Book excerpt: Abstract: Research on heterogeneous wind duo groupings is rare, even though a representative collection of repertoire exists for several pairing combinations in both chamber music and double concerti. In the case of woodwind chamber music, composers first began writing for Harmonie wind ensembles comprised of two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons and two French horns in the late 1700's. Composers, however, have largely ignored a repertoire featuring the two highest voices of this genre (oboe and the clarinet) as a duo or wind combination paired with strings and/or piano until the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Surprisingly, the instruments were used in conjunction much earlier in the eighteenth century in sinfonia concertantes, double concerti and other orchestral literature. This document will deal with often-neglected chamber works that utilize oboe and clarinet as the sole wind instruments. This repertoire includes works for: 1) oboe and clarinet, 2) oboe and clarinet with piano (including orchestral reductions as noted), 3) oboe and clarinet with one or more string instruments with and without piano, percussion, and voice, and 4) oboe and clarinet as double soloists with orchestra or wind ensemble. This last grouping, while not chamber works, will be addressed as they are closely related to the chamber music repertoire and are sometimes played as such. Compositions utilizing bass clarinet, English horn and other related family members in the aforementioned combinations will also be included. Woodwind trios, quartets, quintets, etc. will not be addressed, as the focus of this paper will be on compositions that use oboe and clarinet (and family members) as their dominant woodwind voices. In addition to listing available repertoire, the following topics will be addressed: 1) the relationship of the oboe and clarinet in the orchestral setting, 2) the growth of the repertoire for this duo combination and the musicians involved and 3) resources for researching obscure chamber music.

Book excerpt: Chamber Music: A Research and Information Guide is a reference tool for anyone interested in chamber music. It is not a history or an encyclopedia but a guide to where to find answers to questions about chamber music. The third edition adds nearly 600 new entries to cover new research since publication of the previous edition in 2002. Most of the literature is books, articles in journals and magazines, dissertations and theses, and essays or chapters in Festschriften, treatises, and biographies. In addition to the core literature obscure citations are also included when they are the only studies in a particular field. In addition to being printed, this volume is also for the first time available online. The online environment allows for information to be updated as new research is introduced. This database of information is a "live" resource, fully searchable, and with active links. Users will have unlimited access, annual revisions will be made and a limited number of pages can be downloaded for printing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times critic Harold Schonberg once commented that solo concerti for the English horn are as rare as fish with fur. Indeed, the common impression is that works composed specifically for the instrument are few and far between . However, William McMullen's thematic catalogue admirably refutes this notion, with 200 works that are originally written for a soloistic English horn; works that allow the player an opportunity to illustrate the instrument's unique expressive qualities in a solo setting. Each entry in the catalogue is divided into two main parts - one dealing with information about the composer, and the other supplying details about the work (instrumentation; date and place of composition/publication; numbers, titles and timings of movements; first performance dates; comments from the composer; and a description of any unusual technical demands upon the soloist). Thematic incipits are also included.

Book excerpt: After decades of experimentation, musicians have begun to utilize a strikingly colorful palette of sounds on woodwind instruments. Flute, clarinet, and saxophone players, in many different musical settings, regularly use sounds that were unheard of in the middle of the twentieth century. Oboists, in comparison, have lagged somewhat behind their more adventurous colleagues. In writing Oboe Unbound: Contemporary Techniques, author Libby Van Cleve opens up the tradition-bound assumptions of the instrument’s capabilities. Not only does she include descriptions of the instrument’s standard technique from range and reeds to the use of vibrato, but she also discusses recent techniques, such as multiphonics, microtones, altered timbres, and extended range, to name a few. Van Cleve bolsters this book with numerous music examples and professionally-tested fingering charts, and concludes with basic information about the use of electronics for amplification, recording, and sound enhancement. The book’s appendixes include a substantial bibliography of music and literature and a discography including jazz, non-western, and art music recordings. The revised edition incorporates new information about resources now available through the internet and marks the launch of a website that includes examples of all the contemporary sounds as well as audio and video recordings of unreleased compositions.
