Book excerpt: With the advent of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in public areas such as malls and airports, their harmonious coexistence with humans is crucial. AMRs must operate in a manner that ensures human safety, comfort, and acceptability to reduce stress. This is called Human Aware Navigation. This study introduces a framework for AMR navigation that prioritizes safety and human comfort in such environments, utilizing an enhanced Potential Field approach augmented by Fuzzy Inference Systems. To achieve a smooth AMR trajectory, the framework employs these systems based on AMR, human, and obstacle information. The proposed approach is tested across various scenarios, including complex, cluttered environments that mimic practical situations. Simulation results demonstrate that AMRs using the proposed method navigate human-rich environments safely and comfortably while mitigating common issues associated with Potential Field-based approaches, such as local minima and obstacles near the goal.

Book excerpt: This book provides a concise survey and description of recent collision detection methods for robot manipulators. Beginning with a review of robot kinodynamic models and preliminaries on basic statistical learning methods, the book covers fundamental aspects of the collision detection problem, from collision types and collision detection performance criteria to model-free versus model-based methods, and the more recent data-driven learning-based approaches to collision detection. Special effort has been given to describing and evaluating existing methods with a unified set of notation, systematically categorizing these methods according to a basic set of criteria, and summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of each method. This book is the first to comprehensively organize the growing body of learning-based collision detection methods, ranging from basic supervised learning methods to more advanced approaches based on unsupervised learning and transfer learning techniques. Step-by-step implementation details and pseudocode descriptions are provided for key algorithms. Collision detection performance is measured with respect to both conventional criteria such as detection delay and the number of false alarms, as well as criteria that measure generalization capability for learning-based methods. Whether it be for research or commercial applications, in settings ranging from industrial factories to physical human–robot interaction experiments, this book can help the reader choose and successfully implement the most appropriate detection method that suits their robot system and application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are starting to enter a post-COVID-19 life. While this pandemic has made everyone’s life challenging, it also expedited the transition of our everyday lives into a new form, often called “The New Normal.” Although many people often use the terminology, perhaps we still do not have consensus about what it is and what it should be like. However, one thing that is clear namely that robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are playing a critical role in this transition phase of our everyday lives. We saw the emergence of last-mile delivery robots on the street, AI-embedded service robots in restaurants, uninhabited shops, non-face-to-face medical services, conferences and talks in metaverses, and AI-based online education programs. This book is an edition that aims at serving researchers and practitioners in related fields with a timely dissemination of the recent progress in the areas of robotics and artificial intelligence. This book is based on a collection of papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications (RiTA), held at Griffith University in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The conference was held in a hybrid format on December 7–9, 2022, with the main theme “Artificial, Agile, Acute Robot Intelligence.” For better readability, the total of 41 papers are grouped into five chapters: Chapter I: Motion Planning and Control; Chapter II: Vision and Image Processing; Chapter III: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Autonomous Vehicles; Chapter IV: Learning and Classification; and Chapter V: Environmental and Societal Robotic Applications. The articles were accepted through a rigorous peer-review process and presented at the RiTA 2022 conference. Also, they were updated, and final versions of the manuscripts were produced after in-depth discussions during the conference. We would like to thank all the authors and editors for contributing to this edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer that imbibes human characteristics is considered to have a digital personality. The character is akin to real-life human with his/her distinguishing characteristics such as history, morality, beliefs, abilities, looks, and sociocultural embeddings. It also contains stable personality characteristics; fluctuating emotional, cognitive, SOAR technology, and motivational states. Digital Personality focuses on the creation of systems and interfaces that can observe, sense, predict, adapt to, affect, comprehend, or simulate the following: character based on behavior and situation, behavior based on character and situation, or situation based on character and behavior. Character sensing and profiling, character-aware adaptive systems, and artificial characters are the three primary subfields in digital personality. Digital Personality has attracted the interest of academics from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, human-computer interaction, and character modeling. It is expected to expand quickly as technology and computer systems become more and more intertwined into our daily lives. Digital Personality is expected to draw at least as much attention as Affective Computing. The goal of affective computing is to enable computers to comprehend both spoken and nonverbal messages from people, use implicit body language, gaze, speech tones, and facial expressions, etc. to infer the emotional state and then reply appropriately or even show affect through interaction modalities. More natural and seamless human-computer connection would be the larger objective. Users will benefit from a more individualized experience as a result. Additionally, this will affect how well the user performs since they will have the assistance of the robots to do their jobs quickly and effectively. This book provides an overview of the character dimensions and how technology is aiding this area of study. It offers a fresh portrayal of character from several angles. It also discusses the applications of this new field of study.
