Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital (microprocessor-based) protection relays (DPR) are dominating the global market today, essentially pushing all other types of relays out of the picture. These devices play a vital role in power operations for fields ranging from manufacturing, transportation, and communication to banking and healthcare. Digital Protective Relays: Problems and Solutions offers a unique focus on the problems and disadvantages associated with their use, a crucial aspect that goes largely unexamined. While there is already a massive amount of literature documenting the benefits of using digital relays, devices as sophisticated as DPR obviously have faults and drawbacks that need to be understood. This book covers these, delving into the less familiar inner workings of DPR to fill a critical literary void and help decision makers and specialists in the field of protection relays find their way out of the informational vacuum. The book provides vital information to assist them in evaluating relay producers' claims and then choose the right product. Tearing away the informational "curtain" that exists today, this book: Describes construction of functional modules of existing relays Analyzes drawbacks and problems of digital relays Details specific technical problems and their solutions Assesses dangers of intentional destructive electromagnetic intrusions Discusses alternative (non-microprocessor-based) protection relays, and problems related to international standards Focusing on practical solutions, this book explains how to correctly choose digital relays and ensure their proper use while avoiding the many problems they can present. The author avoids mathematics and theory in favor of more practical, tangible information not easily found elsewhere. Setting itself apart from other books on the subject, this volume shines a light into the long hidden "black box" of information

Book excerpt: This reference book provides a detailed discussion on the protection challenges that arise due to technological improvements in transmission and distribution systems to supply increasing power demand. The primary focus of this book is transmission line protection with FACTS devices connected to the line and islanding detection in an active distribution system i.e., microgrids. First, a literature review on the protection of transmission lines in the presence of switching devices is presented. The following chapters then present commonly proposed modifications required in the power system to meet increasing power demands, commonly used existing protection schemes and their limitations in the presence of switching devices, and solutions to these limitations in protection schemes. Results from fault simulations using PSCAD/EMTDC and MATLAB are also included. This book will be valuable to graduate students and practicing engineers alike for dealing with protection issues in transmission and distribution systems incorporating FACTS devices. Provides thorough knowledge of trends in transmission networks for the enhancement of power flow, control and protection Presents an analysis of requirements of microgrids in the future Highlights challenges in the protection of active distribution systems or microgrids against islanding in the presence of distributed generation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers new technologies and methods related to models for short-term forecasting of electricity imbalances in the IPS of Ukraine, taking into account the impact of forecasts of energy production from renewable sources on the accuracy of the imbalance forecast. The book proposed architecture and mathematical model of an artificial neural network for deep learning forecasting of short-term electricity imbalances using hourly data. Using a model to aggregate data with an hourly resolution followed by forecasting to reduce forecast error, the quasi-dynamic modeling method was used to analyze the impact of periodic generation on the network. The application of quasi-dynamic modeling also allows taking into account the system load curve, generation profile, storage system, as well as renewable energy sources (RES) operation in this area. The use of models makes it possible to achieve realistic estimates of generation for the required period. The book considers a local hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) based on different types of RES, which is more efficient than a system with one type of source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops novel digital distance relaying schemes to eliminate the errors produced by the conventional digital distance relays while protecting power transmission lines against different types of faults. These include high resistance ground faults on single infeed transmission lines; high resistance ground faults on double infeed transmission lines; simultaneous open conductor and ground fault on double infeed transmission lines; inter-circuit faults on parallel transmission lines; simultaneous open conductor and ground fault on series compensated parallel transmission lines; inter-circuit faults on series compensated parallel transmission lines; and phase faults on series compensated double infeed transmission lines. This monograph also details suggestions for further work in the area of digital protection of transmission lines. The contents will be useful to academic as well as professional researchers working in transmission line protection.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview and in-depth discussion of smart grid resilience. It covers the three most critical resilience problems facing smart grids—resilience against extreme weather, resilience against cyber-physical attacks, and resilience under system inter-dependency. Each of these topics increases the risk of large-scale system-wide cascading failures. In-depth chapters allow the reader to define and quantify the smart grid’s ability to deal with extreme events and the critical infrastructures systems that connect it. Methods for improving system design are introduced along with effective strategies for protecting the system with minimal disruption of power supply and economic and social losses in extreme conditions. Smart Grid Resilience: Extreme Weather, Cyber-Physical Security, and System Interdependency is an essential guide for a broad audience of practicing professionals, including policymakers, electric utility engineers, and transmission and distribution system operators. It will also be a valuable reference for students and researchers.
