Download or read book Harry Smith's Last Throw written by Keith Smith and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-05-19 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The War of Mlanjeni was the longest conflict in South African history until the second Anglo-Boer War. The loss of life was substantially heavier than that of the Zulu War of 1879 and the political after-effects of it were significantly greater than those that followed the Zulu War. The Zulu War has been the subject of numerous accounts but the silence surrounding the Eighth Frontier War is deafening. Harry Smith's Last Throw fills this gap: a moving history, vividly drawn out using eye-witness accounts. The narrative is not limited to the British perspective. Xhosa accounts have been translated (many for the first time) to avoid an Anglo-centric bias. For both sides by the 8th War there was a great deal of blood to avenge and brutal killings were perpetrated by many combatants. The author provides a colorful backdrop, explaining how the Dutch East India Company came to the Cape to establish a provision station for ships on the way to its East Indies empire. Dutch Burghers settled there but the Company had no interest in Africa itself. In order to be viable farms had to be large and this created a class of independent-minded who looked increasingly to the interior of Africa, pushing the Colonys borders. The wars with the Xhosa were the result of the eventual expansion of these boundaries into Xhosa territory."

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts [2 volumes] by : Timothy J. Stapleton
Download or read book Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts [2 volumes] written by Timothy J. Stapleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two volumes introduce the history of colonial wars in Africa and illustrate why African countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan continue to experience ethnic, political, and religious violence in the early 21st century. This sweeping study examines the wars of colonial conquest fought in Africa during the 19th and early 20th centuries. From Britain's efforts to wrest control of the Sudan from military leader Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, to Italy's decisive defeat at the Battle of Adowa in Ethiopia, to Leopold II's brutal reign over the Belgian Congo, the work surveys the devastation reaped upon the continent by colonization and illustrates how its combative influence continues to resonate in Africa today. Written by scholars in the fields of history and politics, this complete reference includes entries on wars, campaigns, rebellions, battles, leaders, and organizations. The work delves into key historical periods including the "Scramble for Africa" (ca.1880 to 1910); early European colonial wars in Africa, such as the Dutch in the Cape and the Portuguese in Angola and Mozambique; and African rebellions against the early colonial state in the 1890s and early 1900s. Entries feature prominent events and personalities as well as lesser-known occurrences and players.

Book Synopsis Medals of the British Navy and how they were won by : WH Long
Download or read book Medals of the British Navy and how they were won written by WH Long and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain will always be grateful to her Navy for making her an empire, “on which the sun would never set”. It was the British Navy, which time and again, had been solely responsible for routing the forces of the various kingdoms in the world. And it was these acts of heroism by the valiant members of the nautical forces of the British Empire, which deserve more than perhaps just a mere mention. These acts have gone on to win various prestigious medals and other decorative honours. In this book, the author WH Long collates these stories of heroism from the various books and journals, which have long gone out of print. While the stories behind these medals may have been erased from records, they will forever be entrenched in the minds of a grateful British folk. These medals do not merely record an event, but they have a story to tell – a story of valour, courage, determination and patriotism. A must have book for a military enthusiast.
