The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggles. ▷ 모든 사회의 역사는 계급 투쟁의 역사이다. ▶ Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary. ▷ 어떠한 이유로도 무기와 탄약을 포기해서는 안 됩니다. 필요한 경우 무력으로 노동자를 무장해제하려는 어떠한 시도도 좌절되어야 합니다. ▶ 영혼의 단짝 칼 마르크스(Karl Marx)와 프리드리히 엥겔스(Friedrich Engels) : 엥겔스는 섬유공장을 운영하는 부유한 아버지(an owner of large textile factories)를 두어 재정적으로 풍족했기에, 마르크스가 불규칙적인 인세로 생활하는 동안 물심양면으로 지원하였습니다. 엥겔스는 서신으로 왕래하던 칼 마르크스를 1844년 프랑스 파리에서 처음으로 만났으며, 죽음이 서로를 갈라놓을 때까지 공산주의자이자 지적 동반자, 그리고 재정적 후원자로써 행보를 함께 하였습니다. 두 사람은 신성가족(Die heilige Familie, 1845)을 시작으로 미국 내전에 대하여(The Civil War in the United States, 1861)까지 네 작품을 함께 집필하였으며, 가장 유명한 것은 역시 공산당 선언(The Communist Manifesto, 1848)입니다. 마르크스가 그의 대표작 자본론(資本論, Capital, 1867)을 완성하지 못한 채 1883년 사망하자, 이에 엥겔스가 유고를 모아 편집하는 과정을 거쳐 1885년 제2권, 1894년 제3권을 출간함으로써 완결한 것은 매우 유명한 일화로 아마도 ‘인류 역사상 가장 유명한 공저’가 아닐까 싶습니다. ▶ PREFACE. The "Manifesto" was published as the platform of the "Communist League," a workingmen's association, first exclusively German, later on international, and, under the political conditions of the Continent before 1848, unavoidably a secret society. At a Congress of the League, held in London in November, 1847, Marx and Engels were commissioned to prepare for publication a complete theoretical and practical party programme. ▷ 머리말. "공산주의 선언"은 "공산주의 연맹(Communist League)"의 강령으로 출판되었습니다. 노동자 협회는 처음에는 독점적으로 독일인이었고 나중에는 국제적으로 1848년 이전 유럽 대륙의 정치적 상황에서는 불가피하게 비밀 결사였습니다. 1847년 11월 런던에서 열린 연맹 대회에서 마르크스와 엥겔스는 완전한 이론 및 실제 당 강령의 출판을 준비하라는 위임을 받았습니다. ▶ The defeat of the Parisian insurrection of June, 1848—the first great battle between Proletariat and Bourgeoisie—drove again into the background, for a time, the social and political aspirations of the European working class. Thenceforth, the struggle for supremacy was again, as it had been before the revolution of February, solely between the different sections of the propertied class; the working class was reduced to a fight for political elbow-room, and to the position of extreme wing of the Middle-class Radicals. ▷ 프롤레타리아트와 부르주아지 사이의 첫 번째 대전투인 1848년 6월 파리 봉기의 패배는 한동안 유럽 노동계급의 사회적, 정치적 열망을 다시금 배경으로 내몰았습니다. 그 이후로 패권을 위한 투쟁은 다시 2월 혁명 이전과 마찬가지로 유산계급의 서로 다른 분파들 사이에서만 벌어졌습니다. 노동계급은 정치적 자유를 위한 투쟁으로 전락했고 중산층 급진파의 극단적인 위치로 전락했습니다. ▶ When the European working class had recovered sufficient strength for another attack on the ruling classes, the International Workingmen's Association sprang up. But this association, formed with the express aim of welding into one body the whole militant proletariat of Europe and America, could not at once proclaim the principles laid down in the "Manifesto." ▷ 유럽 노동계급이 지배계급에 대한 또 다른 공격을 위해 충분한 힘을 회복했을 때, 국제노동자협회(International Workmen's Association)가 생겨났습니다. 그러나 유럽과 아메리카의 모든 전투적 프롤레타리아트를 하나의 몸으로 결집시키려는 명백한 목적으로 형성된 이 협회는 "공산주의 선언"에 규정된 원칙을 즉시 선포할 수 없었습니다. ▶ And Marx was right. The International, on its breaking up in 1874, left the workers quite different men from what it had found them in 1864. Proudhonism in France, Lassalleanism in Germany, were dying out, and even the conservative English Trades' Unions, though most of them had long since severed their connection with the International, were gradually advancing towards that point at which, last year at Swansea, their President could say in their name, "Continental Socialism has lost its terrors for us."
