Book excerpt: Finalist- Army Historical Foundation's Distinguished Writing Award The American Doughboys of World War I are often referred to as the "Lost Generation"; however, in this book we are able to gain an intimate look at their experiences after being thrust into the center of Europe's "Great War" and enduring some of the most grueling battles in U.S. history. Len Fairfield (the author's grandfather) was an Artillery Scout, or Forward Observer, for the U.S. Army, and was a firsthand witness to the war's carnage as he endured its countless hardships, all of which are revealed here in vivid detail. His story takes the reader from a hard life in Chicago, through conscription, rigorous training in America and France, and finally to the battles which have become synonymous with the U.S. effort in France--St. Mihiel and the Argonne Forest, the latter claiming 26,000 American lives, more than any other U.S. battle. Fairfield, with his artillery in support of the 91st ("Wild West") Division, was on the front lines for it all, amidst a sea of carnage caused by bullets, explosives and gas, with the occasional enemy plane swooping in to add strafing to the chaos. Entire units were decimated before gaining a yard, and then the Doughboys would find German trenches filled with dead to indicate the enemy was suffering equally. The AEF endured a rare close-quarters visit to hell until it was sensed that the Germans were finally giving way, though fighting tooth-and-nail up to the very minute of the Armistice. This action-filled work brings the reader straight to the center of America's costly battles in World War I, reminding us once again how great-power status often has to be earned with blood on battlefields.

Book excerpt: On 14th January, 1915, a letter from the War Office to the Mayor of Camberwell authorised the recruiting of a brigade of field artillery (156th Brigade R.F.A). The local response was so prompt that further authority was given to raise another brigade in the same neighbourhood, to be designated 162nd Brigade R.F.A. and this was done by mid May. It was then brought to the attention of the WO that a mass of would-be recruits still remained in the Camberwell Borough, enough to complete the whole of the artillery for the 33rd Division, a Kitchener division of the Fourth New Army. The two additional field artillery brigades needed were numbered 166th and 167th (Howitzer), and the divisional ammunition column (33rd D.A.C)was also formed. This book took nearly two years to complete and throughout that time the author maintained the closest collaboration with the official war diaries, personal diaries, letters and experiences of individuals and every sort of reliable information to produce an accurate and complete record of the doings of the batteries in France. An appendix contains a list of the casualties suffered by the divisional artillery (officers by name, other ranks numerically) during the war, another shows all the other divisions supported by 33rd Divisional Artillery, when and where; a third appendix shows the various sectors of the line where the batteries were in action, with dates and official names of the battles in which they were engaged. In the text are twelve tables showing the names of the HQ Staff, brigade commanders, adjutants and battery commanders at various stages of the war

Book Synopsis The 104th Field Artillery Regiment of the New York National Guard, 1916-1919 by : Pamela A. Bakker
Download or read book The 104th Field Artillery Regiment of the New York National Guard, 1916-1919 written by Pamela A. Bakker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book chronicles the extensive training and heroic service of the New York National Guard's 104th Field Artillery Regiment from the period of 1916 to 1919. The regiment, initially called the 1st Field Artillery Regiment, served as border patrol in Texas during the Mexican Punitive Expedition in 1916, and trained at the gunnery field at La Gloria, Texas. During World War I, they trained by the Glassy Mountains at Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina, and then at the School of Fire of Camp de Souge near Bordeaux, France. Because of this extensive training, elements of the 27th Division were splintered off and placed within a number of other divisions. The 52nd Field Artillery Brigade, under which the 104th Field Artillery Regiment served, was attached to the 33rd Division as their artillery, and then the 79th Division for the entire Meuse-Argonne Offensive near Verdun. Using field diaries, photos and letters, their story of courage under extreme conditions including enemy shelling and gas is recorded and their memory preserved.

Book Synopsis The Church Lads' Brigade in the Great War by : Jean Morris
Download or read book The Church Lads' Brigade in the Great War written by Jean Morris and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that around 50,000 Brigade Lads served in the First World War, during which many honors and distinctions were awarded. The Brigade contributed two Service Battalions of the King's Royal Rifle Corps whose members were comprised entirely of past and present members of the Church Lads' Brigade. These were known as ‘Pals’ Battalions. The story of the battalion centers around the experiences of eight men who served and some who died in the Battles of The Somme, Arras and The Lys. In the latter half of the nineteenth century influential Christians were worried about the poor spiritual and physical development of young people. It was at that time that ‘Brigade’ groups began to spring up all over the UK. Walter Mallock Gee, who was Secretary of the Junior Branch of the Church of England Temperance Society and a ‘Volunteer’ Army Officer, founded the Church Lads’ Brigade in 1891. By 1908 the membership of the brigade stood at about 70,000 in 1,300 companies. When the ‘Call to Arms’ came from Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener in 1914, thousands of Britain’s youth flocked to join the armed forces. Members of the Church Lads’ Brigade joined up in their droves at recruiting stations all over Great Britain. Two Battalions were formed entirely from serving and ex-members of the Church Lad’s Brigade. The 16th (Service) Battalion and later the 19th (Service) Battalion, both sponsored by the Church Lads’ Brigade, became known as ‘The Churchmen’s Battalion’. In 1914 no one could have imagined the horrendous stories that would unfold from the bloody massacre at so many notorious battles across Belgium and the fields of Flanders. Ypres, Passchendale, Somme, Arras, Lys, and the brutal decimation of the battalion during the hell of the fighting at High Wood. No one could have imagined the discomfort and disease brought on by living in a trench full of water for days on end, or ‘over the top’ through acres of knee-high mud. More than 24 of the Church Lads’ Brigade were awarded a Victoria Cross for their bravery, but by 1918 many of those gallant young Lads would not return home. This is their story.
