This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, Vol. 1 IS the history of philosophy only a history of error? The history of philosophy is also a true and real philosophy. It is not, as some uninformed individuals have incorrectly supposed, a history of errors. Rightfully and manfully did Hegel refute a conception of the history of philosophy that made of it a disorderly aggregation of opinions. Profound thinkers are fully aware that the history 'of philosophy is an arduous and honorable search for truth. Not only is it an honorable search, but it is a constant one as well, possessing inner continuity. Or the truth in its entirety? But neither is it true that such a history is, as Hegel, who falls into an error at the other extreme, so boldly states, a system in evolution. It is not a presentation of the gradual and progressive self-revelation of the mind and of truth, in which everything follows so logically that we may anticipate the shape of things to come from what has gone before, just as in a textbook of geometry one proposition is developed from the preceding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical History of Philosophy, Vol. 3: From Bacon to the Present Day Some objection may, perhaps, be made to the amount of criticism mingled with the exposition. In this, though sinning against the office of His torian, I have been prompted by the one steady purpose which gives this work its unity, viz. That of showing by Argument, what History shows by Facts, - that to attempt to construct a science of Metaphysics is to attempt an impossibility. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Philosophy From Thales to Comte, Vol. 1 of 2 Although only three years have elapsed since the Third Edition of this work appeared, considerable alterations in it have been necessary, owing partly to the appearance Of new works, partly to works having newly come under my notice, and partly to modifications in my own views on certain questions. This edition is, therefore, much more than a carefully-revised form Of its forerunner. It is in many parts new; and in the old parts the Opinions are Often greatly modified. Signor Berti's researches among the Venetian Archives, for example, have caused a complete reconstruction of the biography Of Giordano Bruno. The chapters on Leibnitz, Berkeley, Kant, Fichte and Hegel may be specially mentioned among the parts that have been most changed. I had long felt that since this History had departed from the aim and scope of its early form Leibnitz and Hegel were very inadequately presented; and although the chapters now Offered are perhaps disproportionately long, they are shorter than I could have willingly made them. The length to which the chapters on Kant and Hegel extend is justified by the interest attached to these names. Excerpt: ...in a dispute with.ZEschines, who was becoming violent, he said: "Let us give over: we have quarrelled, it is true; but I, as your senior, have a right to claim the precedency in the reconciliation." In his old age he appears to have returned to Cyrene, and there opened his school. His philosophy, as Hegel remarks, takes its colour from his personality. So individual is it, that we should have passed it over entirely, had it not been a precursor of Epicureanism. Its relation to Socrates is also important. In the only passage, we believe, in which Aristotle t mentions Aristippus, he speaks of him as a Sophist. What does this mean? Was he one of the professed Sophists?--No. It means, we believe, that he shared the opinion of the Sophists Several of his repartees are recorded by Laertius. We add the best of them: --Scinus, the treasurer of Dionysius, a man of low character but immense wealth, once showed Aristippus over his house. While he was expatiating on the splendour of every part, even to the floors, the philosopher spat in his face. Scinus was furious. "Pardon me," exclaimed Aristippus, " there was no other place where I could have spat with decency." One day, in interceding with the Tyrant for a friend, he threw himself on his knees. Being reproached for such want of dignity, he answered: " Is it my fault if Dionysius has his ears in his feet?" One day he asked the Tyrant for some money. Dionysius made him own that a philosopher had no need of money. "Give, give," replied Aristippus, "and we will settle the question at once." Dionysius gave. "Now" said the philosopher, "I have no need of money." t 'Met, ' iii. c ii. respecting the uncertainty of Science....

This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 3 In accordance with the character of the different epochs, modern philosophy has to rise above the philosophical wisdom of the ancients and the theological wisdom of lthe imiddle Ages. N o theories will meet the requirements of modern times, nor deserve the name of philosophy except such as recognise both the here, or real, of antiquity, and the hereafter, or ideal, of the Middle Ages, and attempt to reconcile the two. Any system which left one of these sides out.of account, or which did not admit that there was a point where the two coincided, would cease to be philosophical.' And the differ ence between systems depends upon the different manner in which these two sides are conceived of (as extension and thought, as nature and spirit, as real and rational, and in a Special degree upon the different methods of reconciling them. In the latter lies the main feature, and, therefore, the real principle of any system of modern philosophy. In the period of transition from the Middle Ages, there appeared side by side the philosophers who forgot God, and the mystics who despised the world. They Showed where the point Was to be found from which both natural and supernatural know ledge are seen to be' subordinate and partial aspects of a whole. For the Microcosmos of the' former, and the Micro theos or, God in miniature, of bohme, is.man, whose function. Is, to introduce thoughts of God into the world, to lead it to God. When philosophy becomes know ledge of man, it. Does more than merely transcend the one-sidedness of knowledge of the' Cosmos, and. Of know ledge of God; it now for the first time corresponds to our idea of it 2 and. Henceforth the path that philosophy follows is not to reach self by starting from the world or from God, but to start from self and find one's way back to a world and to God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of the History of Philosophy, Vol. 1 of 2: Being the Work Adopted by the University of France for Instruction in the Colleges and High Schools; Translated From the French Sin broke up this primordial society. There re mained, however, some relics of it as long as rela tions of this kind were necessary to the first educa tion of humanity. Under this supernatural tuition it must have been initiated into secrets which it would not have penetrated by its own intelligence. But this higher knowledge, and the means of action corresponding to it, must, at the same time, through the abuse of which it was capable, have placed at the disposal of man an immense destructive force. The perversion of this kind of knowledge must needs give birth to crimes which our thoughts are scarcely able to represent. Download or read book A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1 written by Harald Hoffding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1: A Sketch of the History of Philosophy From the Close of the Renaissance to Our Own Day The appearance of a new representation of an important period in the History of Philosophy will naturally give rise to the ques tion as to what view of philosophy is regarded by the author as fundamental, and what is the significance, and what the value which he ascribes to its history. To which I answer that the whole aim of the studies of which the publication of this book denotes the provisional conclusion has been to shed light on the question as to what philosophy really is. As we learn to know a man from his biography, so also we must be able to learn to know a science from its history. And it is the more natural that we should adopt this path, since experience is continually showing us that, within the sphere of philosophy, contending views are advanced, each one of which claims to be valid, so that there is. No one exposition of philosophy to which we can point as developing an exhaustive conception of it. It is natural, therefore, that we should here, as within the sphere of religion, employ the comparative method. The history of philosophy treats of the attempts which have been made by individual thinkers to discuss the ultimate problems of know ledge and of life. It will be a result of no small importance, therefore, if we can show clearly what are the problems with which philosophy deals, how these problems have presented themselves at different times, and what, in each case, were the conditions which determined the different statements of the problems, and the attempts at their solution. If such a result can be approximately attained, the study of the history of philosophy will be of no small importance for the future development of philosophy itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, From the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Present Century, Vol. 1 of 2: Drawn Up From Brucker's Historia Critica Philosophiae British student, who, in his search after truth, should be de sirons of taking a general survey of the rise and progress of Opinions on the more important subjects of speculation, and by a fair comparison of difl'erent systems to draw legi timate conclusions for himself, would seek in vain for the necessary information in any English work. The only treatise, which might seem to promise him much assistance on this subject, is Stanley's History of Philosophy but, to say nothing of the uncouth and obscure style in which this work is written, he would find, upon examination, that the author's plan extended little further than to the history of the Grecian sects of philosophy; and that, in executing it, he has rather performed the oflice of an industrious com piler, than that of a judicious critic.
