Book excerpt: A nearly $19 trillion debt. A 74,608-page tax code. An increase in global temperatures. A broken Social Security system. These are just some of the problems plaguing our nation. While politicians are quick to offer lip service, they are slow -- or non-existent -- with solutions. Americans are frustrated with the lack of leadership as evidenced by Congress' 10 percent approval rating. Now is the time for simple, bold changes that will alter the direction of this nation. Drawing on more than three decades of business experience, John Burke applies his tested problems-and-solutions approach and independent thinking to tackle the complex problems that America faces. In 12 Simple Solutions to Save America, Burke proposes concrete solutions to fix these issues and challenges Americans to resist the status quo and change what elected officials are unwilling or unable to change. Americans have a civic duty to make the tough decisions that improve the lives of citizens over the long-term. It can be done, but it will not happen by accident.

Book excerpt: A sobering account of a disenfranchised American working class and important policy solutions to the nation's economic inequalities One of the country's leading scholars on economics and social policy, Isabel Sawhill addresses the enormous divisions in American society--economic, cultural, and political--and what might be done to bridge them. Widening inequality and the loss of jobs to trade and technology has left a significant portion of the American workforce disenfranchised and skeptical of governments and corporations alike. And yet both have a role to play in improving the country for all. Sawhill argues for a policy agenda based on mainstream values, such as family, education, and work. Although many have lost faith in government programs designed to help them, there are still trusted institutions on both the local and the federal level that can deliver better job opportunities and higher wages to those who have been left behind. At the same time, the private sector needs to reexamine how it trains and rewards employees. This book provides a clear-headed and middle-way path to a better-functioning society in which personal responsibility is honored and inclusive capitalism and more broadly shared growth are once more the norm.

Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin's iconic words to Elizabeth Powel, upon leaving the Constitutional Convention, were, "A republic, ma'am, if you can keep it." The Constitution was written to stand the test of time, and to resist the fiery arrows of tyrants. The modern political atmosphere, however, leaves most Americans uneasy. Have we lost our republic? America's Constitution Authority, Douglas V. Gibbs, reminds us that while our republic has not been lost, we teeter on the edge of a treacherous cliff. While we have not passed the sign that reads, "the point of no return," we are close enough to it that we can read the small print on the bottom which says, "Made in China." How do we, as Americans, regain a foothold on our journey to restore the constitutional republic, and reestablish the principles and philosophies of the United States Constitution? We have failed to focus on our own core responsibilities as citizens, and we have been allowing the sovereignty and autonomy of the States to be neutralized and dismantled. A ruling class has established itself in the halls of government, diminishing the power of We the People, and growing the power of an emerging oligarchy in America. The rise of tyranny in America should instill in us a patriotic and revolutionary call to action. We the People need to have the courage to take on the establishment, and be informed enough to know how to do it. Without an informed populace carrying out their civic duty of keeping the republic, how can the Blessings of Liberty be handed down to the next generation? Have we been experiencing such a steady decline in freedom that we have forgotten what liberty truly is? How do we restore our constitutional republic, especially at this stage in the game? The Founding Fathers gave us a quiver full of remedies to combat tyranny. All we must do is apply them during our advocacy to keep the republic. It's not too late to save America. The opportunity to keep the republic exists, and if properly informed of the solutions available to us, we can make the necessary adjustments so as to place America back on the proper path of liberty. The only questions that remain are, "Do we have the willingness to educate ourselves regarding those solutions?," and "Do we have the discipline to carry out those remedies, once we learn what they are?"

Book excerpt: The message of this extraordinary election [in November 2010] is clear enough: the American citizenry has rejected the secular dogma, socialist policies, and machine-driven politics that comprise the Obama agenda. Now, the question is whether President Obama and his Democratic Party will accept the will of the people and change the destructive course upon which they have set this country. . . . [F]irst and foremost, Republicans must fight to dislodge the secular-socialist machine whose methods and goals are described in this book. This machine has driven America so deeply into debt, and has so fundamentally changed the relationship between the American citizenry and our government, that our childrenâ??s future is now imperiled. We cannot assume that after the 2010 election, the machine will simply accept the will of the people. After all, the very purpose of a political machine is to thwart the will of the people.

