Book Synopsis Human Diversity by : Bernard Charles Lamb
Download or read book Human Diversity written by Bernard Charles Lamb and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human diversity, with its myriad of different conditions involving biology, psychology, and social structures, remains one of the biggest challenges — and opportunities — facing the species. With many government and private firms now having diversity or equality officers, programmes or committees, it is clear that human diversity is a cornerstone of policy-making at the very highest echelons. All this points to a need for proper scientific and medical information on this topic — not soft 'politically correct' sociology. This book provides the hard facts on human similarities and differences, their causes and effects on people. It covers the whole range from normal to extreme human types, and presents — for the first time — much of the author's 25 years of original research on the subject. It can also act as a family medical guide to aspects of human function, structure and disease. It covers many human topics in a humane and understandable fashion, providing much material for information and discussion. It can be used as a handbook or textbook on human diversity, but is mainly popular science for the general public. A special feature of this book is the 140 colour photos that illustrate the diversity of human life, nearly all taken by the author himself. Given the vast nature of the subject, the book seamlessly integrates relevant data from multiple disciplines including medicine, biology, anthropology, genetics, psychology, evolution, languages, sociology, history and geography. Even controversial subjects such as race, class and culture are tackled head-on with no-nonsense scientific rigour."--
Book Synopsis From Reception to Integration of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Poland by : Karolina Sobczak-Szelc
Download or read book From Reception to Integration of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Poland written by Karolina Sobczak-Szelc and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the complex experiences of asylum seekers and refugees in Poland, against a local backdrop of openly anti-refugee political narratives and strong opposition to sharing the responsibility for, and burden of, asylum seekers arriving in the EU. Through a multidimensional analysis, it highlights the processes of forced migrant admission, reception and integration in a key EU frontier country that has undergone a rapid migration status change from a transit to a host country. The book examines rich qualitative material drawn from interviews conducted with forced migrants with different legal statuses and with experts from public administration at the central and local levels, NGOs, and other institutions involved in migration governance in Poland. It discusses both opportunities for and limitations on forced migrants’ adaptation in the social, economic, and political dimensions, as well as their access to healthcare, education, the labour market, and social assistance. This book will be of particular interest to scholars, students, policymakers, and practitioners in migration and asylum studies, social policy, public policy, international relations, EU studies/European integration, law, economics, and sociology.

Download or read book Cross-Border Resource Management written by Rongxing Guo and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discussing theoretical and analytical issues relating to cross-border resource management, this book explores a group of geographical, political, legal, economic and cultural factors that arise when political units (such as sovereign countries, dependent states and other administrative units) seek to maximize their political and economic interests while minimizing the resultant damage (e.g. resource degradation and preservation of the physical environment). The book is organized into three parts. Part one discusses the theoretical issues relating to cross-border development and the cross-border management of natural and environmental resources. Part two provides a variety of alternatives to advancing cross-border development as well as of options for cross-border management of resource exploitation and for cross-border conflict management. In Part three, using the theoretical and methodological frameworks that have been discussed in Parts one and two, respectively, two in-depth case studies on cross-border development and resource management are provided. Examines various types of cross-border areas at both international and sub-national levels throughout the world as well as their geographical, political, economic and cultural influences on the cross-border resource management Uses the latest international and area data, resulting in new findings for cross-border environmental activities Contains numerous case studies throughout the world including in-depth case studies of cross-border resource management

Book Synopsis Migration, Refugee Policy, and State Building in Postcommunist Europe by : Oxana Shevel
Download or read book Migration, Refugee Policy, and State Building in Postcommunist Europe written by Oxana Shevel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do similar postcommunist states respond differently to refugees? Why do some states privilege certain refugee groups, while other states do not? This book presents a theory to account for this puzzle, and it centers on the role of the politics of nation-building and of the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). A key finding of the book is that when the boundaries of a nation are contested (and thus there is no consensus on which group should receive preferential treatment in state policies), a political space for a receptive and nondiscriminatory refugee policy opens up. The book speaks to the broader questions of how nationalism matters after communism and under what conditions and through what mechanisms international actors can influence domestic polices. The analysis is based on extensive primary research the author conducted in four languages in the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.
