Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving the goal of green and environmentally friendly energy systems is not possible without the concept of energy storage. Such storage should charge when renewable generation, e.g., photovoltaics and wind farms, is abundant and discharge during periods of its scarcity. Although pumped hydropower plants have been widely used as extremely large capacity energy storage, the recent technological developments in lithium-based batteries have made them economically feasible. The major advantages of batteries over a conventional energy storage system, i.e., hydropower, include its modularity and ease of integration with the transport system. This Special Issue is thus focused on both stationary batteries and mobile batteries in electric vehicles. Both should be used to provide flexibility and balancing services to power systems. While stationary batteries are focused solely on the power system, the batteries within electric vehicles need to primarily fulfill the task of providing energy for transportation. This is why their use in power systems is secondary. However, due to generally long parking periods, they can become a detrimental asset in terms of balancing the power system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal Operation of Integrated Energy Systems Under Uncertainties: Distributionally Robust and Stochastic Models discusses new solutions to the rapidly emerging concerns surrounding energy usage and environmental deterioration. Integrated energy systems (IESs) are acknowledged to be a promising approach to increasing the efficiency of energy utilization by exploiting complementary (alternative) energy sources and storages. IESs show favorable performance for improving the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and accelerating low-carbon transition. However, as more renewables penetrate the energy system, their highly uncertain characteristics challenge the system, with significant impacts on safety and economic issues. To this end, this book provides systematic methods to address the aggravating uncertainties in IESs from two aspects: distributionally robust optimization and online operation. - Presents energy scheduling, considering power, gas, and carbon markets concurrently based on distributionally robust optimization methods - Helps readers design day-ahead scheduling schemes, considering both decision-dependent uncertainties and decision-independent uncertainties for IES - Covers online scheduling and energy auctions by stochastic optimization methods - Includes analytic results given to measure the performance gap between real performance and ideal performance

This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing penetration of renewable energy and distributed energy resources, smart grid is facing great challenges, which could be divided into two categories. On the one hand, the endogenous uncertainties of renewable energy and electricity load lead to great difficulties in smart grid forecast. On the other hand, massive electric devices as well as their complex constraint relationships bring about significant difficulties in smart grid dispatch. Owe to the rapid development of artificial intelligence in recent years, several artificial intelligence enabled computational methods have been successfully applied in the smart grid and achieved good performances. Therefore, this book is concerned with the research on the key issues of artificial intelligence enabled computational methods for smart grid forecast and dispatch, which consist of three main parts. (1) Introduction for smart grid forecast and dispatch, in inclusion of reviewing previous contribution of various research methods as well as their drawbacks to analyze characteristics of smart grid forecast and dispatch. (2) Artificial intelligence enabled computational methods for smart grid forecast problems, which are devoted to present the recent approaches of deep learning and machine learning as well as their successful applications in smart grid forecast. (3) Artificial intelligence enabled computational methods for smart grid dispatch problems, consisting of edge-cutting intelligent decision-making approaches, which help determine the optimal solution of smart grid dispatch. The book is useful for university researchers, engineers, and graduate students in electrical engineering and computer science who wish to learn the core principles, methods, algorithms, and applications of artificial intelligence enabled computational methods.
