Book excerpt: There have been Lutheran schools in Australia for more than 170 years. This book examines the second 80 years of that history through a series of biographies of the pathfinders, those educational leaders who, on the basis of a rich tradition which had suffered some reversals, forged new directions for Lutheran schooling in the twentieth century. The eight profiles in this book not only cover the broad sweep of Lutheran educational history from 1919 to 1999, but also explore the stories of people who were leading players in its development.

This book was released on 2009-07-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nature of Doctrine, originally published in 1984, is one of the most influential works of academic theology in the past fifty years. A true classic, this book sets forth the central tenets of a post-liberal approach to theology, emphasizing a cultural-linguistic approach to religion and a rule theory of doctrine. In addition to his account of the nature of religion, George Lindbeck also addresses the relationship between Christianity and other religions, the resolution of historic doctrinal conflict among Christian communities, and the nature and task of theology itself. This is a work that all theologians and advanced students should know. This twenty-fifth anniversary edition includes an English translation of the foreword to the German edition and a complete bibliography of Lindbeck's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloomington and Normal have grown from small, pioneer settlements into the "Twin Cities" of central Illinois, linked by their proximity and shared history. Surviving and rebuilding after a devastating fire in 1900, the area has continued to grow and prosper. It is home to many businesses, including State Farm, the nation's largest auto and homeowners insurance company. The vintage postcards in this collection feature the delights and difficulties of Bloomington-Normal at the turn-of-the-century. These images capture historic events such as the Street Car Strike of 1917 in which workers took their demands to the streets. The businesses that closed-up shop years ago are opened again through these historic postcards, many of which were originally produced by Bloomington-based postcard publisher C.U. Williams.

Book excerpt: A celebration of 25 years of the Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar that features contributions from a diverse lineup of today's most respected scholars. For twenty-five years, the Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar has produced a steady stream of influential, global, diverse, ecumenical and world-class research and publications that have impacted a generation of scholars now in mid-career, teaching or ministering at various universities, seminaries, divinity schools, or churches around the globe. The volumes of the seminar have resourced countless classrooms and have been cited thousands of times in scholarly research and in the pulpits and Bible studies worldwide. In celebration of the 25th year of the seminar (1997-2022), this compendium reflects on its work and impact. It offers new essays that chart the value of the seminar for biblical interpretation and the needs of biblical interpretation in the future, and includes stories from the formative SAHS community. This volume distills the work of the seminar for a new generation of students, opening to them a gateway to the community and to the resources developed over the past two decades. Tightly organized, carefully arranged and cross-referenced, this volume: Highlights the work of a significant movement in biblical interpretation in the academy Charts a path of biblical interpretation from the past to the future Helps readers understand the philosophical and theological commitments that undergird biblical interpretation Helps readers construct a theological hermeneutics that yields a deeper, richer reading of Scripture Introduces readers to stories of the seminar from scholars and ministers impacted by it This celebratory volume not only gives a unique perspective on the architecture of biblical interpretation in the first quarter of the twenty-first century, but it is offered in hope of preparing fertile soil for the next generation of women and men to cultivate biblical interpretation for years to come. Book Synopsis Lutherans in Western New York by : Julianna Fiddler-Woite
Download or read book Lutherans in Western New York written by Julianna Fiddler-Woite and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the construction of the Erie Canal in the early 1820s, the population of Western New York increased 145 percent. Many of these pioneers were European immigrants, with a high concentration hailing from the German-speaking states. These immigrants brought their Lutheran ideals and continued to practice the religion in their new homeland. By 1827, the first official Lutheran church in Erie County had been incorporated as the German Reformed Church, known today as St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eggertsville. Soon after, the need for mission churches arose, and by the mid-1800s, Lutheran congregations had been established in several Western New York suburbs. During the following century, the Lutherans in Western New York would undergo growth and change. While all congregations eventually abandoned German as their primary language, many struggled to further separate from their German roots during the Nazi regime. Today, there are nearly 200 Lutheran congregations in New York.
