Book Synopsis Ray Tissues as an Indirect Measure of Relative Sap-sugar Concentration in Sugar Maple by : Peter W. Garrett
Download or read book Ray Tissues as an Indirect Measure of Relative Sap-sugar Concentration in Sugar Maple written by Peter W. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Attempts to correlate ray tissue as a percentage of total wood volume with sap sugar concentrations of sugar maple progenies were unsuccessful. These results raise doubts about our ability to use a relatively constant value such as ray-tissue volume in a selection program designed to increase the sap-sugar concentration of sugar maple seedlings. Book Synopsis Responses of Northern U.S. Forests to Environmental Change by : Robert A. Mickler
Download or read book Responses of Northern U.S. Forests to Environmental Change written by Robert A. Mickler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years of research carried out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Services' Northern Global Change Program, contributing to our understanding of the effects of multiples stresses on forest ecosystems over multiple spatial and temporal scales. At the physiological level, reports explore changes in growth and biomass, species composition, and wildlife habitat; at the landscape scale, the abundance distribution, and dynamics of species, populations, and communities are addressed. Chapters include studies of nutrient depletion, climate and atmospheric deposition, carbon and nitrogen cycling, insect and disease outbreaks, biotic feedbacks with the atmosphere, interacting effects of multiple stresses, and modeling the regional effects of global change. The book provides sound ecological information for policymakers and land-use planners as well as for researchers in ecology, forestry, atmospheric science, soil science and biogeochemistry.

Book Synopsis West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database by : Lawrence E. Osborn
Download or read book West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database written by Lawrence E. Osborn and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In West Virginia, yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is abundant and is a prime candidate for increased utilization in a variety of manufacturing industries. Computer simulations are a cost-effective tool for estimating potential cutting yields from lumber. They can be used to promote increased use of yellow-poplar in the furniture, cabinet, and architectural woodworking industries and may also lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber. This paper describes the data collection methods and the format of the new West Virginia yellow-poplar lumber defect database that was developed for use with computer simulation programs. The database contains descriptions of 627 boards, totaling approximately 3,800 board feet, collected in West Virginia for grades FAS, FASIF, No. 1 Common, No. 2A Common, and No. 28 Common.S3.
Book Synopsis Survival and Growth of White Ash Families and Provenances 15 Years After Establishment in West Virginia by : Thomas M. Schuler
Download or read book Survival and Growth of White Ash Families and Provenances 15 Years After Establishment in West Virginia written by Thomas M. Schuler and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The survival, growth, and stem form of 45 white ash (Fraxinus americana L.) families nested within 22 provenances were evaluated 1 5 years after establishment in North Central West Virginia. Geographic family origins encompassed a wide area in the eastern and central United States, including locations from Maine in the North to Mississippi in the South to Nebraska in the West. Significant differences were identified among provenances for survival, stem form, total height, and stem diameter and among families within provenances for stem form and total height. Latitude was a significant indicator of provenance performance with performance declining north and south of the plantation latitude. Performance gains may be realized by using proper provenances then identifying superior families within these provenances for white ash artificial regeneration activities.
