Book Synopsis In Search of the True Gypsy by : Wim Willems
Download or read book In Search of the True Gypsy written by Wim Willems and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has only been recognised tardily and with reluctance that during the Second World War hundreds of thousands of itinerants met the same horrendous fate as Jews and other victims of Nazism. Gypsies appear to appeal to the imagination simply as social outcasts and scapegoats or, in a flattering but no more illuminating light, as romantic outsiders. In this study, contemporary notions about Gypsies are traced back as far as possible to their roots, in an attempt to lay bare why stigmatisation of gypsies, or rather groups labelled as such, has continuned from the distant past even to today.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Writing by : Romy Clark
Download or read book The Politics of Writing written by Romy Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing matters: it plays a key role in the circulation of ideas in society and has a direct impact on the development of democracy. But only a few get to do the kind of writing that most influence this development. The Politics of Writing examines writing as a social practice. The authors draw on critical linguistics, cultural studies and literacy studies, as they explore and analyse: * the social context in which writing is embedded * the processes and practices of writing * the purposes of writing * the reader-writer relationship * issues of writer identity. They challenge current notions of 'correctness' and argue for a more democratic pedagogy as part of the answer to the inequitable distribution of the right to write.

Book Synopsis Gramsci's Politics by : Anne Showstack Sassoon
Download or read book Gramsci's Politics written by Anne Showstack Sassoon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980. This book analyses Gramsci’s political theory and the consequences of his ideas for the theory of the state and of the political party. Using the new tools of analysis which have been developed in Italy the book presents Gramsci’s political theory as part of the attempt to develop further a Marxist theory of politics. The book also serves as a basis for considering the theoretical foundations of political developments such as Eurocommunism and the author argues that Gramsci’s political thought provides useful instruments for both a critique of Stalinism and of social democracy and offers a grounding for conceptualising democratic forms of socialism which did not simply reinforce the State. This title will be of interest to students of politics, philosophy, and history.

Download or read book Romani Writing written by Paola Toninato and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roma (commonly known as "Gypsies") have largely been depicted in writings and in popular culture as an illiterate group. However, as Romani Writing shows, the Roma have a deep understanding of literacy and its implications, and use writing for a range of different purposes. While some Romani writers adopt an "oral" use of the written medium, which aims at opposing and deconstructing anti-Gypsy stereotypes, other Romani authors use writing for purposes of identity-building. Writing is for Romani activists and intellectuals a key factor in establishing a shared identity and introducing a common language that transcends linguistic and geographical boundaries between different Romani groups. Romani authors, acting in-between different cultures and communication systems, regard writing as an act of cultural mediation through which they are able to rewrite Gypsy images and negotiate their identity while retaining their ethnic specificity. Indeed, Romani Writing demonstrates how Romani authors have started to create self-images in which the Roma are no longer portrayed as "objects", but become "subjects" of written representation.
