Book Synopsis A History of the Small Arms Made by the Sterling Armament Company by : Peter Laidler
Download or read book A History of the Small Arms Made by the Sterling Armament Company written by Peter Laidler and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth history of the small arms made by the Sterling Company of Dagenham, Essex, England, from 1940 until the company closed in 1989. The Lanchester and the Patchett Machine Carbines were both developed at Sterling Engineering Co Ltd during World War II. With the appearance of the earliest Patchett prototypes the military began testing them in ever more rigorous trials, wherein the Patchett kept proving its merits. This led to limited UK adoption of the MkII Patchett as the L2A1 in 1953, and the “first Sterling,” the MkII, as the L2A2 in 1955. Then came Sterling’s “Crown Jewel,” the superb Mk4, adopted as the general-issue UK “Gun, Sub-Machine, L2A3” in September, 1955. Manufactured briefly but intensively by ROF Fazakerley (1955–1959) and by Sterling for over 30 years, nearly 4,000,000 were made. Unlike wraparound bolt designs like the UZI, the Sterling was capable of being truly silenced with standard 9mm ball ammunition (as opposed to being merely “suppressed”). The excellent silenced Sterling-Patchett Mk5, adopted as the UK L34A1 in 1967, is the only Sterling remaining in British Service. All prototypes, military Marks, commercial and licensed production models of the Sterling are described, including the Canadian C1 SMG and the Indian 1A Carbine. Contains notes on manufacturing methods and procedures as used at Sterling, ROF Fazakerley, Canadian Arsenals Limited and the Indian Small Arms Factory, Kanpur (Cawnpore), plus extensive notes on inter-model interchangeability, serial number ranges, quantities produced, client-country purchases of the various Sterling Marks, and accessories. Praise for A History of the Small Arms made by the Sterling Armament Company “If you have an interest in small arms then this is a book that belongs in your library or book shelf. The book does a great job of providing the reader with the story of the weapons that evolved into the Sterling sub-machine gun and the changes in design that took place over that history. The result was a weapon that served in many fields of conflict and performed admirably.” —Armorama

Download or read book HMS Defiance written by Keith Hall and published by History Press (SC). This book was released on 2008 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe, covers 650 acres and has fifteen dry docks. There are 4 miles of waterfront, twenty-five tidal berths and five basins. Plymouth has had a naval base since 1691 and today Devonport is the base port of the largest ship in the Royal Navy (HMS Ocean) and also the smallest vessel, HMS Gleaner, a 25-ton surveying motor launch. Devonport is also home to fourteen Type 22 and Type 23 frigates, seven Trafalgar-class submarines and four of the five hydrographic ships which form the Royal Naval Surveying squadron. Alongside its surface ship refitting facilities, Devonport is the only site in the UK equipped to conduct nuclear submarine refits, including those for the Vanguard class. Keith Hall has brought together a fascinating selection of images of the base over its lifetime and illuminated them with commentary on the history of Devonport and its relationship with Plymouth. Keith has served in the Royal Navy and has sailed aboard the Trident and Polaris fleet.
Book Synopsis History of Urban Form Before the Industrial Revolution by : A.E.J. Morris
Download or read book History of Urban Form Before the Industrial Revolution written by A.E.J. Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an international history of urban development, from its origins to the industrial revolution. This well established book maintains the high standard of information found in the previous two editions, describing the physical results of some 5000 years of urban activity. It explains and develops the concept of 'unplanned' cities that grow organically, in contrast with 'planned' cities that were shaped in response to urban form determinants. Spread throughout the texts are copious illustrations from a wealth of sources, including cartographic urban records, aerial and other photographs, original drawings and the author's numerous analytical line drawings.
Book Synopsis Where the Wildgeese Roam: a Coyne Family History by : Steve Coyne
Download or read book Where the Wildgeese Roam: a Coyne Family History written by Steve Coyne and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish family history is not easy to pursue. This book took the author many years researching the journey of his family from County Roscommon at the time of the Great Famine in the 1840s. They settled in Lancashire, became part of the Irish in Britain, while working as plasterers, house painters, and cotton weavers. We discover where they lived, how much they earnt, and how much rent they paid. As they assimilated into British society in the last century family members contributed in both world wars. In the Second World War we follow the fortunes of three cousins in each of the three services. The family name - O'Cadhain in Irish - translates as 'wildgoose'. Their roaming continued after 1945 with further migrations to Canada. As we discover from what happened to this one family of famine migrants there are plenty of surprises along the way.
