You may have read about people who have managed to get through and survive disaster and catastrophes, which are potentially life-threatening. On the other hand, there have been people who went through extensive survival training, and still could not manage to use their particular skills effectively and beneficiary in order to survive. So, even though the latter had the requisite knowledge and skills, what made them fail, when other lesser trained people succeeded? That is the will to survive. I know about an Army officer who brought his group of seven men through an enemy ridden territory after 31 days of harrowing mental, physical and psychological trauma. It was not his army training, which brought him and his responsibility back to base safely. It was also not their knowledge, about how to get food, save themselves from the enemy, make fire, make or take shelter in the best place available, and other factors which could make all the difference between life and death.

That was a little step for her, but it was a giant step for mankind. Soon people began to preserve food in stoneware jars. The principle of preserving these fruit/food items depended firstly upon the destruction by need of all the mold and bacteria in the air, fruit, or water. As technological development and experimental sciences began to develop in ancient civilizations, they discovered how to make glass containers and bottles more than 5000 years ago. Naturally, at the same time, the cook in the kitchen was experimenting on food stuffs. It was only by trial and error that she learned that if she kept items of food in a moist atmosphere, it would soon grow moldy and perish real fast. Also, she learned that the exclusion of air during the sealing off the bottles prevented this mold from growing on the surface of the food. Along with that, she found out that salt, vinegar, wine and oil were extremely useful mediums in which she could preserve food, and that is how the art of been a preserving food in the shape of jams, jellies, pickles and chutneys came into existence. So this art has come down to us through the ages, and that is why many families have closely guarded secret recipes for pickling or preserving food. And that is when our grannies told us in grave tones – “remember, children, the containers in which you put this jam should be totally sealed really properly. That is how you are going to keep it for a long time.” Natural vinegar and natural oil was used as an important medium since ancient times to preserve fruit, pickles and other natural food items. Along with that, salt and sugar were used as preservatives.

Winter was the time when they could not go out and hunt. So was the rainy season, especially they were living in rain forests and tropical areas. So if they found out some way in which they could preserve food, on which they and their tribe members could survive, this would make all the difference between life and death. And so through a lot of experimentation, the ideas of pickles, chutneys, jams, jellies, preserves, conserves, spiced fruit and other ways of preserving food, as well as fruit and vegetables came into existence. Today, millenniums later, there is absolutely no fruit and vegetable, which has not been turned into a pickle, chutney, jam, jelly or conserve, by some cook. Even meat in the form of venison and boar has been pickled in the east, down the ages, as well as eggs. Too many eggs, and you are worried about preserving them? Do as the ancient Chinese did. Preserve them in egg pickles. So this book is going to tell you how to make the best use of all those extra vegetables and fruit in your garden, and turn them into a valuable food source, which can be eaten later.

Even if the house is brought to the ground by an earthquake, there is minimal probability of anybody being injured with wooden walls and roof. Repairing wooden houses is also quite cheap when compared to repair of houses built with concrete, blocks, bricksor any other construction material. This means that you’ll end up saving money by simply deciding to build a wooden house. It is also quite easy to alter the design of a wooden house than houses built using other materials. If you want special features in a home, all you need to do is make sure that you own a wooden house and then install all the features you want. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resilient Farm and Homestead is a manual for developing durable, beautiful, and highly functional human habitat systems fit to handle an age of rapid transition. Ben Falk is a land designer and site developer whose permaculture-research farm has drawn national attention. The site is a terraced paradise on a hillside in Vermont that would otherwise be overlooked by conventional farmers as unworthy farmland. Falk's wide array of fruit trees, rice paddies (relatively unheard of in the Northeast), ducks, nuts, and earth-inspired buildings is a hopeful image for the future of regenerative agriculture and modern homesteading. The book covers nearly every strategy Falk and his team have been testing at the Whole Systems Research Farm over the past decade, as well as experiments from other sites Falk has designed through his off-farm consulting business. The book includes detailed information on earthworks; gravity-fed water systems; species composition; the site-design process; site management; fuelwood hedge production and processing; human health and nutrient-dense production strategies; rapid topsoil formation and remineralization; agroforestry/silvopasture/grazing; ecosystem services, especially regarding flood mitigation; fertility management; human labor and social-systems aspects; tools/equipment/appropriate technology; and much more, complete with gorgeous photography and detailed design drawings. The Resilient Farm and Homestead is more than just a book of tricks and techniques for regenerative site development, but offers actual working results in living within complex farm-ecosystems based on research from the "great thinkers" in permaculture, and presents a viable home-scale model for an intentional food-producing ecosystem in cold climates, and beyond. Inspiring to would-be homesteaders everywhere, but especially for those who find themselves with "unlikely" farming land, Falk is an inspiration in what can be done by imitating natural systems, and making the most of what we have by re-imagining what's possible. A gorgeous case study for the homestead of the future.

Book excerpt: Who doesn’t wish to share his or her home with a cage full of “Furry Mongolian Friends” aka gerbils!? Author Susan Anastasi certain does! She describes these irresistible critters as “quiet, clean, friendly, curious, active, and easy-to-please.” In deciding whether the gerbil is for you, Anastasi offers this advice: “If you are looking for a seemingly limitless cache of cuteness—from their long, fanning whiskers and large almond-shaped eyes to heir bunnylike hind legs and tufted tail tips—then gerbils are for you!” Clearly bitten by the gerbil bug, the author begins by providing some basic natural history about gerbils, their origins on the Mongolian range, and an overview of their behaviors. Anastasi defends her favorite pocket pet and asserts that the gentle gerbil does not deserve its Latin name (Meriones ungiculatus), which translates as “clawed warrior.” Filled with terrific color photographs, Gerbils summarizes the basic needs of these adorable rodents, specifically addressing their housing requirements, the cost and commitment involved, and their interactions with children and other pets. The following are devoted to purchasing a healthy gerbil from a pet shop, hobby breeder, or shelter; introducing the gerbil to the home; housing and feeding; taming and handling the pet gerbil; health considerations and potential household hazards; breeding and raising the young; and exhibiting gerbils at shows. The discussion on housing covers the selection of the ideal enclosure, basic housing setup, accessories, safety, and a guide to cleaning the tank. The chapter “Taming and Handling Your Gerbils” offers a step-by-step socialization process to acclimate the gerbil to its new handler and surroundings plus instructions for handling the gerbil and discouraging nipping. All keepers will be interested in the chapter on keeping gerbils healthy through smart preventative care; topics covered include allergies; broken limbs and head injury; teeth, tail, and ear problems; dehydration; diarrhea; heat stroke; hypothermia; mites, and more. Gerbil enthusiasts who are looking to become gerbil midwives will find complete instructions for breeding and raising pups (baby gerbils) in the chapter about reproduction. It covers planning a litter, setting up a breeding tank, mating, caring for the pregnant mom, birthing, fostering, growth cycles, weaning, handling pups, and more. The chapter “Fun with Gerbils” offers ideas for games, art projects, photographing, and training gerbils to do seven fun tricks. Resources include lists of publications, clubs, organizations, and websites. Glossary of terms and index included.
