Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This famous set of mathematical tables was first published in 1803. It has been a bestseller ever since, and despite developments in electronic navigation it remains an essential requirement for anyone learning and practising astro-navigation. Last updated in 1994, the editor, George Blance, has worked for some time on the modernisation of all the tables for this major new edition. New tables have been included and obsolete ones deleted to conform with the changing techniques of navigation, with the aim of improving the accuracy of the calculated position and reducing the tedium of the calculation. All the tables required for coastal and deep sea navigation are included. A simple uniform method of interpolation for all the trigonometrical tables is used. Certain tables and data are also included which are not readily available on board ship or are only used in the examination room. The section 'Seaports of the World' has also been extensively updated and restructured with several hundred additional ports. The ports are listed geographically in the following order from Arctic Russia, Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea, the Atlantic coast of Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa, East Africa, Arabia, the Persian Gulf, the Indian sub-continent, the Far East, Australasia, the west coast of North and South America and finally the east coast of North and South America. At the back of the section is an index of the seaports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Sino-US relations have deteriorated, concerns have grown in Washington over its ability to defeat China in a major conflict. A conflict between such peer competitors would likely become a protracted war of attrition drawing on all dimensions of national power, but this reality has yet to receive a sufficient degree of analytical attention. In this Adelphi book, Iskander Rehman provides a historically informed and empirically grounded study of protracted great-power war, its core drivers and characteristics, and an examination of the elements that have most often determined a competitor’s long-term strategic performance. Final victory in a protracted conflict, this book argues, rests on a combination of three core factors: a state’s military effectiveness and adaptability, its socio-economic power and resiliency, and the soundness of its alliance management and grand strategy. A detailed analysis of the contemporary Sino-US rivalry assesses how both parties might fare in the event of a protracted war, while highlighting some of its key differentiating aspects – most notably its nuclear and cyber dimensions.

Book excerpt: In the last decade, the concept of a Blue Economy has ignited a deep theoretical debate. Ranging from the integration of the triple bottom line of sustainability to the optimization of profit from ocean exploitation, the meaning of the term blue economy differs considerably between epistemic communities and even more so among national and regional policies. There is a general sense of the opportunity to realise enhanced social and economic benefits from the sustainable utilisation of their ocean and coastal resources under the umbrella framework of blue economy. Blue economy is gaining traction already as a significant component of national policies, even in spite of a clear conceptualization of the term. Many countries are now preparing national policies towards realising their blue economy ambitions, utilizing the concept as they see fit. Likewise, multilateral and regional organisations are developing guidelines, and providing investment in new research, technologies, and financing tools that promote blue economy. Critical challenges abound, in particular in less privileged countries. These include the gap in research capabilities, governments prioritizing social wellbeing and economic profit in contrast to environmental protection, the identification of new and emerging areas of ocean economic activity that are both socially and ecologically sustainable and holds viable business models that can attract private investment.

Book excerpt: Coastal Navigation for Class and Home Study is based on the notes prepared for students by the author during some 20 years of teaching navigation, initially to private or commercial pilots, and then to sailors and professional mariners. The book is copiously illustrated with graphics which explain chart projections, scales and symbols, and describe lights and other navigation aids. It demystifies the True, Magnetic and Compass Norths as well as problems of time, speed and distances, and explains how to plot courses and take bearings, or draw regular and advanced Lines of Position using the international system of labeling. The book further clarifies the use of vectors to easily determine the impact of a current on the boat speed and direction, and goes on to show how to evaluate tides and currents. The final sections describe the use of GPS and electronic charts, highlighting their limitations. Additional notes and explanations are given in the areas where students traditionally experience difficulties, as well as supplementary examples and exercises. The companion book, Coastal Navigation Exercises, offers all the exercises needed for practice.

Book excerpt: The ocean is a major source of income for many coastal nations, particularly in the developing world. Economic benefits from the ocean in the long-term depend on its wise science and technology-based management. The intersection of science, technology, and economy are most obvious in nations' coastal zones. This book highlights the need for the application of ocean science and technology for best economic outcomes. It gives examples of ocean resources and the threats to them from climate change and other human interventions, as well as provides information on the available ocean research and observation tools to monitor their impact as well as on the related internationally available opportunities for capacity development.
