Book excerpt: Winner of a Society of Authors' Eric Gregory Award 2021 J. H. Prynne: "These sonnets are strenuously ordered by traditional lineation and near-rhyme; but the cadastral envelopes compose an exotic material world-order and the lexicon is extensively far-fetched. The line-turnings are scarce mollified by expectation, insistently granular and undisturbed by punctuation or (except in captions) by upper-case usage. A dense jungle of hyper-variegated vocabulary, syntax exempt from phrasal interference, at minimum holds these poems into their sequence and outreach; they are a clear benefit to read and ponder, persistently revisited by unexpected discoveries." Peter Larkin: "Breaking out of the burdens of contemporary pastoral, these sonnets reprocess scientific and technological jargon with the force of poetic neologism across networks of association. Apparent prose sound-offs are held in suspension by strongly resurfacing metrics, half-buried iambics and defiant couplet-echoes. Ultimately, Symbiont intensifies its anger on behalf of a new lyrical counter-expansion of ecological resources, while finding space for deep and wishful interludes amid terrestrial trauma."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronwen Wallace Memorial Award-winning poet Sonnet L'Abbé returns with her third collection, in which a mixed-race woman decomposes her inheritance of Shakespeare by breaking open the sonnet and inventing an entirely new poetic form. DOROTHY LIVESAY POETRY PRIZE FINALIST RAYMOND SOUSTER AWARD FINALIST How can poetry grapple with how some cultures assume the place of others? How can English-speaking writers use the English language to challenge the legacy of colonial literary values? In Sonnet's Shakespeare, one young, half-dougla (mixed South Asian and Black) poet tries to use "the master's tools" on the Bard's "house," attempting to dismantle his monumental place in her pysche and in the poetic canon. In a defiant act of literary patricide and a feat of painstaking poetic labour, Sonnet L'Abbé works with the pages of Shakespeare's sonnets as a space she will inhabit, as a place of power she will occupy. Letter by letter, she sits her own language down into the white spaces of Shakespeare's poems, until she overwhelms the original text and effectively erases Shakespeare's voice by subsuming his words into hers. In each of the 154 dense new poems of Sonnet's Shakespeare sits one "aggrocultured" Shakespearean sonnet--displaced, spoken over, but never entirely silenced. L'Abbé invented the process of Sonnet's Shakespeare to find a way to sing from a body that knows both oppression and privilege. She uses the procedural techniques of Oulipian constraint and erasure poetries to harness the raw energies of her hyperconfessional, trauma-forged lyric voice. This is an artist's magnum opus and mixed-race girlboy's diary; the voice of a settler on stolen Indigenous territories, a sexual assault survivor, a lover of Sylvia Plath and Public Enemy. Touching on such themes as gender identity, pop music, nationhood, video games, and the search for interracial love, this book is a poetic achievement of undeniable scope and significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Les Cinquantes Sonnets is the first book by poet Kelechukwu Brnfre (www.kelechukwubrnfre.com) This is my first book of poetry that includes my signature poem "Zero." I wrote this book as a gift to my fiancee at the time for her birthday. I wrote 34 poems for her 34th birthday in the form of Sonnets. I was reading Shakespeare at the time and I was inspired by his sonnets but I formed all of these poems in 16 lines because her favorite number was 16. The first 34 poems were influenced by her and the last 17 poems were influenced by a mixture of people, emotions and situations. I am very thankful for Erica Walker reading it over and encouraging me to make all of last 17 stay consistent with a theme of love, a subject I struggle to write about because it is so subjective. Loving a family member or your children is different from a person you are involved with intimately in a relationship. The format of this book starts with zero and goes to fifty. I used French because I am bilingual French and it seemed to fit the scheme and format of the subject matter in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With no fewer than 84 contributors, this is a truly groundbreaking anthology. There are plenty of modern sonnet anthologies around; but none that have delved so thoroughly into the myriad ways poets have stretched, deconstructed and re-composed the venerable form, including visual and concrete sonnets. We take as our time frame 1945 to the 21st century, with poets ranging from Edwin Denby (born - 1903) to those currently in their twenties. Jeff Hilson, the editor, contributes an introductory essay. It's contributors include: Robert Adamson, Jeremy Adler, Tim Atkins, Ted Berrigan, Jen Bervin, Rachel Blau duPlessis, Christian Bok, Sean Bonney, Ebbe Borregaard, Jonathan Brannen, Pam Brown, Laynie Browne, Thomas A Clark, Adrian Clarke, John Clarke, Bob Cobbing, Clark Coolidge, Kelvin Corcoran, Beverly Dahlen, Ian Davidson, Edwin Denby, Laurie Duggan, Paul Dutton, Ken Edwards, Michael Farrell, Allen Fisher, Kathleen Fraser, William Fuller, John Gibbens, Harry Gilonis, Giles Goodland, Bill Griffiths, Alan Halsey, Robert Hampson, Jeff Hilson, Anselm Hollo, Lyn Hejinian, Piers Hugill, Peter Jaeger, Elizabeth James, Lisa Jarnot, Keith Jebb, Justin Katko, John Kinsella, Philip Kuhn, Michelle Leggott, Tony Lopez, Chris McCabe, Steve McCaffery, Jackson Mac Low, Richard Makin, Peter Manson, Brian Marley, Bernadette Mayer, Jay Millar, David Miller, and Peter Minter.

Book excerpt: This collection represents efforts to persuade any reader that the sonnet does not have to be a form impossible to emulate nor too difficult to understand. It should be looked upon as a challenge to fit a universe of emotions into a particular framework simple in its limitations but as complex in its potential as the great writers before had made them through the brilliance of their individual genius.Themes are as different as the experiences of the writer from day to day from birth to death and all the time in between. The language need not be lofty nor does it need to reach down to the vulgar. It can borrow from the past and delve into that of the future. It can keep the rhyme schemes of those who made them famous, or it may create new ones for any reason or none at all.If sonnets are not worth reading, they would never have been made.
