Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Latin American Christianity is too often appended to the end of larger narratives and is rarely given the full consideration it deserves. And yet, the rich stories of Christianity in Latin America deserve our full attention. With this brief, engaging, and helpful overview, Joel M. Cruz offers a resource that tells that story in a new way, enabling students of all kinds to better understand the histories of Latin American Christianity. Cruz’s text is divided into two parts. The first explores the history of the region in all of its diversity and variation. The second explores the theology of Latin America by way of three essential issues faced by the encounter of European Christianity with native peoples and African slaves: anthropology, ecclesiology, and soteriology. The result is an informative and eye-opening introduction to a kaleidoscope of efforts to articulate the meanings and implications of Christianity in the context of Latin America.

This book was released on 1931 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series contains the typed minutes of the Commission on Mexican Missions (CMM), originally the Board on Mexican Missions. Meetings were held in various churches of San Antonio, San Juan, and other locations in Texas, as well as periodically in Mexico. Some meetings were held during the Texas District annual conventions. Earlier Mexican Mission minutes can be found with the Joint Synod of Ohio records. Also included are Executive Committee meeting minutes and Texas District Committee on Appeals (1932). Occasional people present, aside from the board members, included the ALC president, the Texas District president, and workers in the Mexican missions. The format of the minutes changes over time. Initially the minutes were quite detailed, with a narrative feel. Agendas first appear in the mid-1940s. By the 1950s a more standard approach to minutes, with agenda and outlined points, was adopted. The minutes include reports of the schools and churches supported by the missions, giving membership, baptism, and confirmation statistics. Financial reports, inspections. By the 1950s copies of the reports given to the board are present, not merely report summaries contained within the minutes themselves. Topics covered in the minutes include improving mission-supported schools by increasing textbooks; disciplining errant pastors; building churches, parsonages, and schools; receiving support from the ALC Women's Missionary Federation; changes in board membership; supporting theology students who would then enter the mission field; expansion into Mexico and Latin America; Lutheran Bible School; medical mission programs; publishing efforts; and Iglesia Luterana Mexicana.

The Gossner (Berlin II.) Missionary Society in India. "Thou old Adam in me die!" "Live Lord Jesus!" The Gossner Society, though not strictly Lutheran, has a great many Lutherans in its service. Pastor Gossner organized the Society in order to train missionaries for different missions. The founder withdrew from the Berlin Society because his plain habits and practical spirit did not approve of the extensive educational methods, the commodious quarters for the students and the society. He held that missionaries ought to support themselves by industrial work. With these objects in view, he in 1836 undertook the instruction of young men, and by 1837 he had seven married and four single missionaries prepared to labor in the foreign field at their own expense. The first missionaries proceeded to South Australia, under the direction of Dr. Lang, a Scotch minister. The Scotch Church on the island promised to make up the deficiency in case the missionaries could not provide for their whole support. An effort to plant a Christian colony at Calcutta proved a failure. A second colony followed. While in that great city, uncertain which way to turn, the missionaries noticed men of a peculiar type among the coolies. Upon inquiry, they learned that they were Kols from Bengal. The missionaries, who had been sent to India with the impressive instructions of Gossner, --" Believe, hope, love, pray, burn, waken the dead! Hold fast by prayer! Wrestle like Jacob! Up, up, my brethren! The Lord is coming and to every one He will say, where hast thou left the souls of these heathen? With the devil? Oh, swiftly seek these souls, and enter not without them into the presence of the Lord; "--determined to labor among the long neglected Kols. They reached...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American Christianity is too often presented as a unified story appended to the end of larger western narratives. And yet the stories of Christianity in Latin America are as varied and diverse as the lands and the peoples who live there. The unique political, ecclesial, social, and historical realities of each nation inevitably shaped a variety of Christian expressions in each. Now, for the first time, a resource exists to help students and scholars understand the histories of Latin American Christianity. An ideal resource, this handbook is designed as an accompaniment to reading and research in the field. After a generous overview to the history and theology of the region, the text moves nation-by-nation, providing timelines, outlines, and substantial introductions to the politics, people, movements, and relevant facts of Christianity as experienced in that nation. The result is an informative and eye-opening introduction to a kaleidoscope of efforts to articulate the meanings and implications of Christianity in the context of Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mission is nothing but the one church of God in motion.” With these words the famous German Lutheran theologian Wilhelm Loehe described the essence of missionary work. Mission moves the church and crosses boundaries to form the one universal church. In 1842, Loehe started missionary work in the small Bavarian town of Neuendettelsau in southern Germany, as he sent two young men as “emergency helpers” to North America. He supported the formation of Lutheran congregations that later joined together to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). Together with Friedrich Bauer he founded a mission seminary that sent, until 1985, nearly 900 graduates as pastors and missionaries not only to the USA, but also to Australia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Palestine. From this the present center Mission One World of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria developed, which maintains partnership relations to churches in Africa, Asia/Pacific, and Latin America. This book describes the history of this missionary movement up to the present time and puts the Bavarian missionary work into the context of mission theology and strategies in the twentieth century.
