Book excerpt: The English translation of the three-volume Exegetisches Wrterbuch zum Neuen Testament, this monumental work by an ecumenical group of scholars is first of all a complete English dictionary of New Testament Greek. Going beyond that, however EDNT also serves as a guide to the usage of every New Testament word in its various contexts, and it makes a significant contribution to New Testament exegesis and theology. EDNT's thorough, lengthy discussions of more significant words and its grouping of words related by root and meaning (with alphabetical cross-references) distinguish it from simpler Greek-English lexicons. Advancing the discussion of the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, EDNT summarizes more recent treatments of numerous questions in New Testament study and takes into consideration newer viewpoints of linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Church Chronicles: The Hireling (Hustler) is a thought-provoking critique of the modern Black Church leadership, written by Senior Pastor/Watchman B.D. Dale. In this first volume of a six-part series, Dale exposes the damaging influence of corrupt African American pastors, whom Jesus Christ referred to as "hirelings"—individuals who have abandoned their spiritual responsibilities in pursuit of personal power, prestige, and position. Drawing solely on biblical doctrine, rather than denominational orthodoxy, Dale critiques both the uncalled and unanointed leaders, as well as those genuinely called, for abandoning biblical principles and exploiting their congregations in search of praise that belongs only to the Lord God. This devotional-style book also sheds light on how the Black Church’s integrity has been compromised by the toxic "hey doc" culture, eroding its spiritual impact on those most in need of an encounter with Jesus. Dale unpacks how false doctrines, akin to the leaven of the Pharisees, have crippled the Black Church's effectiveness and weakened its witness. Through clear, concise, and powerful teaching, Dale addresses the deceptive practices of black pulpit elitism, the neglect of righteous judgment, and the misinterpretation of "touch not God's anointed" as a blanket command. He contrasts these errors with what Scripture truly says, offering much-needed correction to what has often been inaccurately preached in African American churches.

Book excerpt: We love to share good news with the world—a great restaurant, a coveted promotion, a new baby—and that makes us evangelists for many things. So why don't we do the same with Jesus? Simply put, talking about Jesus is awkward. Yet when we brave the awkwardness, we see God work. Beau Crosetto helps us move out of our comfort zones and beyond the awkwardness to share the life-transforming power of God with others.

Book excerpt: In The Function of the Speeches in the Acts of the Apostles, Janusz Kucicki offers a new approach to interpretation of speeches contained in the Acts of the Apostles. He separated all speeches from the narrative parts of Acts and analyze them independently. Without narrative contexts the speeches expose their interrelation that allow to categorize the speeches into two major groups. The first group named "the topic speeches" contains the speeches, which create the topic group with common theme that is developed within the three speeches, where the first takes introductory character, the second takes the progressive character and the third takes the conclusive character. The second group of speeches named “the structural speeches” contains the speeches without developed theme.

Book excerpt: The history of biblical interpretation has attracted considerable attention in recent decades. This is particularly true in the field of medieval exegesis where much effort has been spent on making primary materials available and advancing their interpretation. One area of research in which even the most basic questions are still under debate is the phenomenon of the biblical Glossa Ordinaria, the standard Bible commentary used by Christian theologians from the twelfth century to the Reformation. Part I of the present collection unites the author's major contributions to Glossa studies - its origin, its false ascription to Walahfrid Strabo, its use among the preachers of the thirteenth and fourteenth century and the Reformers, both Catholic and Protestant, of the sixteenth. A central concern here is the fascinating history of the printed Gloss which began with the Strasbourg edition of 1480/81. Part II concentrates on the image of two central New Testament figures, the Apostles Peter and Paul, in biblical exegesis. The studies illuminate the pivotal role in the history of the church played by certain shifts in the understanding of Petrine texts, and trace conflicting tendencies in the interpretation of Paul down to the Reformation of the sixteenth century. Three of the thirteen essays have not been published before.
