Book Synopsis Setting Plato Straight by : Todd W. Reeser
Download or read book Setting Plato Straight written by Todd W. Reeser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we talk of platonic love or relationships today, we mean something very different from what Plato meant. For this, we have fifteenth and sixteenth-century European humanists to thank. As these scholars—most of them Catholic—read, digested, and translated Plato, they found themselves faced with a fundamental problem: how to be faithful to the text yet not propagate pederasty or homosexuality. In Setting Plato Straight, Todd W. Reeser undertakes the first sustained and comprehensive study of Renaissance textual responses to Platonic same-sex sexuality. Reeser mines an expansive collection of translations, commentaries, and literary sources to study how Renaissance translators transformed ancient eros into non-erotic, non-homosexual relations. He analyzes the interpretive lenses translators employed and the ways in which they read and reread Plato’s texts. In spite of this cleansing, Reeser finds surviving traces of Platonic same-sex sexuality that imply a complicated, recurring process of course-correction—of setting Plato straight.
Book Synopsis The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia (Encyclopedia) by : Martin Olson
Download or read book The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia (Encyclopedia) written by Martin Olson and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2013-07-22 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What time is it? Adventure Time™! Explore the magical world of Ooo with Jake the Dog and Finn the Human, along with the Ice King, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline the Vampire Queen, and all your favorite Adventure Time characters, in this New York Times bestselling companion book to Cartoon Network’s hit animated series. Written and compiled by the Lord of Evil himself, The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia matches the playful, subversive tone of the television series, detailing everything anyone will ever need to know about the postapocalyptic land of Ooo and its inhabitants—secret lore and spells, fun places you should visit and places where you will probably die, whom to marry and whom not to marry, how to make friends and destroy your enemies—plus hand-written marginalia by Finn, Jake, and Marceline. An indispensable guide to the show fans love to watch, this side-splittingly funny love letter to Adventure Time is sure to appeal to readers of all ages. Heck yeah! From the Back Cover: Written by the Lord of Evil Himself, Hunson Abadeer (a.k.a. Marceline the Vampire Queen's dad), to instruct and confound the demonic citizenry of the Nightosphere, The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia is perhaps the most dangerous book in history. Although seemingly a guidebook to the Land of Ooo and its postapocalyptic inhabitants, it is in fact an amusing nightmare of literary pitfalls, bombastic brain-boggles, and ancient texts designed to drive the reader mad. Complete with secret lore and wizard spells, fun places you should visit and places where you will probably die, advice on whom to marry and whom not to marry, and how to make friends and destroy your enemies, this volume includes hand-written marginalia by Finn, Jake, and Marceline. Arguably the greatest encyclopaedia ever written since the beginning of the cosmos, it is also an indispensable companion to humans and demons who know what time it is: Adventure Time! Praise for The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia: “Even if you’re an adult Adventure Time fan, the book will make you feel like you’re 10 again.” —USA Today’s Daily Candy blog “The brand-new Adventure Time Encyclopaedia will tell viewers everything they need to know about the post-apocalyptic magical land and its inhabitants.” —Entertainment Weekly’s Family Room blog “The . . . Encyclopaedia will appeal to Adventure Time fans who want to delve deeper into the show’s mysterious back story and bizarre details.” —The Los Angeles Times’Hero Complex blog

Book Synopsis Racing Toward Zero by : Kelly Senecal
Download or read book Racing Toward Zero written by Kelly Senecal and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Racing Toward Zero, the authors explore the issues inherent in developing sustainable transportation. They review the types of propulsion systems and vehicle options, discuss low-carbon fuels and alternative energy sources, and examine the role of regulation in curbing emissions. All technologies have an impact on the environment, from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hybrids-there is no silver bullet. The battery electric vehicle may seem the obvious path to a sustainable, carbon-free transportation future, but it's not the only, nor necessarily the best, path forward. The vast majority of vehicles today use the internal combustion engine (ICE), and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Improving the ICE and its fuels-entering a new ICE age-must be a main route on the road to zero emissions. How do we go green? The future requires a balanced approach to transportation. It's not a matter of choosing between combustion or electrification; it's combustion and electrification. As the authors say, "The future is eclectic." By harnessing the best qualities of both technologies, we will be in the best position to address our transportation future as quickly as possible.
