Book excerpt: This volume summarizes in 16 chapters the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its geological setting in the Pannonian Basin. The work was accomplished by a joint effort of the Hungarian Oil and Gas Co. and U.S. Geological Survey. In contrast with other books that discuss the geology of Hungary, this volume identifies, in detail, potential source rocks and reservoir rocks, and evaluates the maturation, generation, migration, and entrapment of hydrocarbons. The outstanding points are: (1) its summary of the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its structural and sedimentological setting in the Pannonian Basin; (2) the identification of geographic areas, structural trends and stratigraphic zones that remain relatively unexplored; and (3) a summary of `petroleum plays' with an assessment of their recoverable, undiscovered resources of oil and gas. This book is primarily for petroleum geologists interested in oil and gas exploration in Hungary, and earth scientists interested in the geology of the Pannonian Basin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Geology and Basin Analysis: Case Studies on Sedimentary Basins in China introduces the principles, approaches and techniques needed to solve problems using seismic data calibrated with well log, cores and outcrop profiles. The book emphasizes the adoption of seismic techniques into basin analysis and broadens the usage of seismic data in geological research which may be referred to as “seismic geology. The principle of the book is mainly summarized from a series of case studies in different basins in China. In addition, through this book readers can understand the primary characteristics and basin fill evolution of major petroleum basins around the world. When starting research on a basin, researchers and professionals are confronted with how to reveal the general architecture of basin fills and depict three-dimensional geometry, and the internal architecture of subsurface depositional bodies and their arrangement, hence this book is a great tome on necessary areas of exploration. Examines the adoption of seismic techniques into basin analysis and broadens the usage of seismic data in geological research Includes seismic, well log, core and outcrop data, as well as high resolution 3D seismic profiles and slices Features case studies to further illustrate principles and approaches described in the book, which can be applied to similar basins around the world

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cratonic basins are large, distinctive features of the continental crust. They are preferentially developed on thick continental lithosphere, are typically sub-circular in shape and subside over periods of hundreds of millions of years. They are also endowed with significant resources. However, in spite of their location in continental interiors and often well-known geology, the subsidence driving mechanism and tectonic setting of these basins remains controversial. This volume presents both lithospheric and basin scale datasets acquired specifically to interrogate the tectonic process of cratonic basin formation. Focused on the Silurian to Triassic Parnaíba cratonic basin of Brazil, the papers discuss the results of a multidisciplinary basin analysis project comprising new geophysical, geological and geochemical data. This unique dataset enables the characterization of the lithospheric crust and mantle beneath the Parnaíba Basin, constrains the detailed evolution of the basin itself, and enables comparisons with cratonic basins globally. Several convergent themes emerge providing new and powerful constraints for models of the driving mechanisms of these enigmatic basins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book incorporates developments in chronostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and sedimentation and tectonics that have taken place during the last decade. In particular, the wealth of case studies that have appeared since the late 1980s, focusing on sequence architecture and the relationships between sedimentation and tectonics, have required a virtually complete rewriting of Chapters 6 to 9. The global-eustasy model that was popular as a mechanism for sequence generation at the time of writing of the earlier editions of this book has been downplayed in this edition in the face of abundant new evidence pointing to the importance of tectonism as a process that may generate sequences over a wide range of temporal and physical scales. Amongst other additions, this edition contains new sections describing such topics as basin inversion and basement control of sedimentary basin development, and a range of new case studies of the plate tectonics of sedimentary basins.

Book excerpt: Basin Analysis is an up-to-date overview of the essential processes of the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins, and their implications for the development of hydrocarbon resources. The new edition features: A consideration of the fundamental physical state of the lithosphere. A discussion on the major types of lithospheric deformation relevant to basin development – stretching and flexure. A new chapter on the effects of mantle dynamics. Radically revised chapters on the basin-fill. A new chapter on the erosional engine for sediment delivery to basins, reflecting the massive and exciting advances in this area in the last decade. Expansion of the techniques used in approaching problems in basin analysis. Updated chapters on subsidence analysis and measurements of thermal maturity of organic and non-organic components of the basin-fill. New material on thermochronological and exposure dating tools. Inclusion of the important petroleum system concept in the updated section on the application to the petroleum play. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to techniques for quantitative subsidence analysis and visualization with example applications. Subsidence analysis is an essential step to understand basin evolution through geologic time and space in the study of sediments and sedimentary basins. Quantifying techniques have been developed and applied in many basin research projects to evaluate total, tectonic and thermal subsidence. They are also a pre-requisite for basin evolution modelling. Recent studies have applied visualization techniques to understand regional subsidence contexts and trends, which confirmed that three-dimensional visualization of the basin subsidence is highly helpful to gain insight into basin evolution. In this book, we show how geoscience and computer science can be effectively combined in advanced basin analysis, especially in terms of basin subsidence. Each type of subsidence analysis is introduced with example applications. In particular we present a study of the Vienna basin using BasinVis, a MATLAB-based program for analyzing and visualizing basin subsidence. Given its breadth of coverage, this book will benefit students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and provide helpful information for research projects and industry applications.

Book excerpt: In the extensive field of earth sciences, with its many subdisciplines, the trans fer of knowledge is primarily established via personal communication, during meetings, by reading journal articles, or by consulting books. Because more information is available than can be assimilated, it is necessary for the individual to search selectively. Books take more time from the inception of an idea until publication than any of the other means of communication men tioned. As a consequence, their function is somewhat different. Many good books are a compilation of up to date knowledge and serve as reference or instruction manuals. Some books are a collection of previously published papers dealing with a certain topic, while others may basically provide large sets of data or examples. The Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology series was established both for stu dents and practicing earth scientists who wish to either stay abreast of the most recent ideas or developments or to become familiar with an important topic in the field of sedimentary geology. The series attempts to deal with sub jects that are in the forefront of both scientific and economic interest. The treatment of a subject in an individual volume should be a combination of topi cal, regional, and interdisciplinary approaches. Although these three terms can be defined separately, in reality they should flow into each other. A topical treatment should relate to a major category of sedimentary geology.

The basin is one of the largest petroleum provinces in South America and includes a dramatic record of relative sea level changes as well as a unique and globally important palaeontological record. Understanding this region is also central to unravelling the history of the Andes. The latest developments in the study of the area have been combined in this volume to give an integrated series of case studies that document the structural, igneous, sedimentological and palaeontological history of the region from the Triassic to the Recent. This publication provides an introduction into this fascinating region as well as a resource that includes the most complete and up-to-date studies of the area.
