Book Synopsis Vibrations of Thick Cylindrical Structures by : Hamid R. Hamidzadeh
Download or read book Vibrations of Thick Cylindrical Structures written by Hamid R. Hamidzadeh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to strong potential applications and more demanding requirements imposed upon long and thick cylindrical structures, there has been increasing research and development activities during recent years in the field of vibration and passive vibration control of these types of structures. An important step in the study of cylindrical structures is the determination of their vibration modal characteristics. This modal information plays a key role in the design and vibration suppression of these structures when subjected to dynamic excitations. Most reported studies on the dynamic response of cylindrical structures have been restricted to the application of the shell theories. These theories are based on a number of simplifying assumptions. The most important of which is, the considered shell must be relatively thin to assume constant stresses within the cylinder. Therefore, due to this limitation, shell theories are inadequate to accurately describe all possible vibration modes in thick cylindrical structures. The primary scope of this book is to address these problems by applying the theory of elasto-dynamics.

Book Synopsis Ground Vibration Engineering by : Milutin Srbulov
Download or read book Ground Vibration Engineering written by Milutin Srbulov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground vibration consideration is gaining significance with people’s decreasing tolerance of vibration, introduction of new environmental legislations, increasing use of equipment sensitive to vibration, ageing of existing buildings and expanding construction sites to/near collapsible/liquefiable/thixotropic soil. This volume bridges the gap that exists between rather limited provisions of engineering codes/standards and complex numerical analyses/small-scale tests. The book contains descriptions of ground vibration measurements, predictions and control for engineers. Effects of most frequent sources of ground vibration arising from construction/demolition, traffic and machinery, ground wave amplification and attenuation as well as foundation kinematic and inertial interaction have been considered by simplified analyses aimed at ease and speed of use for major problems in ground vibration engineering. Comments on assumptions, limitations, and factors affecting the results are given. Case studies and examples worldwide are included to illustrate the accuracy and usefulness of simplified methods. A list of references is provided for further consideration, if desired. Audience: This work is of interest to geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, earthquake engineers and students. Extra material: Microsoft Excel spreadsheets with the input data and results for the case studies and examples considered in this book are available at http://extras.springer.com
Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Integrated Modeling of Fully Coupled Fluid Structure Interactions Using Analysis, Computations and Experiments by : Haym Benaroya
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Integrated Modeling of Fully Coupled Fluid Structure Interactions Using Analysis, Computations and Experiments written by Haym Benaroya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plenary paper and the accompanying presentation have highlighted field problems involving fluid-structure interaction over a wide span of Navy operations. Considering the vast size and versatility of the Navy's inventory, the cases presented represent examples of a much larger problem. But even this limited set provides sufficient evidence that fluid-structure interaction does hinder the Navy's ability to accomplish its missions. This survey has also established that there are no accurate and generally applicable design tools for addressing these problems. In the majority of cases the state-of-practice is to either make ad-hoc adjustments and estimates based on historical evidence, or conduct expensive focused tests directed at each specific problem and/or candidate solution. Unfortunately, these approaches do not provide insight into the fundamental problem, and neither can be considered reliable regarding their likelihood of success. So the opportunities for applying computational fluid-structure interaction modeling to Navy problems appear limitless. Scenarios range from the "simple" resonant strumming of underwater and in-air cables, to the "self-contained" flow field and vibration of aircraft/ordnance bodies at various Mach numbers, to violent underwater transient detonations and local hull structural collapse. Generally applicable and computationally tractable design-oriented models for these phenomena are of course still far in the future. But the Navy has taken the first steps in that direction by sponsoring specialized numerical models, validation experiments tailored for specific applications, and conferences such as this one.

Book Synopsis Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis, Fatigue Damage by : Christian Lalanne
Download or read book Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis, Fatigue Damage written by Christian Lalanne and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue damage in a system with one degree of freedom is one of the two criteria applied when comparing the severity of vibratory environments. The same criterion is also used for a specification representing the effects produced by the set of vibrations imposed in a real environment. In this volume, which is devoted to the calculation of fatigue damage, Christian Lalanne explores the hypotheses adopted to describe the behavior of material affected by fatigue and the laws of fatigue accumulation. The author also considers the methods for counting response peaks, which are used to establish the histogram when it is not possible to use the probability density of the peaks obtained with a Gaussian signal. The expressions for mean damage and its standard deviation are established and other hypotheses are tested.

Book excerpt: Compiling the expertise of nine pioneers of the field, Magnetic Bearings - Theory, Design, and Application to Rotating Machinery offers an encyclopedic study of this rapidly emerging field with a balanced blend of commercial and academic perspectives. Every element of the technology is examined in detail, beginning at the component level and proceeding through a thorough exposition of the design and performance of these systems. The book is organized in a logical fashion, starting with an overview of the technology and a survey of the range of applications. A background chapter then explains the central concepts of active magnetic bearings while avoiding a morass of technical details. From here, the reader continues to a meticulous, state-of-the-art exposition of the component technologies and the manner in which they are assembled to form the AMB/rotor system. These system models and performance objectives are then tied together through extensive discussions of control methods for both rigid and flexible rotors, including consideration of the problem of system dynamics identification. Supporting this, the issues of system reliability and fault management are discussed from several useful and complementary perspectives. At the end of the book, numerous special concepts and systems, including micro-scale bearings, self-bearing motors, and self-sensing bearings, are put forth as promising directions for new research and development. Newcomers to the field will find the material highly accessible while veteran practitioners will be impressed by the level of technical detail that emerges from a combination of sophisticated analysis and insights gleaned from many collective years of practical experience. Book Synopsis Civil Infrastructure Systems: Intelligent Renewal: Proceedings Of The Third International Symposium by : Franco Maceri
Download or read book Civil Infrastructure Systems: Intelligent Renewal: Proceedings Of The Third International Symposium written by Franco Maceri and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-01-29 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A civil infrastructure system (CIS) is better defined by its interactive effects and integration than by its individual components. It transports people and goods, delivers clean water, electric power, gas and liquid fuel, preserves the environment from pollution, facilitates communication and mitigates the impact of natural disasters.Infrastructure systems are networks and/or lifelines of which highways, airports, canals, dams, bridges, embankments, mass transit and telecommunication systems, etc. are important components. The increasing demand for CIS availability — while new constructions may be prevented from environmental considerations and, in Europe, from architectural motivations — requires the improvement of the existing CIS. In addition, recent natural disasters have demonstrated the fragility of these systems and the devastating degree of socio-economic loss that their failure can bring. These trends are common in most industrial countries. All these countries are in urgent need of cost-effective strategies for planning, design, construction, maintenance and retrofit of their respective CISs in order to enhance and sustain the current economic prosperity into the 21st century.
