Book excerpt: Discover the remarkable life of Giotto di Bondone...The name Giotto di Bondone may not be as well-known as Leonardo da Vinci, but it was Giotto who made da Vinci and his contemporaries of the Renaissance possible. Giotto, born in the late thirteenth century, was the first painter to escape the artistic chains of the Dark Ages and revive the natural art of Ancient Greece. Instead of creating flat, expressionless figures, as was the custom of the Middle Ages, Giotto painted characters with personalities and emotions. Since almost all art of that time was commissioned by the Church, Giotto spent his life painting magnificent frescos for churches and chapels. He became the most famous painter of his time and opened the artistic doors to the splendid Renaissance to come. Book Synopsis The Realism of Piero della Francesca by : Joost Keizer
Download or read book The Realism of Piero della Francesca written by Joost Keizer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth-century Italian artist Piero della Francesca painted a familiar world. Roads wind through hilly landscapes, run past farms, sheds, barns, and villages. This is the world in which Piero lived. At the same time, Piero’s paintings depict a world that is distant. The subjects of his pictures are often Christian and that means that their setting is the Holy Land, a place Piero had never visited. The Realism of Piero della Francesca studies this paradoxical aspect of Piero’s art. It tells the story of an artist who could think of the local churches, palaces, and landscapes in and around his hometown of Sansepolcro as miraculously built replicas of the monuments of Jerusalem. Piero’s application of perspective, to which he devoted a long treatise, was meant to convince his contemporaries that his paintings report on things that Piero actually observed. Piero’s methodical way of painting seems to have offered no room for his own fantasy. His art looks deliberately styleless. This book uncovers a world in which painting needed to validate itself by cultivating the illusion that it reported on things observed instead of things imagined by the artist. Piero’s painting claimed truth in a world of increasing uncertainties.
Book Synopsis A Documentary History of Art, Volume 1 by : Elizabeth Gilmore Holt
Download or read book A Documentary History of Art, Volume 1 written by Elizabeth Gilmore Holt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating one-volume compendium of primary documents on the art of medieval and Renaissance Europe This unique collection brings together notebooks, letters, treatises, and contracts dealing with the art of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, providing extraordinary insights into the personalities and conditions of the times and revealing the stylistic and philosophical concerns that evolved during these intensively creative eras. These documents, many of them available here in English for the first time, range from Raoul Glaber’s famous 1003 treatise on the synthesis of old and new art forms to Durand’s essay on Christian symbolism in art and the writings of Leonardo and Dürer on anatomy, perspective, and the recreation of reality. They trace how a medieval conception of life that was inspired, oriented, and dominated by the church evolved gradually into the great reawakening of the Renaissance in which humankind itself assumed primary importance in Western art.
