Download or read book Overtourism written by Rachel Dodds and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overtourism has become a major concern for an increasing number of destinations as tourism numbers continue to grow, stimulated by general economic and technological growth and the expansion of the global middle class. This, coupled with relentless promotion of tourism by many organisations and destinations, has increased tourism, despite growing opposition to excessive development. This book is the first academic volume to deal with this topic and contains chapters by experienced researchers in the tourism field, taking a multidisciplinary approach to review and explain the subject. The introductory section begins with an overview of the current situation and the forces enabling the appearance of overtourism. This is followed by a number of case studies from a range of destinations around the world, both urban and rural, which share the same problems. The concluding section includes a discussion of potential mitigation methods and approaches and a final assessment of future developments. The focus and relevance of this book are not just for academics, as it offers insights into destinations, enablers and solutions for how to address the issue of overtourism on a wide variety of scales. This book offers globally relevant perspectives on destinations as varied as Venice and Barcelona, that have gained global media attention, as well as less publicised rural areas and developing destinations.

Book Synopsis A History of Weed Science in the United States by : Robert L Zimdahl
Download or read book A History of Weed Science in the United States written by Robert L Zimdahl and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is important that scientists think about and know their history - where they came from, what they have accomplished, and how these may affect the future. Weed scientists, similar to scientists in many technological disciplines, have not sought historical reflection. The technological world asks for results and for progress. Achievement is important not, in general, the road that leads to achievement. What was new yesterday is routine today, and what is described as revolutionary today may be considered antiquated tomorrow. Weed science has been strongly influenced by technology developed by supporting industries, subsequently employed in research and, ultimately, used by farmers and crop growers. The science has focused on results and progress. Scientists have been--and the majority remain--problem solvers whose solutions have evolved as rapidly as have the new weed problems needing solutions. In a more formal sense, weed scientists have been adherents of the instrumental ideology of modern science. That is an analysis of their work, and their orientation reveals the strong emphasis on practical, useful knowledge; on know how. The opposite, and frequently complementary orientation, that has been missing from weed science is an emphasis on contemplative knowledge; that is, knowing why. This book expands on and analyzes how these orientations have affected weed science’s development. The first analytical history of weed science to be written Compares the development of weed science, entomology and plant pathology Identifies the primary founders of weed science and describes their role
Book Synopsis Microbial Control of Weeds by : D.O. TeBeest
Download or read book Microbial Control of Weeds written by D.O. TeBeest and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is appropriate at this time to reflect on two decades of research in biological control of weeds with fungal plant pathogens. Some remarkable events have occurred in the last 20 years that represent a flurry of activity far beyond what could reasonably have been predicted. In 1969 a special topics review article by C. L. Wilson was published in Annual Reviews of Phytopathology that examined the literature and the potential for biological control of weeds with plant pathogens. In that same year, experiments were conducted in Arkansas that determined whether a fungal plant pathogen could reduce the infestation of a single weed species in rice fields. In Florida a project was under way to determine the potential use of a soil-borne plant pathogen as a means for controlling a single weed species in citrus groves. Work in Australia was published that described experiments that sought to determine whether a pathogen could safely and deliberately be imported and released into a country to control a weed of agricultural importance. All three projects were successful in the sense that Puccinia chondrillina was released into Australia to control rush skeleton weed and was released later into the United States as well, and that Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. aeschynomene and Phytophthora palmivora were later both marketed for the specific purpose of controlling specific weed species.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Mass Spectrometry by : Kenzo Hiraoka
Download or read book Fundamentals of Mass Spectrometry written by Kenzo Hiraoka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most research and all publications in mass spectrometry address either applications or practical questions of procedure. This book, in contrast, discusses the fundamentals of mass spectrometry. Since these basics (physics, chemistry, kinetics, and thermodynamics) were worked out in the 20th century, they are rarely addressed nowadays and young scientists have no opportunity to learn them. This book reviews a number of useful methods in mass spectrometry and explains not only the details of the methods but the theoretical underpinning.
Book Synopsis Animal Breeding and Genetics by : Matthew L. Spangler

Book Synopsis Directors' Decisions and the Law by : Alice Belcher
Download or read book Directors' Decisions and the Law written by Alice Belcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directors are key decision-makers in any organisation, whether it is in the public sector, a family business or a transnational company. The UK Companies Act 2006 codified directors’ duties for the first time and describes the director as the ‘most likely to promote the success of the company for the benefit of its members as a whole’. This book addresses key tensions and problems involved in the duties and responsibilities of the director in promoting success, including corporate culture and credibility, trust, risk and uncertainty, collective responsibility, and the degree of control. The book considers directors’ decision-making in both private and public sector organisations and explicitly examines aspects of decision-making during periods of financial distress. The book compares the legal contexts of director’s decisions in the UK to those of the USA, Germany and Australia, and takes an interdisciplinary approach in its combination of management theory, economic theory and behavioural studies. In doing so the book addresses issues key to the understanding of corporate governance in light of recent financial crises.
