Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Shirley Plessner, which was first published in 1956, was compiled in response to numerous requests for informative material about the symbols, terms, and stories of the Order of Eastern Star. The Order of the Eastern Star is a Masonic appendant body open to both men and women. It was established in 1850 by lawyer and educator Rob Morris, a noted Freemason, but was only adopted and approved as an appendant body of the Masonic Fraternity in 1873. The order is based on teachings from the Bible, but is open to people of all religious beliefs. It has approximately 10,000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately 500,000 members under its General Grand Chapter. “This book contains a complete discussion of the whole biblical account from which the teachings of the Order of Eastern Star are derived. Like all such interpretations, no effort is made to establish it as the one and only interpretation. Each discussion is a collection of ideas which are designed to assist the reader in forming his own conclusions concerning each selection. This book also contains the Bible passages from which our symbols, emblems, terms and stories have been taken. All of the information in this book has been alphabetically arranged to make this information readily accessible. “Use this book to find the answers to your questions about the symbols, emblems, terms, and legends associated with the work of our Order.”

Download or read book A Place in the Lodge written by Nancy Stearns Theiss and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have an interest in Freemasonry, you may have heard of Rob Morris or have seen his name on various documents, books, poems, and songs from the mid- 1800s but don’t know much about him. A Place in the Lodge sets forth new facts about his early life and relationships and presents a slice of his life via previously unpublished family letters, sent while he was on the road. It was a time of yellow fever, Civil War, and manual farmwork, and the detail in the letters and the old photographs here make the era almost tangible. Visit this not-so-distant past and see how Morris helped Masonry evolve from its origins to take part in the United States’ women’s movement and become one of the world’s largest fraternal organizations. As he worked to standardize Freemasonry and establish the Order of the Eastern Star, his efforts were not without controversy.

Book Synopsis Order of the Eastern Star by : F. A. Bell
Download or read book Order of the Eastern Star written by F. A. Bell and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spirit of modernity now pervades even our Ancient Mysteries, so that they must bear the stamp of recent investigation. Too little has been written about the splendid Order of the Eastern Star. It is almost impossible to find any printed article bearing on its history, which may be used in making an address on the subject. In this little book will be found a concise account of the development of the Order through the ages, from the early Mysteries to the present time. An explanation of the purposes of the Order is also included, elucidating the high aims and principles which are responsible for its unprecedented success. The chapter on Parliamentary Rules of Procedure is also an innovation. It is very difficult to glean the needed facts from the mass of material presented in separate books on Parliamentary Law. In this book is given the information necessary to conduct the business of a Chapter of the Order, and it should prove a welcome addition to the Ritual. The Ritual itself must remain the same in content: the ceremonies permitting change bear certain improvements in keeping with the trend of the times. It is believed that a work as noble as that of the Order of the Eastern Star cannot he hindered by the publication of its ceremonies and methods, but that it will rather be furthered by publicity, which is the keynote of this age of Radio and Roentgen Rays. Therefore in a spirit of reverent appreciation is offered this new and modern Manual of an Order rich in tradition.

Book Synopsis Ghost Train to the Eastern Star by : Paul Theroux
Download or read book Ghost Train to the Eastern Star written by Paul Theroux and published by Emblem Editions. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Bestseller In Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Theroux recreates an epic journey he took thirty years ago, a giant loop by train (mostly) through Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, China, Japan, and Siberia. In short, he traverses all of Asia top to bottom, and end to end. In the three decades since he first travelled this route, Asia has undergone phenomenal change. The Soviet Union has collapsed, China has risen, India booms, Burma slowly smothers, and Vietnam prospers despite the havoc unleashed upon it the last time Theroux passed through. He witnesses all this and more in a 25,000 mile journey, travelling as the locals do, by train, car, bus, and foot. His odyssey takes him from Eastern Europe, still hungover from Communism, through tense but thriving Turkey, into the Caucasus, where Georgia limps back toward feudalism while its neighbour Azerbaijan revels in oil-driven capitalism. As he penetrates deeper into Asia’s heart, his encounters take on an otherworldly cast. The two chapters that follow show us Turkmenistan, a profoundly isolated society at the mercy of an almost comically egotistical dictator, and Uzbekistan, a ruthless authoritarian state. From there, he retraces his steps through India, Mayanmar, China, and Japan, providing his penetrating observations on the changes these countries have undergone. Brilliant, caustic, and totally addictive, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star is Theroux at his very best.
