Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formative years of the 1950s are explored in this fourth installment of Evro's decade-by-decade series covering all Formula 1 cars and teams. When the World Championship was first held in 1950, red Italian cars predominated, from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati, and continued to do so for much of the period. But by the time the decade closed, green British cars were in their ascendancy, first Vanwall and then rear-engined Cooper playing the starring roles, and BRM and Lotus having walk-on parts. As for drivers, one stood out above the others, Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, becoming World Champion five times. Much of the fascination of this era also lies in its numerous privateers and also-rans, all of which receive their due coverage in this complete work. Year-by-year treatment covers each season in fascinating depth, running through the teams -- and their various cars -- in order of importance. Alfa Romeo's supercharged 11⁄2-litre cars dominated the first two years, with titles won by Giuseppe Farina (1950) and Fangio (1951). The new marque of Ferrari steamrollered the opposition in two seasons run to Formula 2 rules (1952-53), Alberto Ascari becoming champion both times, and the same manufacturer took two more crowns with Fangio (1956) and Mike Hawthorn (1958). Maserati's fabulous 250F, the decade's most significant racing car, propelled Fangio to two more of his five championships (1954 and 1957). German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz stepped briefly into Formula 1 (1954-55) and won almost everything with Fangio and up-and-coming Stirling Moss. Green finally beat red when the Vanwalls, driven by Moss and Tony Brooks, won the inaugural constructors' title (1958). Then along came Cooper, rear-engine pioneers, to signpost Formula 1's future when Jack Brabham became World Champion (1959).

Book excerpt: This highly visual book explores the seldom-told story of how glamour, fashion, design, and styling became the main focus of automotive marketing from the postwar 1940s through the 1970s. With the expansion of the American suburbs after WWII, women suddenly needed cars of their own. By adopting the fashion industry's yearly model changes, as well as hiring many designers and stylists from the fashion industry, the automobile industry made a direct appeal to the rising sophistication and influence of women. By perfecting the fashion-centric concept of planned obsolescence, it became the dominant economic engine of American postwar prosperity. The dramatic photography, elegant fashion, and use of color and materials in midcentury automotive marketing created a groundswell of demand for new cars. Much of the marketing imagery of the period hasn't been published since it first came out, and this book features some of the best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reprieve from post-war austerity, the 1950s epitomized a time of glamour with its film icons and automobiles, which are admired and emulated to this day. Nothing said, "You've made it," quite like getting glammed up and going for a spin in your brand new automobile. The shapes and shades of cars were bright and exaggerated. Car design showed a fervent embrace of the future and a willingness to experiment with something new. Riviera Cocktail photographer Edward Quinn captured all the stars and idols from the worlds of film, music, and the arts, as well as their admirers. Picasso and his Hispano-Suiza, Brigitte Bardot in her Lancia, and many more are featured with their motor toys. With a keen eye and playful exuberance, his images define fifties style.

At the start of the 1950s, Morris, Austin and Ford put increasing numbers of British families on four wheels, while new sports cars from MG, Jaguar, Triumph and Austin-Healey promised motoring excitement. Giles Chapman investigates the fascinating motoring decade of the 1950s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s the American automobile industry arrived in style. In the postwar boom, Americans were flush and full of optimism. They wanted cars that reflected the spirit of the day, and automakers happily obliged. Thus began the decade of fins and whitewalls, craftsmanship and fine-tuned art on wheels--the decade celebrated in this book. Here are the cars that Detroit came up with, drawing on all the muscle and magic of the era, the unprecedented prosperity and new technologies and true feats of design. In splendid, full-color pictures and fact-filled text, the book recreates the iconic era of American automobiles, one car at a time. From stylish sports cars like the Corvette and Thunderbird, to luxury Lincoln and Cadillac sedans, to the inimitable models from independents like Nash, Studebaker, Crosley, American Cars of the 1950s conveys the spirit of automotive America at its best.