Book excerpt: National polling indicates that for the first time in American history, people believe their children will not be as well off as they are. The primary reason for this? The lack of performance by government. The public sector receives trillions of American taxpayer dollars every year and yet because of its seeming inability to run effectively, government is not delivering the level of service the people are paying for. In Saving America, Mark Aesch tells us where government -- at the local, state, and federal level -- is falling short and offers a coherent, non-partisan, Seven-Step plan for rebuilding our nation's public agencies. The book is not a political broadside or a theoretical academic tract; it's an accessible guidebook that helps local citizens, elected officials, and administrators make American government great again. The Seven Steps process will lead to measurable gains for organizations large and small, including school systems, municipal governments, entire states, and even the federal government itself.

Book excerpt: I am deeply concerned about the future of the United States. I believe our leaders have failed to adequately address many of the large problems we have as a country. I believe that as citizens, we are going to have the same leadership options in 2024 that we have had in past elections. We have a low-performance Government; our health-care system is almost twice as expensive as other Western countries and delivers the worst results when compared to those countries; our tax code is overly complicated, favoring the rich over everyone else; and we are $33 trillion in debt with no plan to pay for it. The list of significant issues that our leaders fail to address goes on and on. The United States used to lead the world as an example of good government. Those days are over, but they don't need to be. I am running for President because I think our country needs massive change.

Book excerpt: Saving America is a book that discusses reforms regarding basic societal and governmental structures in the U.S. that need changing, adjusting or just tweaking. These alterations, the author points out, are needed to keep America strong in today's ever-changing world. The book offers statistics that each American needs to know. Specific problems are mentioned as are the related reasons for reform. What becomes unique in this book is that the author provides simple solutions in plain language to remedy the problems. The book desires to instill enough feeling and discomfort in the reader to encourage him/her to do something about each issue. The author does this in a plain, simple and lighthearted method using idioms, cliches and sayings of everyday Americana that relate to the vast majority of citizens. Rather than allowing the reader to become lost or overwhelmed in the unnecessary complexities that surround each reform issue as most experts do, the author offers basic solutions that would provide the essential framework for change. Saving America is written as a "wakeup call" to todays apathetic and "do nothing" people to act on their complaints and concerns. The author promotes a foundation of suggestions that can be expanded upon by the appropriate related experts in each field. It is not an "either/or" scenario, but a "Let's try this" option. This book is not a tutorial, a "how-to" manual, nor a gospel sermon. The book's objective is that of an action inhibitor. The author wants Americans to think and feel, but not attain frustration. Americans are ingenious and creative. The author essentially states that the destiny of our country is in the readers'/Americans' hands.

Book excerpt: Consumer advocate, activist, humanitarian, and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader is arguably the most provocative and important progressive voice in America today—a fearless reformer whom The Atlantic named one of the 100 most influential figures in American history. In these troubling times of intractable fiscal and social distress, Nader offers a new program to help rescue America: The Seventeen Solutions. His powerful, paradigm-shifting proposals address some of the most pressing concerns in our country today—from corporate crime to tax reform to health care and housing—and they should find a receptive audience not only among liberals, progressives, disillusioned Democrats, Rachel Maddow fans, and Occupy Wall Street supporters, but all concerned Americans.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER To get ahead today, you have to be a jerk, right? Divisive politicians. Screaming heads on television. Angry campus activists. Twitter trolls. Today in America, there is an “outrage industrial complex” that prospers by setting American against American, creating a “culture of contempt”—the habit of seeing people who disagree with us not as merely incorrect, but as worthless and defective. Maybe, like more than nine out of ten Americans, you dislike it. But hey, either you play along, or you’ll be left behind, right? Wrong. In Love Your Enemies, social scientist and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller From Strength to Strength Arthur C. Brooks shows that abuse and outrage are not the right formula for lasting success. Brooks blends cutting-edge behavioral research, ancient wisdom, and a decade of experience leading one of America’s top policy think tanks in a work that offers a better way to lead based on bridging divides and mending relationships. Brooks’ prescriptions are unconventional. To bring America together, we shouldn’t try to agree more. There is no need for mushy moderation, because disagreement is the secret to excellence. Civility and tolerance shouldn’t be our goals, because they are hopelessly low standards. And our feelings toward our foes are irrelevant; what matters is how we choose to act. Love Your Enemies offers a clear strategy for victory for a new generation of leaders. It is a rallying cry for people hoping for a new era of American progress. Most of all, it is a roadmap to arrive at the happiness that comes when we choose to love one another, despite our differences.

