Book excerpt: Images of the century (TASCHEN's 25th anniversary special edition) The history of photography began some 150 years ago, but only relatively recently has it been fully recognised as a medium in its own right. Cologne's Museum Ludwig was the first museum of contemporary art to devote a substantial section to international photography. The L. Fritz Gruber collection, from which this book is drawn, is one of the most important in Germany and one of the most representative anywhere in the world, constituting the core of the museum's holdings. This book provides a fascinating insight into the collection's rich diversity; from conceptual art to abstraction to reportage, all of the major movements and genres are represented via a vast selection of the century's most remarkable photographs. From Ansel Adams to Piet Zwart, over 850 works are presented in alphabetical order by photographer, with descriptive texts and photographers' biographical details.

Book excerpt: "Facts are marvelous replacements for suppositions." Gustave Flaubert Since the spectacular purchase of the Agfa Foto-Historama collections, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne can lay claim to the earliest daguerreotypes from Berlin, albums which once belonged to Alexander von Humboldt, photographs by Desire Charnay of Mexico and Maxime Du Camp of Egypt, Auguste Salzmann of Jerusalem, Charles Clifford of Spain, August F. Oppenheim of Greece, photographic incunabula by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, as well as prints by Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar and Franz Hanfstaengl. The inventory also includes 200 caricatures and illustrations on the behavior of people in front of and behind the camera and numerous documents and autographs from Daguerre to Talbot, from Hermann Biow to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Erich Stenger obtained from August Sander a rare original `Stammappen' on the work of "Citizens of the 20th Century". The Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner (GDL) was then honored to present him with a portfolio of more than 50 portraits of 1949/50 members. In the 1960s the following were added to the collection: the personal estate of Hermann Krone of Dresden, photographs by Baldus and Charles Negre, more than 300 portraits of artists, writers and politicians shot by Hugo Erfurth in Dresden and Cologne, photographs by Erich Salomon, Fritz Henle, etc. This unique inventory and the history of this collection is said to be the oldest collection on the cultural history of photography in German-speaking countries. Now for the first time Facts provides an overview of the entire collection. Co-published with Museum Ludwig, Cologne.

Book excerpt: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was one of the most important painters of the Expressionist movement, but he was also a skilled photographer who documented the era's main protagonists and milieu. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: The Photographic Work, compiled and edited by the Kirchner Museum Davos, is the first collection of his photographs, taken between 1908 and 1938. Brought together, they offer insight into the beginning of the modern age and all its contradictions, not least in the wild bohemian life of the artists, set alongside scenes of the intensely archaic Alpine world. Kirchner also attempted to portray the "model society" of contemporary artists through his portraits, including subjects such as Oskar Schlemmer, Hermann Scherer and Albert Mller; authors such as Theodor W. Bluth and Alfred Dàblin; and collectors and patrons of the arts such as Carl Hagemann, Fr»d»ric Bauer and Botho Graef. The chronological sequence of images covers all the genres in which Kirchner worked as a photographer: self-portraits, individual and group portraits, nudes, scenes from his atelier, exhibition documentation, landscapes, installations and documentary photographs. The texts include an essay analyzing the historical and artistic context of this work and another on camera technique. The catalogue index contains formal descriptions of the photographs and their contents and an extensive register provides researchers easy access to information. A detailed biography, illustrated in part by previously unpublished photos, links the individual photographs to specific moments in Kirchner's life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lot more to photography than simply picking up a camera, pointing it toward something, and tripping the shutter. Achieving a great photograph requires thought and preparation, an understanding of the photographic process, and a firm grasp of how light and composition affect a photo. There must be personal involvement and personal expression. There must be experimentation, with the recognition that only a small percentage of experiments end successfully. In this book, best-selling author and world-renowned photographer and teacher Bruce Barnbaum explores these seldom-discussed issues by drawing upon his personal experiences and observations from more than 40 years of photographing and teaching. In addition to photographs, Bruce also uses painting, music, and writing, as well as the sciences and even business, to provide pertinent examples of creative thinking. These examples serve as stepping-stones that will lead you to your own heightened ability to see and be creative. Creativity is a topic that is almost wholly ignored in formal education because most instructors think that it cannot be taught or learned. To the contrary, Bruce has proven that photographic seeing and creativity can be taught, learned, and improved. This book expands on the ideas that are central to Bruce's method of teaching photography, which he has used in workshops for the past 41 years. Included in the book are in-depth discussions on the following topics: Defining your own unique rhythm and approach as a photographer How to translate the scene in front of you to the final photograph The differences and similarities between how an amateur and a professional approach photography The differences between realism and abstraction, and the possibilities and limitations of each Learning to expand your own seeing and creativity through classes, workshops, and associating with other photographers Why the rules of composition should be ignored How to follow your passion When to listen to the critics and when to ignore them The book is richly illustrated with over 90 photographs taken by Bruce as well as other photographers.Seeing and creativity are difficult to teach, but not impossible. This very different, perhaps groundbreaking book is sure to inspire photographers of all skill levels-from beginners to seasoned professionals-to think deeply about the issues involved in creating successful photographs.

Book excerpt: This lucid and comprehensive collection of essays by an international group of scholars constitutes a photo-historical survey of select photographers who embraced National Socialism during the Third Reich. These photographers developed and implemented physiognomic and ethnographic photography, and, through a Selbstgleichschaltung (a self-co-ordination with the regime), continued to practice as photographers throughout the twelve years of the Third Reich. The volume explores, through photographic reproductions and accompanying analysis, diverse aspects of photography during the Third Reich, ranging from the influence of Modernism, the qualitative effect of propaganda photography, and the utilisation of technology such as colour film, to the photograph as ideological metaphor. With an emphasis on the idealised representation of the German body and the role of physiognomy within this representation, the book examines how select photographers created and developed a visual myth of the ‘master race’ and its antitheses under the auspices of the Nationalist Socialist state. Photography in the Third Reich approaches its historical source photographs as material culture, examining their production, construction and proliferation. This detailed and informative text will be a valuable resource not only to historians studying the Third Reich, but to scholars and students of film, history of art, politics, media studies, cultural studies and holocaust studies.

Book excerpt: After On the Mines, The Transported of KwaNdebele is the second of David Goldblatt's books to be redesigned and expanded by the artist for Steidl Publishers. Dating originally from 1989, it talks about the workers of an apartheid tribal homeland for blacks, KwaNdebele, which has no industry, very few opportunities for jobs and is a long way from the nearest industrial-commercial activity of white-controlled Pretoria. Workers from KwaNdebele catch buses in the very early morning, some as early as 2:45 am, in order to be at their workplaces in Pretoria by 7:00. At the end of the day they repeat the journey in the other direction, to get home at between 8 and 10 pm. Goldblatt takes us on their bone-jarring journeys through the night, which is a metaphor for their arduous struggle toward freedom itself. In photographs devoid of sentimentality and artifice, the grim determination of these people to survive and overcome emerges in almost heroic terms. Brenda Goldblatt, filmmaker and writer, interviewed some of the bus-riding workers who endured not only these journeys but a civil war precipitated by the apartheid government's attempt to foist a kind of independence on KwaNdebele--a condition which would have made the workers foreigners in the land of their birth, South Africa, and thus deprived them of their limited right to work there. Interviews with contemporary (2012) bus-riders fill out the account. Phillip van Niekerk, former editor of the Mail & Guardian, provides an essay on KwaNdebele, its place in the logic of grand apartheid and its half-life in post-apartheid South Africa.
