Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of German Literature IN writing this volume, it was my task to compress more than a thousand years of literary history into a volume of about four hundred pages. The book was not to be a collection of sheaths garnered here and there in favourite fields, but a real history, dealing with the whole subject coherently and with due regard to the relative importance of periods, writers, and writings. As it was evident that I should be obliged to omit freely and boldly, I decided, first of all, to omit the scholars, philosophers, and men of science, that is, to confine myself pretty closely to literature in the restricted English sense of the word. The broader conception of literature is no doubt the more philosophic, but it is less convenient for a writer who must economise space at every step. The German genius has done much of its best work in scholarship, philosophy, and science, but I was not writing a history of the German genius. The first chapter traces the roots of German nationality back to the period preceding the Aryan separation, and presents a picture of the intellectual condition of our forefathers at the time when they became known to the Romans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of German Literature If we turn back two hundred years, we find the reading men of England, if they have time to go beyond their own authors, giving their attention, among moderns, to the Italians and Spanish. As yet in Europe only Italy and Spain, besides England, had seen the rise of literatures of sufficient moment to influence the cultivated world beyond the national limits. Dante, Petrarch, Boceaceio, Ariosto, Tasso, Machiavelli had lived, and these are still the greatest Italian names. In Spain, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Calderon had done their work, - work which no succeeding writers of that land have equalled. If we go back one hundred years, the literature of France has taken the place in the estimation of the English once held by the writers of Spain and Italy; the brilliant men of the age of Louis XIV have laid the world under their spell. In our time, again, the influence of France has been, to a large extent, supplanted. Following especially the lead of two of the most gifted Englishmen of the century, Coleridge and Carlyle, the present generation turns with most reverence to the Germans, often regarding their literature as the most important in the world, after our own, if, indeed, we are to make that exception. It will scarcely be questioned that some knowledge of the history of German literature is, to English-speaking persons, an essential part of thorough culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of German Literature: Based on the German Work of Vilmar The work on which the following pages are based has reached a sixth edition within a short period of time, and enjoys a high reputation in Germany. That portion which treats of the Heroic Sagas is considered superior to anything that has been written on the subject. Its author, Vilmar, held an office in the Department of Public Worship and Education, under the notorious Hessian minister, Hassenpflug. According to the German papers, he belongs to that party in Germany which stands up for the national Lutheranism as opposed to the foreign Calvinism. These views, which Vilmar advocated with great vigour, excited odium in some quarters; and on the disgrace and downfall of Hassenpflug, Vilmar's retirement was greeted with loud jubilee by the democrats, who stigmatised him as a tyrant and represser of national liberty. Since then, he has been Professor of Theology at Marburg. In many respects, Vilmar's work (which, it is only fair to say, exhibits no leaning towards despotism, civil or ecclesiastical) surpasses those of his predecessors on the same subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. As the selections were made, for the most part, while I was writing my own short history of German literature for the series published under the general editorship of Mr. Edmund Gosse and known as Literatures of the World, it was natural that the Anthology should take on, to some extent, the charac ter of a companion book to the History. At the same time I did not desire that either book should necessari involve the use of the other. Hence the absence of cross references; and hence also, in the Ah thology, the brief introductory notes, giving important dates and sum mary characterizations. These are meant to enable the student to read the selections intelligently without constant recourse to some other book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of German Literature The plan in preparing this work has been to produce an elementary work for those who desire to inform themselves in regard to the great men and the important works of German literature. I have endeavored briefly to show how important epochs have developed, to furnish short biographies of the leaders connected with these epochs, and to present concise outlines of their important works. For the convenience of those unfamiliar with German, I have endeavored to reproduce a large number of titles in English. A large portion of the book, printed eight years ago, and since used as a text-book in eight consecutive college classes, has demonstrated its usefulness in my own work; and in the hope that it may do similar service for others, I have revised and completed it. While numerous and various authorities have constantly been consulted, I wish to acknowledge indebtedness to Scherer's Geschichte der deutschen Litteratur, and more especially to Konig's Deutsche Litteraturgeschichte and his Abriss der deutschen Litteraturgeschichte, upon which much of the work is based, and from which a portion of the illustrations have been reproduced. Only illustrations of an authentic or historical nature have been admitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Influence of German Literature in America It is in the nature of things impossible to draw a sharp boundary line between different phases of literary development. It has been deemed advisable, however, to confine these observa tions to a period including and antedating the first quarter of our century. This is a period upon which the historian looks with somewhat unj ustifiable soreness of heart it is the time of plentiful American reprints of the issues of the English press, with but few original contributions of any value. The mournful complaint of the American author of the time about want of encouragement dins in our ears on turning over the pages of long-forgotten American reviews. It was hard for him to realize, or, when realized, to acquiesce in the fact that it was impossible for him to compete with the accepted classics of English literature and the new developments of the end of the last and beginning of the new century. A literary movement, however, cannot be made to order, and we do well to derive some satisfaction from the fact that the American public, with much trash, read much that was valuable, even though not a native product. The work has not been overburdened with accounts of unimportant writers, or lengthy quo tations from the German. English versions have been consistently avoided, the Author feeling convinced that their insertion in a work of this kind is out of place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of German Literature This little volume aims at nothing more ambitious than to give an outline of the growth of German literature; but while it may serve as an introduction to a more in timate acquaintance with the subject, the author hopes that readers who, without the leisure to pursue the study in larger works, may wish to know something of the men and women whose genius has illuminated the intellectual progress of Germany, may find this Primer sufficiently comprehensive to satisfy that desire. The author is gratified to learn from her publishers that a sixth edition of this Primer has been called for, and has sought, by a thorough revision, to make it worthy of continued approval for the object for which it was prepared.
