Download or read book Translation and Bilingual Dictionaries written by Chan Sin-wai and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the bilingual dictionary really the translator’s best friend? Or is it the case that all translators hate all dictionaries? The truth probably lies half-way. It is difficult to verify anyway, as the literature on the subject(s) is limited, not helped by the fact that Lexicography and Translation have stood apart for decades despite their commonality of purpose. Here is a volume, based on the proceedings of a successful conference at Hong Kong, that may at last provide some answers.

Book excerpt: This root-based dictionary of the Ilocano language is the most comprehensive dictionary produced of Ilocano (Iloko), the lingua franca of Northern Luzon, and historically the native language of the majority of Filipino immigrants to the United States. The body of the dictionary includes entries for roots and affixes with illustrative sentences, idioms, common derivations, and scientific names (when applicable). Ilocano synonyms are also furnished when appropriate. Derived words that undergo morphological fusion are listed as separate entries to facilitate lexical searches. There is also an affix cross-reference list to help the beginning student recognize root words. Book Synopsis Studies in Philippine Linguistics by :
Download or read book Studies in Philippine Linguistics written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four topics covered in this volume include a pedagogical grammar of Tboli (Vivian M. Forsberg), Bantoanon phonology (Heather Kilgour and Gail Hendrickson), demonstratives in Aklanon narratives (Kristine Jensen and Rodolfo Barlaan), and behavioral discourse strategy in Eastern Bontoc (Takashi Fukuda). Tboli is a language spoken by people living in southwestern Mandanao, Philippines, in the province of South Cotabato. The pedagogical grammar of Tboli has been written to help non-Tboli speakers interested in learning to speak Tboli. In the chapter on Bantoanon phonology, discussion focuses on higher level phonology, syllable patterns, the phoneme, and residue. Topics addressed in the chapter on Aklanon narratives include the spatial relation between speaker and hearer, the discourse functions of demonstratives, syntactic pointing, and connotative or emotive functions of demonstratives. The final chapter is an analysis of behavioral texts (speech directed obligatorily to a second person in a communication situation) and a discussion of the persuasive devices employed by the speakers in an effort to effect a change in the listener's behavior. Several nonlinguistic persuasive devices are described: appeal to the cultural norm, human relationship, coaxing, and indirectness. (JP)