What I saw in that dream compelled me to try and find out if this name had any special meaning. That same day a language professor at the University of Maryland told me the only word he knew of that sounded like the one I heard in the dream was a Greek word. He said the word had three possible definitions; which changed when the accent over the -e- changed. Those definitions are very significant and I write about them in the chapter on Dreams and Visions. The definitions and an interpretation of the dream by a Rabbi three days after the dream led me to eventually believe that this unusual name could be the fulfillment of Revelations 2:17 and/or 3:12. In subsequent dreams I was writing a book titled -God's Plan to Save America-, and in one of those dreams a man was passing out white stones that had the name written on it that I heard in the dream. It is important to note that I learned of these Biblical Scriptures after I had these unusual dreams. Revelations 2:17. -Let the one who has an ear hear what the spirit says to the congregations: To him that conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white pebble, and UPON THE PEBBLE A NEW NAME written which no one knows except the one receiving it.-

Book excerpt: The majority of Americans are tired of the radical ideologues intent on surrendering our national sovereignty, and are refusing to accept nationalizing our financial, auto, energy and healthcare industries. And these same Americans are concerned about the massive debt that will be left for their children and grandchildren. Today, the political debate and dialogue is dominated by a radical agenda to change America from what it has been to something very different, something we will not recognize, and something future generations will hardly find appealing. To turn this tide, a majority of Americans must unite and educate others to thwart this agenda. In Save America Now!, Michael Master is asking us to join forces in a common cause to save the America of our Founders. He implores patriotic Americans to be steadfast in proclaiming their resolve to preserve America and to stand together for the principles that have made the United States the greatest, most prosperous and most generous nation in history. Save America Now! offers hope that, by working together against very challenging opponents, the destructive changes that are sweeping across our land can be reversed.

Despite widespread agreement that the dysfunction in the political system can be attributed to political polarization, commentators cannot come to a consensus on what that means. The coarseness of our political discourse, the ideological distance between opposing partisans, and, most of all, an inability to pass much-needed and widely supported policies all stem from the polarization in our politics. This volume assembles several top analysts of American politics to focus on solutions to polarization. The proposals range from constitutional change to good-government reforms to measures to strengthen political parties. Each tackles one or more aspects of America's polarization problem. This book begins a serious dialogue about reform proposals to address the obstacles that polarization poses for contemporary governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading political innovation activist Katherine Gehl and world-renowned business strategist Michael Porter bring fresh perspective, deep scholarship, and a real and actionable solution, Final Five Voting, to the grand challenge of our broken political and democratic system. Final Five Voting has already been adopted in Alaska and is being advanced in states across the country. The truth is, the American political system is working exactly how it is designed to work, and it isn't designed or optimized today to work for us—for ordinary citizens. Most people believe that our political system is a public institution with high-minded principles and impartial rules derived from the Constitution. In reality, it has become a private industry dominated by a textbook duopoly—the Democrats and the Republicans—and plagued and perverted by unhealthy competition between the players. Tragically, it has therefore become incapable of delivering solutions to America's key economic and social challenges. In fact, there's virtually no connection between our political leaders solving problems and getting reelected. In The Politics Industry, business leader and path-breaking political innovator Katherine Gehl and world-renowned business strategist Michael Porter take a radical new approach. They ingeniously apply the tools of business analysis—and Porter's distinctive Five Forces framework—to show how the political system functions just as every other competitive industry does, and how the duopoly has led to the devastating outcomes we see today. Using this competition lens, Gehl and Porter identify the most powerful lever for change—a strategy comprised of a clear set of choices in two key areas: how our elections work and how we make our laws. Their bracing assessment and practical recommendations cut through the endless debate about various proposed fixes, such as term limits and campaign finance reform. The result: true political innovation. The Politics Industry is an original and completely nonpartisan guide that will open your eyes to the true dynamics and profound challenges of the American political system and provide real solutions for reshaping the system for the benefit of all. THE INSTITUTE FOR POLITICAL INNOVATION The authors will donate all royalties from the sale of this book to the Institute for Political Innovation.
