Dujardin, B. Kolev and A. Zeriahi, delivered to non-experts. The book is thus addressed to any mathematician with some interest in one of the following fields, complex differential geometry, complex analysis, complex dynamics, fully non-linear PDE's and stochastic analysis.

It opens perspectives on several active areas of research in complex, Kähler and symplectic geometry. A large number of applications are also included, such as an analytic proof of Kodaira's embedding theorem, a solution of the Grauert-Riemenschneider and Shiffman conjectures, compactification of complete Kähler manifolds of pinched negative curvature, Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, weak Lefschetz theorems, and asymptotics of the Ray-Singer analytic torsion.

Book excerpt: The first Summer School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Cuernavaca) offered graduate and advanced undergraduate students courses on modern topics in the overlap between analysis and physics. This volume contains the expanded notes from the lectures by Brian Hall, Alejandro Uribe, and David Borthwick. The articles introduce readers to mathematical methods of classical and quantum mechanics and the link between these two theories: quantization and semiclassical analysis. Hall writes about holomorphic methods in analysis and mathematical physics and includes exercises. Uribe's lectures covered trace formulae, in particular asymptotic behavior and the relationship between the asymptotics and the geometric properties of the classical system. Borthwick presents an introduction to Kähler quantization, including the moment map, the orbit method, and symmetry and reduction. The exposition in the entire volume is geared to introducing graduate students with a basic knowledge of mathematics into areas of active research. This volume is a joint publication of the American Mathematical Society and the Sociedad Matematica Mexicana. Members of the SMM may order directly from the AMS at the AMS member price.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes constitute the Proceedings of the `Conférence Moshé Flato, 1999'. Their spectrum is wide but the various areas covered are, in fact, strongly interwoven by a common denominator, the unique personality and creativity of the scientist in whose honor the Conference was held, and the far-reaching vision that underlies his scientific activity. With these two volumes, the reader will be able to take stock of the present state of the art in a number of subjects at the frontier of current research in mathematics, mathematical physics, and physics. Volume I is prefaced by reminiscences of and tributes to Flato's life and work. It also includes a section on the applications of sciences to insurance and finance, an area which was of interest to Flato before it became fashionable. The bulk of both volumes is on physical mathematics, where the reader will find these ingredients in various combinations, fundamental mathematical developments based on them, and challenging interpretations of physical phenomena. Audience: These volumes will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in a variety of domains, ranging from abstract mathematics to theoretical physics and other applications. Some parts will be accessible to proficient undergraduate students, and even to persons with a minimum of scientific knowledge but enough curiosity.

Book excerpt: This is a unique 21st-century monograph that reveals a basic, yet deep understanding of the universe, as well as the human mind and body ?? all from the perspective of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. This book starts with both non-mathematical and mathematical preliminaries. It presents the basics of both non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics, and introduces Feynman path integrals and their application to quantum fields and string theory, as well as some non-quantum applications. It then describes the quantum universe in the form of loop quantum gravity and quantum cosmology. Lastly, the book turns to the human body and mind, applying quantum theory to electro-muscular stimulation and consciousness. It can be used as a graduate (or advanced undergraduate) textbook for a two-semester course in quantum physics and its modern applications. Some parts of the book can also be used by engineers, biologists, psychologists and computer scientists, as well as applied mathematicians, both in industry and academia.

Book excerpt: This volume contains twenty-one solicited articles by speakers at the IWOTA 2009 workshop, ranging from expository surveys to original research papers, each carefully refereed. The contributions reflect recent developments in operator theory and its applications. Consistent with the topics of recent IWOTA meetings, IWOTA 2009 was designed as a comprehensive, inclusive conference covering all aspects of theoretical and applied operator theory, ranging from classical analysis, differential and integral equations, complex and harmonic analysis to mathematical physics, mathematical systems and control theory, signal processing and numerical analysis. The conference brought together international experts for a week-long stay at Hotel Real de Minas, in an atmosphere conducive to fruitful professional interactions. These Proceedings reflect the high quality of the papers presented at the conference.
