Book excerpt: The various circumstances we face in life that seem unfair, unkind, unwanted, unexpected, and unwarranted may differ, but we all can agree that they fall within two categories: a good hand or a bad hand. This journey will encourage those of us who have been dealt a bad hand in life that Jesus has the power to add life where there is death, praise where there is pain, and strength where there is weakness. Trust Him enough to extend toward Him any and all positive things in your life that he may be withering so that He can make it whole!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout my entire lifetime people have suggested to me that I need to write a book someday! Having grown up in a low income, disadvantaged, dysfunctional and abusive family structure, I truly was, "dealt a bad hand in life". However, I have always been able to overcome my various obstacles and challenges in my life by applying hard work, discipline and dedication principles. Therefore, my autobiography should be a real inspiration for those experiencing difficult times in their own lives as well. Everyone gets dealt bad hands, throughout their lifetimes, and people should not be going around feeling sorry for themselves and making excuses for their failures/setbacks. Instead, we all need to request God's assistance if you are a religious, analyze your situation, make the necessary adjustments and move on with your life. Besides my own personal experiences, all reports of abuse need to be taken seriously and investigated. Just because a person may appear like a reputable person in public should not automatically mean that the abuse allegations are false. Unless, you are around someone all day/ every day you have no idea what kind of person they may be behind the scenes! My book also illustrates how social politics influences our social system in all areas. (Education, sports, sports, law enforcement/ legal issues, media coverage, legislation...etc.) There are special travel bonus areas reviewing most of my domestic and international traveling experiences. I also have a passion for photography and will have many photos included to present a mindset to the reading content. To conclude, my book definitely has something for everyone. Unlike many, I live a very exciting and adventurous lifestyle with a very broad range of interest. Throughout my book, I will insert popular subtopics to discuss that everyone finds to be very intriguing and/or considered taboo topics. After my book publishing cost are met, I plan on donating some of the proceeds towards my churches' community service projects that help out disadvantaged children who live with homeless families or in orphanages. Having grown up being an independent person, without a family, it is a real honor to share my life with you all!

Book excerpt: Believing Is Only the Beginning Do you long for a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in your life? Do you believe all the right things, go to church, and faithfully read your Bible, still feeling that something is missing? You may be right. Two thousand years ago Jesus gave an urgent assignment to his followers right before he left. At its essence it was not just an invitation to believe; it was a bold call to action. It was a challenge to go into the world to reclaim, reform, and restore it for Christ. Simply stated, the message of this book is that God has invited you to join him in this world-changing mission. And if you are not personally participating in God’s great endeavor, you could be missing the very thing he created you to do. Best-selling author Rich Stearns invites you not just to stand on the sidelines but to get into the game. That is when the adventure begins. “Unfinished, just might challenge everything you thought you understood about your Christian faith. Unfinished is a call to finish the job Christ gave his church to do. If every Christian read this book and took it seriously, the world would never be the same again.”—Bill Hybels, senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church; and chairman, Willow Creek Association “Just when I’ve gotten comfortable with my faith, here comes Rich Stearns, reminding me what matters and who God loves and why. Just when my world is the way I want it, Rich reminds me the world is not the way God wants it. Hungry families. Malnourished kids. Just when I dare think my work is done, Rich reminds me that we are just getting started. First in The Hole in Our Gospel, now in Unfinished, Rich gives me a kind, gracious kick. Thanks, Rich. (I think.)”—Max Lucado, pastor and best-selling author “Okay, admit it: sometimes you wonder . . . don’t you? Is this it? The life you’re living. Is there more? From his journey in corporate and nonprofit leadership—in very good causes—Rich Stearns concludes there is, indeed, more. More purpose. More meaning. More life. In Unfinished you will discover how your life can be about more.”—Elisa Morgan, author; speaker; publisher, FullFill; and president emerita, MOPS International “Rich Stearns has done it again! In this winsome, engaging, and challenging book, he calls us back to some of the key issues of what it means to be followers of Christ in a world full of distractions and false gods. This is a book for everyone, about finding the place of our calling in God’s global mission. It is a book about fulfillment, adventure, and a lifetime of transformation. It made me hungry for more of the life God has in store for us.”—Dr. Stephen Hayner, president, Columbia Theological Seminary “Your story can be a part of the Great Story. Rich Stearns knows the story and lives the story. Unfinished may call you to the greatest chapter of your life.”—John Ortberg, senior pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church; and author, Who Is This Man? “The kingdom is both already and not yet, the work of Christ both finished and to be completed. Stearns reminds readers of every Christian’s responsibility to live on mission, in light of Jesus’ example and call. Richard shows us by his life, the ministry he leads, and the passion of this book that there is much to be done and we are to be a part of God’s grand plan.”—Ed Stetzer, president, LifeWay Research; and author, Subversive Kingdom “Every generation of Christians needs a wake-up call to remind us of how serious and strenuous are the demands of discipleship. May Rich Stearns’s Unfinished be that alarm for our time.”—David Neff, editorial vice president, Christianity Today

