Book excerpt: One of the most eccentric and accomplished politicians in all of American history, John Randolph (1773–1833) led a life marked by controversy. The long-serving Virginia congressman and architect of southern conservatism grabbed headlines with his prescient comments, public brawls, and clashes with every president from John Adams to Andrew Jackson. The first biography of Randolph in nearly a century, John Randolph of Roanoke provides a full account of the powerful Virginia planter's hard-charging life and his impact on the formation of conservative politics. The Randolph lineage loomed large in early America, and Randolph of Roanoke emerged as one of the most visible—and certainly the most bombastic—among his clan. A colorful orator with aristocratic manners, he entertained the House of Representatives (and newspaper readers across the country) with three-hour-long speeches on subjects of political import, drawing from classical references for his analogies, and famously pausing to gain "courage" from a tumbler at his side. Adept at satire and uncensored in his verbal attacks against colleagues, he invited challenges to duel from those he offended; in 1826, he and the then-secretary of state Henry Clay exchanged gunfire on the banks of the Potomac. A small-government Jeffersonian in political tastes, Randolph first entered Congress in 1799. As chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee he memorably turned on President Jefferson, once and for all, in 1805, believing his fellow Virginian to have compromised his republican values. As a result, Randolph led the "Old Republicans," a faction that sought to restrict the role of the federal government. In this rich biography, David Johnson draws upon an impressive array of primary sources—Randolph's letters, speeches, and writings—previously unavailable to scholars. John Randolph of Roanoke tells the story of a young nation and the unique philosophy of a southern lawmaker who defended America's agrarian tradition and reveled in his own controversy.

Book excerpt: A new edition of Adams' 1882 biography of John Randolph of Roanoke (1773-1833), a particularly acerbic critic of the politics of his time, who turned against every US president from John Adams to Andre Jackson, coined the term Hawks for proponents of war, and for his vicious verbal attacks was challenged to a duel by the easygoing Henry Clay. Editor Robert McColley (history, U. of Illinois) provides notes to explain contemporary references and excerpts from three of Randolph's speeches and letters. No index or bibliography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Randolph of Roanoke, 1773-1833: A Biography Based Largely on New Material The biography (so-called) of Randolph by Lemuel Sawyer is but a mere memoir; though by no means negligible, because Sawyer served for many years in the House of Representatives with Randolph, and, while sharing the prejudice against him, felt by all the fervid Jeffersonians, after the breach between him and Jefferson, was an ardent but not an indiscriminate admirer of Randolph's genius; and was an admirer, in many respects, of his character too. But, even if Sawyer's book were a much more extensive one, he had a failing which is enough to destroy, or all but destroy, the value of any book, brief or otherwise; that is, gross inaccuracy. He was, we are told by John Quincy Adams, a writer of poems and plays, as well as a Congressman, and no playwright or poet ever deliberately took more license with historical facts than Sawyer did in the loose statements of his memoir. The Reminiscences of the Home Life of John Randolph of Roanoke by Powhatan Bouldin contains much contemporary testimony about Randolph of the highest importance, but, as its title indicates, its scope is limited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biography of John Randolph, of Roanoke: With a Selection From His Speeches We are forced to pause a moment at the commencement of this work, to express our wonder and astonishment that no regular biography of John Randolph has yet made its appearance. We should have supposed that some of his many gifted relatives would have felt it a sacred duty to have taken the lead, in transmitting to future ages, in an imperishable memoir, the great founder of their name and fortunes. So lofty a theme is well calculated to rouse the ambition of the higher order of native talent, and to insure a rich harvest of laurels and wealth to the successful adventurer in this unoccupied field of literature. He has long passed from among us, his "sun has made a glorious set," but no one has ventured to mark "the bright track of his resplendent car." In the "Port-Folio" of 1812, is a print of Mr. Randolph from a miniature likeness, furnished at the instance of Dr. Nathaniel Chapman of Philadelphia, with a promise that it should be followed with a biographical sketch in a succeeding number. Some overtures were made to Mr. Randolph, on behalf of Dr. Chapman, through Theodore Bland Dudley, Mr. Randolph's nephew and correspondent, a student attending the medical lectures of Dr. Chapman and his brethren of the Faculty, for some materials for the projected work. Mr. Randolph, in reply, tenders his thanks to Dr. Chapman for his good intentions, but says his life, though eventful, did not afford the requisite materials. In a letter written in the November following, he directs his nephew to inform Dr. Chapman that he would give him some memories pour servir, if he had an amanuensis. In another letter, written to his nephew, of the 19th of December following, he expresses some dissatisfaction at the print given of him in the Port-Folio. "I really regret," says he, "that you lent the miniature for the purpose of having it so wretchedly engraved."
