Book excerpt: This volume contains written versions of the papers presented at the Second Inter national Conference on Amorphous and Crystalline Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ICACSC 1988), which was held at Santa Clara University on Decem ber 15 and 16, 1988. The conference followed the First ICACSC held at Howard University, Washington DC, in December 1987 and continued to provide an in ternational forum for discussion and exchange of ideas and results covering the current status of research on SiC and related materials. ICACSC 1988 attracted 105 participants from five countries. The substantial increase in the number of papers compared with the previous year is an indication of the growing interest in this field. Of the 45 papers presented at the conference, 36 refereed manuscripts are included in this volume, while the remaining 9 appear as abstracts. The six invited papers provide detailed reviews of recent results on amorphous and crystalline silicon carbide materials and devices, as well as diamond thin films. The volume is divided into six parts, each covering an important theme of the conference.

Book excerpt: Although silicon carbide has been used for more than half a century, its potential as a high-temperature, corrosion-resistant semiconductor has only recently begun to be exploited. Both crystalline and amorphous forms of SiC offer several advantages over Si, GaAs, and InP for high-frequency, high-power, and high-speed circuits. This volume contains reports on high-temperature SiC MOSFETs and MESFETs, secondary harmonic generation in SiC, a-SiC emitter heterojunction bipolar transistors, and bulk crystal growth of 6H-SiC. For newcomers to the field it provides an up-to-date review of technological developments in SiC and related materials, while specialists will find here recent references and new insights into materials for high-temperature, high-power, and high-speed circuit applications.

Book excerpt: More than a decade ago, because of the phenomenal growth in the power of computer simulations, The University of Georgia formed the first institutional unit devoted to the use of simulations in research and teaching: The Center for Simulational Physics. As the simulations community expanded further, we sensed a need for a meeting place for both experienced simulators and neophytes to discuss new techniques and recent results in an environment which promoted extended discussion. As a consequence, the Center for Simulational Physics established an annual workshop on Recent Developments in Computer Simulation Studies in Condensed Matter Physics. This year's workshop was the eleventh in this series, and the interest shown by the scientific community demonstrates quite clearly the useful purpose which the series has served. The latest workshop was held at The University of Georgia, February 23-27, 1998, and these proceedings provide a "status report" on a number of important topics. This volume is published with the goal of timely dissemination of the material to a wider audience. We wish to offer a special thanks to IBM Corporation for their generous support of this year's workshop. This volume contains both invited papers and contributed presentations on problems in both classical and quantum condensed matter physics. We hope that each reader will benefit from specialized results as well as profit from exposure to new algorithms, methods of analysis, and conceptual developments. Athens, GA, U. S. A. D. P. Book excerpt: Interacting many-body systems are the main subjects of research in theoretical condensed matter physics, and they are the source of both the interest and the difficulty in this field. In order to understand the macroscopic properties of matter in terms of macroscopic knowledge, many analytic and approximate methods have been introduced. The contributions to this proceedings volume focus on the most recent developments of computational approaches in condensed matter physics. Monte Carlo methods and molecular dynamics simulations applied to strongly correlated classical and quantum systems such as electron systems, quantum spin systems, spin glassss, coupled map systems, polymers and other random and comlex systems are reviewed. Comprising easy to follow introductions to each field covered and also more specialized contributions, this proceedings volume explains why computational approaches are necessary and how different fields are related to each other.

Book excerpt: The work contained in this volume is representative of the presentations made by the participants at the Fifth International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibra tional Spectroscopy, which was held at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, from June 3 to 7, 1991. The conference was the fifth in a biennial series initiated in 1982 by Prof. George H. Atkinson (University of Arizona) at Lake Placid, USA, and subsequently convened by Prof. Alfred Laubereau (University of Bayreuth, Germany) and Dr. Manfred Stockburger (Max-Planck Institut, G6ttingen, Ger many) at Bayreuth-BischofsgrUn, Germany, in 1985, by Prof. Joop D.W. Van Voorst (University of Amsterdam) at Amersfoort, The Netherlands, in 1987, and by Prof. Thomas G. Spiro (princeton University) at Princeton, USA, in 1989. The purpose of the conference is to bring together researchers from various disciplines and provide a forum for discussion of the latest advances in time resolved spectroscopies concerned with transient vibrational phenomena and their application to fundamental scientific and engineering studies. The 167 registered participants, including 46 students, from 14 different countries, represented a wide range of scientific disciplines, and clearly indicated that the field continues to expand into new areas of physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. Their enthusiasm and the originality and quality of the contributions presented produced a very successful and enjoyable conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress made during the last few years in nonlinear optics and quantum electronics has significantly increased our understanding of the interactionbetween light and matter. Of great importance are third-order nonlinear Raman techniques such as CARS, RIKES, SRS, and DFWM. This book reflects the state of the art in coherent Raman spectroscopy. The contributions together provide an overview of the various Raman techniques that make available information about the fine structure of molecular energy levels, the collisional dynamics of atoms and molecules, and processes of internal energy disipation. Some of the contributions also report on the application of local, nonperturbing diagnosic methods forthe determination of parameters such as composition, temperature, density, velocity, and energy distribution between the internal degrees of freedom.

Book excerpt: Membranes composed of amphiphilic molecules are highly flexible surfaces that determine the architecture of biological systems and provide a basic structural element for complex fluids such as microemulsions. Recently, a variety of new experimental methods such as X-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and atomic force microscopy have been used in order to study themolecular structure of these membranes. Their conformational behavior, on the other hand, is studied by optical and electron microscopy, which reveals that membranes in aqueous solution exhibit an amazing variety of different shapes. Several theoretical concepts are described suchas bending elasticity, curvature, and minimal surfaces in order to understand this polymorphism. These concepts are also useful to describe the behavior of membranes in complex fluids where they can build up hexagonal, lamellar, triply-periodic, cubic, and sponge phases. The contributions to this volume provide an up-to-date overview and describe thestate-of-the-art of this rapidly evolving field of research.

Book excerpt: Recently, the collaboration between theory and experiments in high-energy physics has become again more fruitful, important and practically indispensable. The contributions to this volume clearly summarize, in terms of the standard model of elementary particles, the present understanding of high-energy physics and present an outlook how to go beyond this standard model. Phenomenological aspects are stressed outlining possible extensions of the standard model with main topics covering higher order corrected electroweak interactions, CP violation, quark flavour mixing, lattice QCD, and dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Many new experiments are described to explore high-energy physics either by the highest available accelerators or by very high precision experiments forrare processes. Including a variety of theoretical models proposed beyond the standard model, it presents a global knowledge and a balanced view of high-energy physics reaching beyond this decade.