Book excerpt: Fresh, funny, and fearless, The Middle Finger Project is a point-by-point primer on how to get unstuck, slay imposter syndrome, trust in your own worth and ability, and become a strong, capable, wonderful, weird, brilliant, ballsy, unfuckwithable YOU. "Don't worry, this isn't a book about God, nor is it a book about Ryan Gosling (second in command). But it is a book about authority and becoming your own." --Ash Ambirge After a string of dead-end jobs and a death in the family, Ash Ambirge was down to her last $26 and sleeping in a Kmart parking lot when she faced the truth: No one was coming to her rescue. It was up to her to appoint herself. That night led to what eventually became a six-figure freelance career as a sought-after marketing and copywriting consultant, all while sipping coffee from her front porch in Costa Rica. She then launched The Middle Finger Project, a blog and online course hub, which has provided tens of thousands of young "women who disobey" with the tools and mindset to give everyone else's expectations the finger and get on your own path to happiness, wealth, independence, and adventure. In her first book, Ash draws on her unconventional personal story to offer a fun, bracing, and occasionally potty-mouthed manifesto for the transformative power of radical self-reliance. Employing the signature wit and wordsmithing she's used to build an avid following, she offers paradigm-shifting advice along the lines of: • The best feeling in the world is knowing who you are and what you're capable of doing. • Life circumstances are not life sentences. If a Scranton girl who grew up in a trailer park can make it, so can you. • What you believe about yourself will either murder your chances or save your life. So why not believe something good? • You don't need a high-ranking job title to be authorized to contribute. You just need to contribute. • Be your own authority. Authority only works as long as you trust that someone smarter than you is making the rules. • The way you become a force is by being the most radically real version of yourself that you can be. • You only have 12 fucks a day to give, so use them wisely.

Book excerpt: In the Gospel of Mark, we find a blind man named Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus was blind, but he could hear, and it was his hearing that enabled him to “see” Jesus. We can learn a lot from him as we, too, must find the strength to see God amid the storms of life. In this book, Pastor Ron takes a deep dive into the lessons Bartimaeus provides today. He emphasizes that even if no one else sees Jesus, you must be able to act on faith. After all, faith is taking a blind step when you can’t see where you are stepping. Bartimaeus was willing to take a step of faith because he saw something that no one else could see. He knew that Jesus could heal him—and it is only when we see Jesus that we have the power to bring out our gifts and talents. God designed you for a purpose, and Jesus empowers you to fulfill it, but you must see Him just as Bartimaeus “saw” Him. No matter how dark life may seem, you can overcome anything when you know Jesus is nearby.

Book excerpt: All the people in these stories are unsung heroes. Their stories are true. To honour their privacy, most of the individuals profiled bear fictitious names; a few are composite characters. They have suffered severe trauma, the consequences of which have affected every aspect of their lives, as well as those of family and friends. They demonstrate great, if not superhuman, courage and resilience and never seek or expect applause. Over time, day-by-day, they endeavour to cope with loss, bid to reclaim lost skills, and unheralded, make significant contributions to society. 'Out of Calamity' stories and portraits are told in language that is realistic but also poetic, and demonstrate heroic dimensions even when people appear overwhelmed. Superbly crafted writing that is often raw but also eloquent, spare and affecting, these stories are gems replete with insight and compassion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain damage predisposes many persons with aphasia to a variety of psychological reactions, which are precipitated by stress and loss, and perpetuated by impaired verbal defense mechanisms and coping styles. Most of the literature on recovery from aphasia does not sufficiently address the overwhelming confusion and disorder that aphasia can cause in the patient, the communication partner, the communication between them, and their shared environment. The Psychology of Aphasia: A Practical Guide for Health Care Professionals fills this serious void. Dr. Dennis Tanner has studied the psychology of aphasia as a scientist and professor as well as evaluated and treated thousands of patients with neuropathologies of speech and language as a clinician over his 40-year career. This text represents the culmination of his efforts to understand the major psychological aspects of this complex communications disorder. The only text specifically addressing this topic, The Psychology of Aphasia is designed to provide the reader with a sound foundation of scientific information with current and historical scientific references spanning many decades. It delves into the certain psychological, emotional, and behavioral reactions that occur because of brain and nervous system damage, the psychological defenses and coping styles of patients and the verbal defense mechanisms they are deprived of due to their loss of language, as well as the grief response to the loss of physical abilities, valued objects, and the breakdown in communication. Each chapter is written in accessible language and provides practical case studies, illustrations, and examples of each major concept to reinforce learning. The whole aphasia rehabilitation team of speech-language pathologists, psychologists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, physicians, nurses, home health aides, and family members will find The Psychology of Aphasia: A Practical Guide for Health Care Professionals an enlightening tool to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical issues in treating actual patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “black car” has appeared both conspicuously and inconspicuously throughout the annals of fiction—its presence both mysterious and menacing, its appearance enough to pause your heart. It’s the sedan just within sight that seems to be mimicking your speed and movements as you walk down the dark deserted street late at night. As the hairs rise on the back of your neck you wonder, Who is behind the wheel and what is the driver’s intent? It’s The Black Car Business and its presence means your life is about to abruptly change. You try to assure yourself there’s nothing wrong, but your pace quickens nonetheless, and soon you’re running, desperate for that narrow sliver between two buildings to slip through, the one too narrow for the black car to pass through. It’s that car parked just down the block that sends chills down your spine and keeps you awake throughout the night. It’s the sanctuary you race toward when you’re being chased, only to explode when you turn the key. It’s the one that skids off the icy mountain overpass and plunges into the cavernous grotto. It’s where Clemenza garrotes Carlo just as he’s about to be driven to the airport. It’s The Black Car Business. If The Black Car Business Volume 1 made you nervous Volume 2 will have you climbing the walls. Here are eleven fresh takes on that ominous black whip coming out of nowhere to stun and lay waste to your psyche. You may lose a few nights sleep but we promise it will be worth it.
