Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, 401(k) plans have grown to be the most common type of employer-sponsored retirement plan in the United States, and now serve as the most popular defined contribution (DC) plan, as measured by number of participants and assets. In 2005, 47 million American workers were active 401(k) plan participants. By year-end 2005, 401(k) plan assets had grown to represent 17 percent of all retirement assets, with $2.4 trillion in assets. In an ongoing collaborative effort, the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the Investment Company Institute (ICI) collect annual data on millions of 401(k) plan participants as a means to accurately portray how these participants manage their accounts. This paper serves as an update of EBRI and ICI's ongoing research into 401(k) plan participants' activity through year-end 2005. The report includes two sections: The first focuses on account balance information for participants who consistently maintained accounts between 1999 and 2005. The second provides a snapshot of all 401(k) participants at year-end 2005, and reviews their account balances, asset allocations, and loan activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the Investment Company Institute (ICI) have been collaborating for the past four years to collect data on participants in 401(k) plans. This effort, known as the EBRI/ICI Participant-Directed Retirement Plan Data Collection Project, has obtained data for 401(k) plan participants from certain of EBRI and ICI members serving as plan record keepers and administrators. The EBRI/ICI database is large and representative of the 401(k) plan participant universe, as it pulls data from a variety of plan record keepers and administrators and covers a wide range of plan sizes. This report includes 1999 information on 10.3 million active participants in 32,674 plans with $573.4 billion in assets. The 1999 EBRI/ICI database accounts for 11 percent of all 401(k) plans, 26 percent of all 401(k) participants, and about 35 percent of the assets held in 401(k) plans. Key findings include: (1) For all 401(k) participants in the 1999 EBRI/ICI database, three-quarters of plan balances are invested directly or indirectly in equity securities. (2) The average account balance (net of plan loans) for all participants was $55,502 at year-end 1999, which is 18 percent higher than the average account balance at year-end 1998. (3) Investment options offered by plan sponsors influence participants' asset allocation. (4) The asset allocation of participants' account balances varies with age. Younger participants tend to concentrate their assets in equity fund investments, while older participants invest more in fixed-income securities.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, 401(k) plans have grown to be the most widespread private-sector employer-sponsored retirement plan in the United States, and now serve as the most popular defined contribution (DC) plan, representing the largest number of participants and assets. In 2007, 48.5 million American workers were active 401(k) plan participants. By year-end 2007, 401(k) plan assets had grown to represent 17 percent of all retirement assets, with $3.0 trillion in assets. In an ongoing collaborative effort, the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the Investment Company Institute (ICI) collect annual data on millions of 401(k) plan participants as a means to accurately portray how these participants manage their accounts. This paper serves as an update of EBRI and ICI's ongoing research into 401(k) plan participants' activity through year-end 2007. The report is divided into four sections: The first describes the EBRI/ICI 401(k) database; the second presents a snapshot of participant account balances at year-end 2007; the third looks at participants' asset allocations, including a new analysis of 401(k) participants' use of lifecycle funds; the fourth focuses on participants' 401(k) loan activity. As with previous EBRI/ICI updates, analysis of a consistent sample of 401(k) participants (those that have been in the same plan since 1999) is planned; this additional analysis is expected to be published early in 2009. It should be noted that the year-end 2007 401(k) data reported in this analysis, by definition, do not reflect market losses or participant account activity in 2008. The impact of the 2008 financial market performance on average 401(k) balances is strongly affected by age and tenure of the individual participant, and it would be inaccurate to make a single estimate of an average 401(k) account outcome for 2008.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an update on 401(k) plan participants' asset allocations, account balances, and loan activity as of year-end 2003, as measured by the collaborative EBRI/ICI Participant-Directed Retirement Plan database - the world's largest repository of information about individual 401(k) plan participant accounts. This update tracks the account balances of a large and representative sample of 401(k) plan participants through the severe bear market that caused broad stock market indexes to decline about 40 percent between year-end 1999 and early 2003 and the rebound that increased broad equity index values by 34 percent over the last 10 months of 2003. By year-end 2003, 401(k) plan assets had grown to $1.9 trillion and an estimated 42 million workers in the United States participated in these plans. The portion of 401(k) balances invested in equities increased in 2003, reflecting the strength of equity prices. Beyond the market-driven changes, 401(k) plan participants do not appear to have made significant asset reallocations or to have made changes in their loan activity. Participants' allocations to company stock remained in line with previous years. On average, at year-end 2003, 45 percent of 401(k) plan participants' assets were invested in equity funds, 16 percent in company stock, 9 percent in balanced funds, 10 percent in bond funds, 13 percent in guaranteed investment contracts (GICs) and other stable value funds, and 5 percent in money funds.

Book excerpt: Defined contribution (DC) plans are one of the primary means by which Americans save for retirement, and 401(k) plans are the most common type of DC plan. In an ongoing collaborative effort, the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the Investment Company Institute (ICI) collect annual data on millions of 401(k) plan participants to present an accurate portrayal of the behavior of 401(k) plan participants. This paper updates ICI and EBRI's research of 401(k) plan participant activity through year-end 2004 and includes two sections. The first section focuses on account balance information for participants who have consistently maintained accounts between 1999 and 2004. The second section provides a snapshot of all 401(k) participants at year-end 2004, reviewing their account balances, asset allocations, and loan activity.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes changes in 401(k) account balances of consistent participants in the EBRI/ICI 401(k) database over the six-year period from year-end 2007 to year-end 2013. Two major insights emerge from looking at consistent participants in the EBRI/ICI 401(k) database over this six-year time period: The average 401(k) account balance fell 25.8 percent in 2008, and then rose from 2009 through year-end 2013. Overall, the average account balance increased at a compound annual average growth rate of 10.9 percent from 2007 to 2013, to $148,399 at year-end 2013. The median (midpoint) 401(k) account balance increased at a compound annual average growth rate of 15.8 percent over the period, to $75,359 at year-end 2013. At year-end 2013, the average account balance among consistent participants was more than twice the average account balance among all participants in the EBRI/ICI 401(k) database. The consistent group's median balance was more than four times the median balance across all participants at year-end 2013. Three primary factors affect account balances: contributions, investment returns, and withdrawal/loan activity. The percentage change in average account balance of participants in their 20s was heavily influenced by the relative size of their contributions to their account balances and increased at a compound average growth rate of 46.6 percent per year between year-end 2007 and year-end 2013. The asset allocation of the 4.2 million 401(k) plan participants in the consistent group was broadly similar to the asset allocation of the 26.4 million participants in the entire year-end 2013 EBRI/ICI 401(k) database. On average at year-end 2013, about two-thirds of 401(k) participants' assets were invested in equities, either through equity funds, the equity portion of target-date funds, the equity portion of non-target-date balanced funds, or company stock. Younger 401(k) participants tend to have higher concentrations in equities than older 401(k) participants. Equity holdings by consistent 401(k) participants increased slightly among younger participants and decreased slightly for older participants. High allocations to equities dropped for both groups from 2007 to 2013. More consistent 401(k) plan participants held target-date funds at year-end 2013 than at year-end 2007, on net; many of those with target-date funds held all of their 401(k) account in target-date funds.
