Book excerpt: The 82nd Airborne Division spent more time in combat than any other American airborne unit of World War II, and its fierce battlefield tenacity earned it the reputation of one of the finest divisions in the world. Yet no comprehensive history of the 82nd during World War II exists today. The Sword of St. Michaelcorrects this significant gap in the literature, offering a lively narrative and thoroughly researched history of the famous division. Author Guy LoFaro, himself a distinguished officer of the division, interweaves the voices of soldiers at both ends of the chain of command, from Eisenhower to the lowest private. Making extensive use of primary sources, LoFaro offers a work of insightful analysis, situating the division's exploits in a strategic and operational context.

Book excerpt: This Leavenworth Paper is a critical reconstruction of World War II Ranger operations conducted at or near Djebel el Ank, Tunisia; Porto Empedocle, Sicily; Cisterna, Italy; Zerf, Germany; and Cabanatuan in the Philippines. It is not intended to be a comprehensive account of World War II Ranger operations, for such a study would have to include numerous minor actions that are too poorly documented to be studied to advantage. It is, however, representative for it examines several types of operations conducted against the troops of three enemy nations in a variety of physical and tactical environments. As such, it draws a wide range of lessons useful to combat leaders who may have to conduct such operations or be on guard against them in the future. Many factors determined the outcomes of the operations featured in this Leavenworth Paper, and of these there are four that are important enough to merit special emphasis. These are surprise, the quality of opposing forces, the success of friendly forces with which the Rangers were cooperating, and popular support.

Download or read book Eighty-second Airborne Division in Sicily and Italy written by United States. Army. Airborne Division, 82nd and published by . This book was released on 1945* with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is one of a series describing campaigns in World War II by the 82d (All-American) Division. In the course of these operations the 82d Airborne Division became the first American Airborne Division to fight in two Theaters of Operations (the North African or Mediterranean, and the European Theaters). General Officers who served in the 82d Airborne Division became commanders of every American Airborne Division that saw action in World War II, and one became commander of the only American Airborne Corps formed during the war. The 82d Infantry Division, a unit which spent more consecutive days under fire than any other American Division in World War I and which suffered a total of 1,035 men killed and 6,387 other casualties, became more than a fire card in the War Department on 25 March, 1942 when it was reactivated at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. With the 77th and 90th Divisions, the 82d became one of the first three reserve divisions to be reactivated for service in World War II.

Less than a year from their formation in August 1942, the All Americans (the name of the division in World War I when Sgt. Alvin York was one its soldiers) found themselves in the thick of the action, something that would become familiar to them for the rest of the war. Heavy combat followed on the Italian mainland. Then came the main event of the war: D-Day!
