Book excerpt: A Blanding's Turtle ventures across streams, over roads, and through wetlands to find food and a safe place to make a nest, in the third board book in Wildlife on the Move series. "A Blanding's Turtle Story" follows one turtle through her seasonal cycle of hibernating, foraging, and nesting, with some unexpected challenges--and help--along the way.Through a simple narrative with beautiful illustrations, young readers will learn about the Blanding's Turtle, behaviors and habitat, threats to its survival, and respectful human interaction to help conserve this rare endangered species. This is the third in a four-part series of board books done in partnership with Maine Audubon. All four are narrative nonfiction books about different New England species. This unique series is written and designed specifically for a preschool market; few board books exist that tell conservation stories for this age range. Previous titles include "A Snowy Owl Story" and "A Little Brown Bat Story."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a familiar backyard visitor in many parts of the United States and Mexico, the box turtle is losing the battle against extinction. In North American Box Turtles, C. Kenneth Dodd, Jr., has written the first book-length natural history of the twelve species and subspecies of this endangered animal. This volume includes comprehensive information on the species’ evolution, behavior, courtship and reproduction, habitat use, diet, population structure, systematics, and disease. Special features include color photos of all species, subspecies, and their habitats; a simple identification guide to both living and fossil species; and a summary of information on fossil Terrapene and Native uses of box turtles. End-of-chapter sections highlight future research directions, including the need for long-term monitoring and observation of box turtles within their natural habitat and conservation applications. A glossary and a bibliography of literature on box turtles accompany the text. All royalties from the sales of this volume will go to the Chelonian Research Foundation, a nonprofit foundation for the conservation of turtles.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports a study conducted to: document the movement patterns of young Blandings turtles (Emydoidea blandingii); and identify areas used by young turtles as rearing grounds and hibernation sites. The study area was located in a park in south-western Nova Scotia. The turtles were hand-reared to an age when they could be fitted with radio transmitters and were then released at four sites, three located on small brooks and the fourth at a small pond. All release sites had boggy floodplain areas dominated by shrubs, grasses, and sphagnum moss. Tagged turtles were tracked daily for the first few days after release to determine whether they would move significantly after release. When determined they would not move significantly, they were positioned by telemetry every 3-7 days and recaptured every 3-14 days. Recaptured turtles were measured and examined to determine their condition. Results are presented and discussed related to turtle survival, movement, predation, behaviour, and habitat use.

Book excerpt: Nine-year-old Harriet resides with her father on a fishing boat, situated off the lush and tropical shores of Australia, in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Growing up at sea, Harriet is as comfortable in water as she is on land, and spends her time exploring the vast reef systems teeming with exotic plants and animals. All is well in the land of lavender corals and tangerine sunsets until an oil spill destroys all that Harriet has come to love. Blackness covers the once pristine beaches, as fish, sea birds, and turtles sicken in the thick grease. Harriet witnesses the devastating effects on wildlife and is inconsolable. Determined to save her home, Harriet departs on a thrilling underwater adventure that is both empowering and touching. Harriet manages to save the day in her own very special and innocent way.
