Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from an ethnographic appraisal of the place of religious practices, and thereby returning to an approach more recently neglected, this book offers a detailed understanding of English everyday life. Three contemporary case studies - the life of a country church, an annual procession by the churches in a Bristol suburb, a range of linked "spiritualist" beliefs - disclose the complex patterns and compulsion of ordinary lives, including both moral and historical dimensions: the distribution of reputation and conflict, and the continuities of place and identity. At the same time, the approach revises previous accounts of English social life by giving a nuanced description of the construction of local lives in interaction with their wider setting. It demonstrates the creation of local particularity under an outside gaze, showing how actors create and cope with the forces of "modernity." In addition to the original ethnographic descriptions, the book also contributes to the history and theory of the study of complex societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that covenant theology is profoundly influential in John Wesley's theological thought seems dissonant. What would an evangelical Arminian have to do with a theological framework that historically belongs to a reformed understanding of salvation? How could this possibly square with his ongoing conflicts with the Calvinism of his day? On the basis of compelling evidence from his sermons and correspondence, this investigation dares to explore the idea that covenant theology is part of the infrastructure of Wesley's thought. The discovery of its role in shaping his narrative of the way of salvation is surprising and intriguing. Wesley is not only informed of and fluent in covenant theology, but also thoroughly committed to it. 'From Faith to Faith' demonstrates that, with theological precision and discernment, Wesley appropriates covenant theology in a way consistent with both its primary theological features and his Arminianism. His distinctive view of 'the gradual process of the work of God in thesoul' supplies valuable grist for further reflection, especially by those charged with the care of souls in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Arthur Roberts was a schoolmaster in country NSW (1861 to 1894) and it was education and the changing educational system that shaped his life. Born in the hop-growing region of Kent, England, his life and prospects were transformed by a wave of educational reform that carried him far from family, class and country. Roberts found himself on the frontier of attempts to establish a national school system in Australia. With a swiftly growing family - one with a severe disability - he was moved from one struggling district to another, fighting insolvency, ignorance, natural disaster and bitter sectarian divides. His letters requesting schoolroom furniture, upgrades to buildings and teaching assistants give some insight into his plight. Photographs and family folklore reveal a taciturn, deeply flawed man while the evidence of writings (as Scone correspondent for The Maitland Mercury) suggests a fiery intelligence and defiant pride. This is amplified by a portrait of Roberts in Havelock Ellis' autobiographical novel, Kanga Creek. The schoolmaster, Mr Williams, is portrayed as an educated and passionate agnostic who uses the pen name Anti-Humbug when writing letters to The Stockwhip, a journal possibly modeled on publications like The Bulletin. This narrative presents these contradictions and hopefully gives the reader some sense of this teacher's journey.
